My dad used to work for Eastern Counties in the 80’s. When I was three years old I went to work with him one day. The sound of these Nationals in the bus depot and the smell of Derv and smoke have stuck with me ever since.
I have pondered the same question. I used to be quite terrified of Leyland Nationals when I was a littlun. That whining and the glug-glug-glug were bizarre and disturbing to my young ears. A sound I'll never forget!
LOVERLY!!! ,All self respecting Leyland 510, engines should be, noisy, smelly and blot out the sun on start up. Any National 510 than runs clean and quiet ,then there is something seriously wrong.
@@craigybus1 quite surprised by that, I don't remember the silencers and tailpipes sitting that low on the 510 powered nationals - looks like it's been converted from the usual side exit exhaust at the very least.
Cold diesel engines should not be revved hard like this after they have fired up as there is no need for it whatsoever & will only result in long term engine damage! Some more respect would have been nice!
Mathew Lovell , try telling that to the drivers on a cold morning , how are you supposed to build the air up ? If you don't rev it and just let it idle it will take forever , I've never ever heard any complaints from the diesel fitters , in fact if a fitter had to move one from cold he would rev the bolix off it just the same , I guess you've never drove a bus in service .
