I will not buy a Lexus because they only install run flat tires that I will never buy, Michelin regular tires with a spare tire and Jack is what I want. A quality tire providing the best possible ride that gives you the smoothest ride and a quieter cabin.
NX450+ owner here! 17,000 miles and counting. I’ve taken the car cross country and in extreme conditions (off-road, thick snow, mountain). This car has performed amazingly!!! I have a feeling the longer this car is out, more people will chime in on its versatility. I also regularly get 40 miles on the EV range. In short, Lexus undersells and over delivers in this car segment! The car is smooth as butter and luxurious. Worth every penny so far!!
As an owner, I concur. 4,000 miles on mine and the in town EV mode and powerful drivetrain on the highway are an amazing combination. Especially when you get 35+ mpg no matter how you drive.
As an owner, 14k miles here, I concur. So glad to have a plug-in hybrid with this range and yet have the ability to not be stuck with the lacking EV charging network.
Interested in hearing about your experience in the snow. I’m considering this as my daily driver and ski car. Given the apparently lackluster eAWD, I’m concerned about safety traversing highway 80 through the Sierra Nevada even with snow tires. What was it like in snow/ice at highway speeds? Did you experience much slip? Thanks in advance.
@@BigRedChico it did well in the snow. The only issue might be clearance, anything over 6 inches of snow I would need a lift. If you will be driving in these condition most of the time I would suggest a good set of winter tires. As far as the eAWD, it performed very well and seems to be dialed in really well from the factory.
@@BigRedChico i drive my NX450h+ here north of Montreal in heavy snow and icy conditions quite a lot. Owned Subaru Outback and Toyota 4Runner before. Very happy with my NX AWD performance so far. Does not feel disconnected at all.
I’ve had my NX450h+ F-Sport for a year and love it. It is the perfect daily driver. Great EV/fuel efficiency, technology/driver assist features, ride quality, acceleration, and material/build quality. It will have low running costs, be reliable, and low depreciation. No range anxiety and I drove it over 6 months before I refueled. Platform sharing with the RAV4 means inexpensive and good parts availability. Driving dynamics are fine for this segment of vehicle, it is as engaging as I need an SUV to be. I have a weekend car if I really need the ‘drivers car’ or 10/10ths driving experience. I’m sure the BMW, Acura, and Genesis are great to drive but not a contender without a PHEV powertrain. Volvo Recharge is appealing but Volvo reliability is questionable. All of these will have higher running costs (fuel, maintenance) and depreciation compared to the Lexus. Maybe a good option to lease but not as compelling for 5+ year long term ownership. I did cross shop a RAV4 Prime which is also an excellent car but the interior design and tech felt last generation and less refined. For a car to own long term, paying the premium for the Lexus quality and latest generation tech felt well worth it. If you’re looking for a PHEV SUV, I highly recommend the NX and would not trade mine for any of the alternatives cars mentioned. RAV4 Prime is a fine choice if the Lexus is out of budget. The upcoming yet to be announced Mazda PHEV SUV is an alternative worth looking into as well.
Yeah, I'm with you. In a crossover or SUV I'm not really looking for driving dynamics. Those vehicles aren't made to be fun to drive, they're made for utility and practicality. If I want fun to drive I'll take a car.
Does yours have HUD, my R4P has a tachometer only on the hud, engine randomly comes on even when in EV only mode. I think its a maintenance mode thing but does come on semi frequently, but the infotainment/dash doesn't show ICE is on at all. The dash has standard eco/power/charge , only the hud shows the tach if you change it in the options. I try to run my engine at least once a month burn off moisture/etc since I charge it nightly. I know a person with a Prius prime charged it for nearly 2 years and go to finally use gas and nothing worked. The dealer said gas turned to jelly.
@@kyrosmike Common things that will bring the gas engine on: 1) Using the defroster. 2) Using the adaptive cruise control. 3) Excessive downhill/ brake regeneration.
It's a glorified Rav4 prime. Too much money imo. I would get a X5 45e, much more refined, gets 40 miles Electric only, a lot more space, far superior tech and drive feel. And this comes form a LS 500 F sport owner.
