Lexus vs BMW Reliability - Why Lexus Engines last 300 000 Miles and BMW Doesn't!
It's BMW vs Lexus reliability and BMW engines vs Lexus engines in the comparison of these top luxury car brands. This is why Lexus cars are reliable and last for so long, while BMW cars are not reliable (generally) and do not last nearly that long.
Don't get me wrong, it can happen and you can take good care of a BMW engine and still get a lot of miles out of it. However, it's the Lexus cars and the Lexus engines that come from the Toyota brand that really help take this #reliability in their luxury #cars to a whole other level.
In any case, you'll get the answer to if BMW are reliable and if Lexus are reliable in our comparison of #BMW vs #Lexus.
Where we believe that Life's Too Short To Drive Boring Cars so we just don't and you shouldn't either.

I think Beamers, Benzes, and Audis compete with each other. Lexus doesn't get into all of those competition games. I think Lexus has a firm understanding of their target demographic and sticks with the tried and true. The tortoise vs the hare...a reliable and faithful wife vs the flashy and wild mistress/side-piece.

I'll take the wild hot chick all day/night. But there's more to it. Jag F-Types don't rust (theres one small steel guard plate, mine looks perfect after 8 years), they use the same transmission as an $800K Rolls Royce, they tune to 700HP without creating issues, you can abuse them daily and drag race weekly with no breakage or even change over time, they are amazingly refined, super comfortable, built like tanks, a little too heavy, fast as hell cars that are unbeatable off the line (AWD) or from a roll (RWD). BMW nor Toyota-Lexus has an analog.

Back in 1977 just out of high school, I worked for a car leasing company in Los Angeles. It was nice working there because I got to drive all the fancy cars I could never afford to drive. I wasn’t really into cars so much, and never even knew what a BMW was. When I got to drive my first 320i. WOW, that thing was tight! Steering was a dream, twisty roads and corners were a blast!! Now hold on a minute a very high end toyota camry xle or xse hybrid or non hybrid is still extremely nice and should be an option. I would consider getting a camry xle or xse hybrid which is high tech but extremely reliable too as toytas ecvt is proven tough and it's extremely fuel efficient like 47mpg while having a beautiful creme or red perforated leather interior as standard on the higher end models for just 30-32k and it doesn't look like a boring car. The new camry looks super sleek and sharp unlike the last generation. I'd hold on the Lexus consider a premium grade 4 cyl fwd camry. Don't bother with the v6 and AWD it's not worth it. The 4 cyl and fwd is better and I drove it. It's surprisingly quick and even more reliable. If you ever have to do spark plugs, chains, head gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets or manifold ect having 1 engine bank of 4 cylinders is better than 2 banks each having 3 cylinders that makes up a v6. Consider the premium grade Camry and go look at some at the dealer.

Very true about BMW oil change intervals. Here in Western Australia where the climate is considered extreme in summer, I had an F80M3 Competition. The BMW recommended oil change interval for the S55 3.0 straight 6 twin turbo engine in the M3 was 2 years or 24,000 km! When I asked for oil changes every 6 months, BMW said it was outside the service contract. I still had my oil changed every 6 months but BMW charged me $350 each time. I've been driving Hondas for the past 20 years, and have been pretty happy with them. Never had one leave me sitting on the side of the road, and they run like new, even when they have a lot of miles on them , if you just do basic maintenance. The part where you said BMW had 15,000 mile oil change intervals? WoW! That's insane. Not many oils could hold up that far, and the first thought that came to mind was the filter disintegrating, just like you said. I probably over maintain my vehicle, change oil and filter between 5 and 7k miles, and change all other fluids as well pretty regularly. It has worked well for me. Cheap insurance. Had my eye on a used BMW, but will hold off now, and get me a new Acura TL S-type, when I have enough saved for a decent down payment. Thanks again for sharing all that valuable information.

If you live in the BMW world always lease! That’s what wealthy people do with them. If you do buy one used off warranties make sure you own the following: 1) ideally a lift or a jack and jack stands and either a home with a garage or driveway 2) Basic hand Tools! Plus some specialized tools (it’s BMW) 3) The Vehicles Bentley Manual 3a) Technician Service Manual 4) Specialized software to code certain parts and diagnose codes (INPA) 5) Time! 6) AAA Roadside Assistance 7) A spare vehicle 8) Minimum of $2,000 reserved monthly for original parts. 9) A willingness to search and ship existing broken parts overseas (Europe) due to it being discontinued by BMW.

