What a nice find! This is one intense Medea. There are so few singers who can really sing this role properly, and I think Gencer is one of them. A mad scene shouldn't sound pretty, it should sound like an explosion of anger, insanity, pain with occasional delusion as she sounds here. Very impressed...
She is always honest and exciting and never boring. There are many with a preytty voice but without the ability to reflect love and life as this great artist does. 🤩
Well....I am REALLY impressed!!!! Until today I have not heard a soprano worth listening to in this role other than Callas. But I REALLY enjoy Gencer's performance here. Still not as much as Callas...but at least she is comparable. Thank you for posting.
Es extraordinaria, mete casi tanto miedo como la Callas. Qué intensidad, qué fuerza, que convicción. Se pueden encontrar defectos, claro, pero comparándola con la Caballé de Mérida, por ejemplo... Esta es una Medea de verdad. Claro, siempre miramos a Callas, pero ni Olivero, ni Rysanek, ni ninguna otra alcanzan, en mi opinión, esta intensidad. Bueno, la verdad es que Magda es brutal también...
Great interpretation, yet she is to "verist" in her vocal approach unlike Callas who adopts the classic declamatory style and gains in intensity by doing so. Still Leyla Gencer does a good job....
at 8:28 - when she sings "erano figli tuoi" I get goose-bumps! A phrase sung in such as way as to never be forgotten! The essence of the difference between Medea and Norma!
Medea must be one of the most difficult opera for a dramatic soprano and Gencer handles it very well here. However Medea is really a heavy role for her spinto voice and she didn't sing it very often (maybe she sang it only once in all her career).
And yet, the black and white video of this production exists... Let us hope that someone manages to retrieve it from the RAI vaults before it is too late!
Vocalmente bene, interpretativamente una sofferenza. Da genceriano questa esecuzione mi ha sempre addolorato: perché se la Gencer non si fosse atteggiata a grande tragica a tutti i costi (che non era) ne sarebbe uscito un personaggio interessante.
Matteo Marazzi com'è facile di parlare ... avevo la fortuna di sentire la sua voce dal vivo degli anni 1958 in poi . La Gencer dal vivo aveva una delle voci più belle negli ultimi 60 anni . poi cosa scrivete qua sul YT i giovani della sua vocalità divina mi fate semplicemente ridere . il vecchio . ps. ''grazie'' alle vostre ''teorie'' e ''ignoranza'' da anni la vera arte lirica purtroppo non esiste più .
Infatti non l'ha criticata dal punto di vista vocale, ma da quello interpretativo. Se da un lato i "giovani" possono essere ignoranti, dall'altro voi "vecchi" siete ottusamente prevenuti nei confronti di chi non ha potuto ascoltare dal vivo gli artisti di quel passato glorioso di cui blaterate a volte (come in questo caso) a sproposito. Come puoi criticare tanto veementemente questa persona che non conosci, e poi addirittura, partendo da questa critica infondata, generalizzare dicendo che chi è vissuto dopo l'età dell'oro della lirica è automaticamente un ignorante? È proprio vero che a certe persone dovrebbe essere proibito l'accesso a Internet...
The score is ailing her, actually. This is not her area of expertise, i guess. There are moments when she sounds like a suicidal puppy. But, i have to admit that she is the only one who is not being killed by the perilous role. So, kudos to her for the bravery and artistry. I'm not going to get into a Callas comparison. Gencer is too valuable for me to do that.
ci sono momenti per me convincenti..altri che rimango...non vorrei giudicare..costernarto..sembra troppo forte il riferimento ad altre interpreti, quasi il limite vero a lasciarsi ad una sua possibilissima interpretazione.. pero'!