I've had the older NX as a service loaner, and your comments about the high beltline, driving position, and tight(-er) interior are spot-on. It's a very nice small CUV. But for $60k, I think I'd go large with a GX and cope with the horrific fuel economy, knowing nothing will go wrong with it. In my area I have to worry about deer season - apparently in Illinois you have herds of chairs running out into the road. Did you take it to the local dealer for repair or just apply more zip-ties until you returned it? I think you could start a new series on the service experience you get with various brands.
totally different shoppers with other priorities. If I was looking at an NX sized electric hybrid, an oversized GX with crappy mileage is not even on the list.
Bought this one on my wife's boyfriend's suggestion, even if I already drive a 2005 Prius. Paid extra $5K ADM as well but you know what they say- Happy Wife, Happy Life!
Somehow, I’m guessing “Jack hit a chair on the highway” was actually “Mark curbed it at the Kum & Go” ..but either way I loved the silence dotted with scraping plastic noises/giggling. It brought back fond auto auction memories. Hop in a clean looking off-lease whatever to drive it across two states to a dealer only to get fifty feet onto a Denver onramp and realize it’s suddenly dragging its plastic ass on the ground behind it. “WTF are we doing?” was said so, so many times.
My Rav4 Prime is great, this is way more money has less EV range. It does look more premium but sounds like all the styling has taken a toll on the usability and space. The prime also does not feel like a sports car, but being able to tow 1500+lbs while still getting over 27mpg is excellent.
Enjoyed this video but you left out one key factor for the Lexus NX450h+, and that is availability. I have been on a dealer waiting list for the NX350h for 12 months and the dealer told me to not even try to get the 450h+ since the 450h+ was being allotted to California. The dealer would not even guess on how long I would have to wait for the 450h+ version or say that I would ever be able to get one.
I live in the middle of the USA. Lexus dealer near me told me this vehicle is a unicorn. They would be happy to put me on their waiting list, but it would be well over a year, or longer, to get one. RAV4 Prime is not any better in terms of wait list. Frusterating.
I find the dash on the NX to be nice. The fact that the top tilts toward you means dust is less likely to collect on it and the surrounds reduce glare. With my current VW the bottom is tilted towards you so you have a nice slope for dust to settle all over the dash. It's a small detail, but very much functional.
Lousy disconnected eAWD setup, gruff 4 pot, Rubbery CVT, RAV4 roots, not truly luxury interiors, 60K plus pricing. Why would you need this piece of $h!t? Savagegeese is right on spot with the review. This is atleast $10K more at all trim levels to make even a compromised buying sense.
My wife has a RAV4 Prime SE. That was about $43,000 before the $7500 incentive. It's the best around town car we've ever had with over 40 miles of usable EV range. It's also an amazing road trip car. The passing power would probably surprise most people. I'm sure the Lexus is better but it doesn't seem $20k better to me. I think they need to do more to differentiate between them. Awesome video as always!
In its class, the RAV4 PHEV may be good, but not comparable to this NX, the fit and finish, the interiors are absolutely different. No one cares or notices a RAV4.
@@kpmmsupervision1297 Both cars are fine, they are cousins, not that much of a difference in terms of 'driving'. Both offer reliability. Biggest different is price and design - user preference. I'd still pick the NX over RAV.
@@dgdave2673 may surprise you, but most people dont buy a car to get noticed, its whats best value and most practical for them, so as long as they care thats all that matters, in that sense the Rav4 definitely is a good car as you'll see in the sales numbers.
Along the wisdom "less is more", your production becomes better by simply leaving potential outtakes in. Makes it entertaining and more relatable, because not sterile or inauthentic. Also long segments of talking thoughtfully and clearly instead of switching back and forth between two camera angles to piece together sentence fragments for 'perfection'. It is basically a meta approach of not going overkill with technological crutches. Your reviews are like the cars you like. They have character. I am looking forward to April 1st. 😁
I’m surprised how conveniently the car is being compared to gas cars like RDX and X3. You pick one of these cars for their efficiency which he gets right at 7:50. Compare this car to a German efficient hybrid, which you can’t because there isn’t one that gives anything remotely close to 35 mpg. Neither do the German cars have a normal hybrid drive train. The x5 plugin is rated to give 19 city/22 highway. 😂🤡 This video for some random reason compares a plugin to a performance car. You’re buying this car for the low running cost, fuel efficiency, and reliability and not whatever crap the German cars offer.