Spot on on this subject and reasons. 5K miles should be max for oil change using quality synthetic oil. Especially for performance cars with smaller forced induction engines. Lots of longevity and reliability failure problems stem from more cheap plastic and other materials more than design like you said, and yes, heat. Performance cars are fun, and inspiring, especially if you don't drive them a lot and wear them down faster, because when they do, and break diwn, it's huge expense in parts and labor snd headaches. Great videos. 👍

Having owned a Lexus IS and 428i, there is an obvious difference in what these vehicles aim to accomplish. The BMW is a lot more engaging to drive and I definitely prefer it to the Lexus. But the Lexus was built well and obviously had its benefits. It was a comfortable cruiser and I know having this BMW is going to cost me in the long run. There is no doubt that the driving experience is better in the Bimmer. Had a Harley for 10 years and switched to a Ducati Diavel. Same thing, I know the Duke is going to cost me in the long run, but the experience is far better on the Ducati.

If Lexus made an equally enjoyable car to drive with a cutting edge interior, I think they’d be onto something. As you said a lot of German luxury car buyers are there for a reason as cars like Lexus, will drive like a Toyota with extra trim and leather. Similarly, I wish the German cars found a way to improve their reliability credentials - sometimes you don’t need to be the most reliable but improved enough that the trade off is worth it for the driving experience to a greater proportion of customers than it is today (i.e. win over potential Lexus customers who are on the fence)

According to an article I read in Consumer Reports, Lexus cars have been known to last over 1,000,000 if well maintained. I personally am not demanding of my cars when it comes to performance and my priorities are in the order 1) reliability 2) Safety 3) Comfort 4) Cost 5) Performance. For this reason Lexus is the only luxury brand I would even consider, but I would never part with my inherited from grandmother 1999 Town Car unless it got totaled. Lexus cars are great and all, but in my opinion the Town Car is the King of all cars and can make it to 300,000 miles as well. Seriously, compared to other sedans It's like driving an Imperial Star Destroyer down the road while everyone else is in an x-wing or Corellian Corvette.

@kevind4946
@kevind4946 2 года назад
@@User-cb4jm sure, it’s well-known about the reliability of Lexus. I’m not arguing that they aren’t. What I’m saying is that, people know this about BMWs and they don’t really care and continue to buy them. I’ve only driven German cars and have never had any issues with them. But that’s because I take care of my cars. My guess is that the statistics may be due to the fact that most people who buy German cars just can’t afford to take care of them, hence the reliability issues. Granted, that doesn’t account for engine issues that are not the fault of the drivers. But Toyota and several other manufacturers are no strangers to those issues arising when they use subpar engine parts, etc. They just improve the parts and fix the mistakes for the next generation of engine.

My first and only BMW as a 1999 323i. I had list of issues that the dealer just couldn't seem to fix permanently, they would put the same part back and the issue would come back. At some point they stopped writing up tickets and just gave me the car back each time with no paper work. So it could be that BMW successfully hides issues and number or repairs from the engineering teams and that's why they don't get addressed. So they just keep making cars with the same problems through the entire production cycle of the model. I had to get rid of the BMW after 2 years because it was just to dangerous to drive. By comparison my Toyota Camry went 160k miles with only two minor repairs beyond normal maintenance items like battery and tires. I think the rear break pads were still the factory ones! Oh, and no rotor dust on my wheels like on the BMW.

Yes, one thing is protecting the rest of the engine from the turbo heat. The other issue with these Hot V turbos is that the oil is getting very hot while flowing through the turbos. It deteriorates way faster. The entire concept seems questionable, you get almost instant turbo response, but the engine won't last long and requires frequent maintenance.

Warranties are begrudgingly offered to negate a lack of consumer confidence in a car. That’s why Kias and the like have extra long warranties to change consumer perception. If a brand had high customer confidence, they basically could sell the car with a short warranty and they know they won’t lose a single sale due to lack of customer confidence on reliability, etc.
