Lexus GX470 vs TOYOTA 4RUNNER - Off-road Comparison 

4Runners are the BEST... (which is why I love GX470- they're built on 4Runner frame and power train-- with lexus body!!! 4wheeling in style as it were!! :)

No 3rd gen 4runner has Atrac, the gx470 has Atrac and a bad driver mod. The Gx is more capable off-road with good mod and a great driver but the 4runer is good with just a good driver. The Gx takes the win cuz it great for overland and it's more comfortable and spacious than the 4runner. I own a 3rd gen 4runner too

@@Delight.AutoCRAFTNot sure what year your 3rd gen 4Runner you own but the 2001 to 2002 3rd gen 4Runner has the first generation ATRAC that is similar to what was implemented in the 2000 Land Cruiser 100. That is also why 2001-2002 4Runner does not have the rear e-locker option. Also the same reason 2000+ Land Cruiser/LX470 have no rear locker option and a beef up front diff. I own a 99 4Runner with the open front and rear e-locker and my brother owns a 01 4Runner with first gen ATRAC, no rear locker. The 4th gen 4Runner/GX470 have the second generation ATRAC (which is faster reacting than the first gen ATRAC on the 00-01 4Runner and the 2000-2007 Land Cruiser/LX470).

@@runnerxa I own a 2002 t4r with the full time AWD and never came across Atrac... I'll do more research and get back to you.

@@Delight.AutoCRAFT All 2001 and 2002 4Runner 4WDs have the multi-mode 4WD option that was on the 99-00 Limited 4Runner 4WDs which allow you to have full time AWD (with an open center diff). You have the option to lock the center diff in 4HI or 4LO.

@@runnerxa yeah, I know they had the multimode and an option to lock the centre diff, but I just check and no the 3rd gen didn't have Atrac, it was first implemented on the 3rd gen 4runner and the gx470.. I do admire your knowledge of the Toyota 4wd system, nice meeting another enthusiast. 🤝

@@4WDisLife Alright then, would you kindly explain? I know the GX has a V8 engine and with the right tires, it can virtually drive through most terrains, except it's not as good a rock crawler as the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco nd the FJ Cruiser specifically.

@@dermotwallace5533 now I agree 100% of what you just said. Being a ifs it has its limitations, plus the earlier gen gx has a weaker rear diff which I already seen one blown on the trails. I guess it all depends on what people do with it, it does overlanding perfectly fine but when it comes to rocks, it’s not as ideal as other competitors

@@4WDisLife Cool. Now, my point is that judging from your video, driving up that trail could have been way easier had the driver had the right tyres as well as chosen a better path to make it up that hilly slope.

@@dermotwallace5533 are you speaking of the first hill? If so, then I may have to respectfully disagree, that rolling rock hill is a very hard climb, 30 degrees incline, big and loose rocks up to the boulder ledge and very dug out. You really have to be there to actually judge the difficulty, you are welcome to check out other comparison video of mine for that same hill climb. A vehicle without rear locker will struggle on it.

Globally, there is no 4Runner platform. It has been based on a Land Cruiser Prado platform since the 3rd gen 4Runner/Hilux Surf. In this case it is a 120 series Land Cruiser Prado, which the GX470/4Runner, and FJC is based off. The GX470 body looks very similar to the Land Cruiser Prado 120 series body. It is a 4Runner body on a 120 series Land Cruiser Prado chassis or a FJ Cruiser body on a 120 series Land Cruiser Prado chassis. And there are also 3 door Land Cruiser Prado 120 (shortened wheelbase version not sold in North America) models available as well. 3rd gen 4Runner is based on 90 series Land Cruiser Prado platform. 5th gen 4Runner is based on 150 series Land Cruiser Prado platform. The new North America Land Cruiser and GX550 is based on the 250 series Land Cruiser Prado platform. The LX600 is based on the 300 series full size Land Cruiser platform just like the LX570 is based on the 200 series full size Land Cruiser platform.