I ordered the 350h AWD in february of last year and was able to get my mine in march 22. This was for my parents as their car was getting older and needed a change. I wanted the 450h because while it was more expensive, it was allowed to get an EV Credit which offset it, but the state I was purchasing was not a zero-carbon state. So majority of these were being shipped to California where people were paying 10K above MSRP (dealer in cali told me to just wait it out). Anyways, I'm happy with the car or rather, my parents are. I am dumbfounded by some technological choices such as how terrible the wireless charging is and that if your phone does not connect to the system, it will interrupt the screen every 5 minutes and I consider this to be a distraction issue.
At this point Patagonia should really sponsor the Savage boys. I wonder if they call each other up in in the morning to tell each other to wear Patagonia gear.
Anyone who owned and pays attention to fit and finishes to lexus models, this new gen nx and rx feels cheap ugly looking in comparison to previous gen. Piano black plastic, leather stitched layerd leather is gone, doors dont have solid heft like before, 4cly engine vs turbo in base nx with higher prices, rattely run flats, etc etc. Save your money.
Ordered it in June and still awaiting patiently for the delivery, I tried Genesis and Acura, but my Lexus loyalty overpowered them (this will be my fourth Lexus since 2004). As the reliability and quietness of the Lexus are the most important to me, so I am happy to stay in Lexus family for the years to come. NX450h+ is the car suits me the best, even better than the new RX.
Hyundai is a dead brand to me as are KIA and Genesis. When problems surface, they deny them, and told me burning a quart of oil every 500 miles is 'normal', and when the engine blew at 120k under extended warranty, that was due to 'normal' wear and tear. Lexus treats me like their favorite customer, even though my 06 GX470 has 225k on it. I always get loaner Lexus when I get service, rides to the airport, and after a recall, they detailed it and filled it with gas 'no charge'. To me, paying more for a Lexus is worth it.
Good point, have you kept all 4 cars since 2004? The reason is one of my friends says BMW is super reliable, but he's always leasing a new car every 3-4 years. So he wouldn't really know how reliable BMW is beyond 3-4 years.
Same here. Our Hyundai Sonata and Kia Sorento went into dealership so many times before hitting 100k miles. Our Toyota Tundra with 210k miles and Lexus Es300h with 130k miles had zero issue. No more Korean brand for our family and close friends.
@@TheBreakfastLoverBMW=Broke my Wallet. Empty $ pits over 5 years old and/or 50k miles. These are facts not opinions. I had one (2013 X5 w 94 k miles) bought it when it was 5 years old and it fell apart within 8 months that I owned it. Traded it in for a 1 owner 2013 ES350 which I kept for 24 months. I no longer own that Lexus I sold it for my current 2002 ES300 which is just as good if not better than the ES350
@@TheBreakfastLover lol I'm a big BMW fan, but I've never heard anyone call them "super reliable". To be fair the new turbo engines are bulletproof, and their reliability ratings are the best they've been in a long time. 1995-2019 bmw had a lot more issues. My 2010 535i is up to 113k miles and I plan on taking it to 200k if I can
I drive almost exclusively highway miles thus the electric contribution is less important to me. $60,000 for this vehicle is insanely expensive. Currently looking at the Mazda CX50.
cx50 is a huge piece of turd..not even comparable...torsion beam rear and unrefined ride, antiqudated drivetrain (be it base 2.5 ancient 4banger used in mazda3's forever or the truck like 2.5T that hates to rev , decade old 6spd slow transmission), terrible mpg and cost cutting all around inside and outside, couple gen behind on driver's assist and other tech. it's even worse than the CX5..it has nice looking design and lots of plastic cladding though.
@@gilboman So Mazda drivetrain is antiquated but a $60,000 Lexus with a 2.5-liter Atkinson 4-banger that sounds like a wood chipper and makes 180 hp isn’t? 🤔
So the 2nd from the top CX50 is around $42,000 and actually gets pretty good reviews. The criticisms are valid albeit somewhat exaggerated. The Lexus 450h is over $60,000, seems a bit cramped per several reviewers, and will never return me enough savings in gas to pay the over $20,000 (with tax) difference. The NX350 or 350h are worth looking at but even then are $6,000 to $8,000 more expensive than the CX50.
@@Ficon the 2.5 in mazdas is decades old and who tf uses 6 speeds anymore? You're trying put a plug in hybrid on the same level as an engine from the 90's because it's heard in the cabin? Idiot....
I appreciate the work going into PHEV tech, but I will be avoiding this phase of cars entirely. I will hold on to a normal ICE or ICE+hybrid car until EVs are solid enough to go straight there. I just don't want this level of mechanical complexity in a vehicle. I love how mechanically simple and efficient EVs are, and adding an entire ICE drivetrain back in defeats the purpose for me. I'm taking delivery of a stone age simple 2023 4Runner, and I will hold onto it until sort of affordable tough EV 4x4's have hit their stride.
Everything. More wood trim more leather, more metal trim, a higher degree of precision and build quality on the Mercedes than lexus. Lexus uses the same injection molded plastics and the same hard plastic doors as a lesser Toyota
Again, an outstanding review. SavageGeese is the best motor enthusiast channel on all of RU-vid. About the car: Just the cost is enough to pass on this RAV4 in a prom dress. I'd rather pay the extra coin for a hybrid RX (maybe a good used one with service records or Certified). At least you'd get a useful back seat and bigger cargo area. Maybe I'll luck out and find one with a Mark Levinson sound system.
I’d rather save and get a Camry w the v6. Practically the same car but significantly more refined than the nx. The smoothness of the 3.5 simply cannot be touched by any Toyota leuxs 4 cylinder
@@MAAtx it’s a fact. The Camry w the v6 especially is Toyotas best car they have right now. The GR corolla is close but it gets way too expensive for its size. Once you drive a 3.5L v6 Toyota any Toyota 4 cylinder turbo or not will fell like a penalty box
@@naveenthemachine I agree, the 2GR is an incredible motor. I had an IS350 for a while and loved it in that. The fact that peak power comes at practically redline is also quite fun 😁
It’s a great CUV, however it’s for people who are single and have one pet. I think they should’ve put this tech into a IS350 and make it into a hybrid wagon!
Pure EVss can make sense. Read some of the EV sites or EV channels and anyone who buys a hybrid is an idiot. Also ICE cars will be worthless by 2025. And they seem serious with these proclamations.
@@benjaminsmith2287 Insofar as the general shift to electric cars is concerned, I call bullshit... its a government mandated novelty. Why? Batteries and the electrical grid. Battery efficiency drops dramatically in cold weather. Presently, there are rolling brownouts merely because people run their home air conditioners! What happens when electric cars are sold in really large numbers? Just when will we double or triple our generating capacity? I don't see people lining up to have coal-fired or nuclear generating stations built in their backyards. BTW, China has a monopoly on materials for battery production. EV 's are nothing more than the whimsical dream of some bloviating governmental bureaucrat, owned by the Chinese, who is worrying about a crisis that doesn't exist. I could go on for about as long as it takes to charge an electric car, but, I have to go back to work, saving up for my replacement battery pack, produced by slave labor... to save the planet, of course .
1. Isn't Toyota's fastest car the Supra? 2. People don't buy the NX450h to "drive it hard". The target buyers are not those who buys the Supra and goes to the tracks. 3. Your reviews need to be more "customized" and match the cars with their intended buyers and not every car needs to be a "performance car".
I'll wait until this vehicle is 4 years old and has lost 35 - 40% of its value. Then and only then will it be the perfect car haha. In all seriousness, I'm a car guy through and through, but for my daily driver, I want something that's comfortable, reliable, somewhat utilitarian, and efficient. The NX fits the bill perfectly. This is coming from a guy who's dream sports car is a Superformance MKIII Cobra.
There's an all electric version of the GV70 coming, or if you can't wait, perhaps shop the GV60, because if you're into a car this ugly, then the GV60 is in your wheelhouse.
Lexus makes some great product, this one is not one of them. It would be fine if we called it a Toyota, slap the Lexus branding, charge an extra $15k and it's just not reasonable.
The current trend of high beltlines and small windows is not my thing. Not only does it look artificially "sporty" but the visibility out of the vehicles is horrible compared to more conventional proportions.
I’ve had this 3 months, and I think it takes more than a week, never for a professional, to dial in to how to best drive this car. I love it both as an owner, quiet and huge economy (150 mpg!), but also as a driver. I really enjoy how it drives and have zero issues with CVT, brakes or handling. Have used only one tank of fuel in 3 months
I don't see the point of spending 60 grand to save a few dollars on gas. Get the regular one for 40 grand. With hybrids you have the complexity of both gas and electric. Stick to one. You're better off
Wait wait, the RDX has better materials than this?! But i thought Acura is technically a premium brand, not a luxury brand so they typically cheap out on some materials🤔
It's strange that a car that costs 60K would have a dashboard completely covered in urethane and not a single leather stitch. That's really interesting!
When you sit in it it's much more premium then it appears and is very well built, It didn't feel any less premium then an x5 45e I sat in for comparison but did feel worse then the Audi and especially Genesis GV80
We love our 350h! But not for $60K..When I looked at the Toyota's/Lexus in person, at $45K for our NX350h and Safety Sense 3.0 it's a pretty good value, especially compared to $42K Rav4 hybird or $43K Venza's older tech.
Neighter NX or RX offer a usuable trunk, considering the trunk size of course. I do not understand the decisioning behind it, especially that BMW offers better trunk usability...
Can you comment on the whole “cable gate” situation in some detail? According to the internet (I know) the Lexus and Toyota cable that connects the back hybrid motor goes through degradation do to salt and water…isn’t covered by the hybrid warranty, and costs $5k to repair. Is there substance behind this or is it just a ploy to get people to cancel there orders on popular awd Lexus/toyota hybrids? Thanks.
Pretty sure Ahmed of the Car Care Nut channel covered this in one of his videos. He puts a car on the hoist and shows how the plug now has a cover, or something to that effect, to prevent the corrosion issue.
@@lookinin123 maybe the geese boys can speak to it. It has always had the cover. They re-vamped it in 2021 but people are saying the issue is still popping up. The NX 450h+ is great in EV mode and serenely quiet. That said when the 2.5L engine fires, you hear it a lot. Lexus tried to mute it down compared to the very rattly Rav4, but the fact of the matter is while the A25A-FXS is a VERY fuel efficient engine, the refinement and smoothness you expect from the Lexus badge up front is simply not there. Also, the price tag is steep for what is essentially a Rav4 Prime with more amenities and leather. For those who have short commutes the savings would be great as is the quiet ride in EV mode and the hybrid option gives it great MPG when on roadtrips, but I'm not quite sure the value proposition is here. I would be looking REAL hard at the XC40 Recharge or the more refined X3 xDrive30e for about the same money.
@@mikej238 I’ve driven other vehicles with the 2.5L dynamic force engine. It’s noisy and unrefined. The reason I know this is because we also own a 2018 rav4 and the 4 cylinder in that one is significantly smoother than the current one

Naw man Toyotas/lexus AREN'T known to be the most spacious. My family sold their 07 CRV and got a 18 Rav4, one of the things i hate abt it was how cramped it felt when i sat in the front, and the glove box would hit my knees when i would open it (in my ideal seating position as a 5.5ft person mind you)
You just never been in other rivals, like the RDX, it's a night and difference in the RDX vs NX. The only toyota/lexus i felt was decent in space is the new grand highlander/TX, and the toyota sienna
@Stefin770 I have been in most competitor SUVs. Question. Just what are you doing in these vehicles that you need so much room? I value reliability and great gas mileage over having room to change pants or whatever you are needing to do in your land yacht of choice. RDX fuel economy sucks and transmissions are notoriously weak. Each to his own I guess.
Why should Lexus make their own platforms when they already have arguably the best ones that they (keep in mind) codevelop with Toyota and Lexus isn’t 100% focused on driving dynamics yes they factor that In but most Lexus shoppers aren’t looking for the best handling they want something that’s more luxurious/fancy than a Toyota and will still last unlike most of its competitors
These days lexus isn’t more luxurious than a Toyota. Except the LC and ES Also if Acura and genesis can make better unique bespoke platforms why can’t Lexus?
Toyota/Lexus only have 1 rear drive unibody TNGA platform which is GA-L (LS/LC/Mirai/S220 Crown) and nothing for the compact RWD segment or other segments, I guess that's why when they updated the IS it is still on old 3rd gen IS platform, don't know why they can't just shrink the GA-L platform like before when the GS was still around maybe because Toyota side don't need it since GR86 is not on a Toyota platform also it is too small to be IS or a rear drive based NX. They are not gonna use Supra's BMW platform to build an IS and NX off of. But then again the NX using the GA-K rav4 platform gives lexus more money to spend on other shit on the NX which is a good thing.
I went from a 2020 rdx to this and won't be looking back. The Acura had serious quality issues. The pano roof was replaced 2 weeks into owning and the front brakes were replaced twice. Fit and finish and gas mileage can't be beat.
i completely understand you on the build quality as i own one of the very first redesigned RDX back in 2020 but do you feel claustrophobic in the NX now? This is also 30-40k more (Canadian) than when i bought that RDX with A Spec... so it still feels worth it to you?
