NTC is nothing more than a desert where we took helicopters to crash them. With diesel runaway I always figured my t-shirt jammed into the intake would work. Also thought a fuel shut off valve would work. I never thought about the turbo leaking oil. That kinda kills the fuel shut off idea. Fuel, Spark (glow plug) and air keep an engine running as we all know. Looks like chopping air is the ticket. I know turbine engines better than diesel's but I get the idea behind them. Irwin more like sweating. Been there three times winter, spring and summer rotations. Winter is brutal cold at night like my hometown Tucson. Guys who never been in the desert didn't believe me. After that rotation they believed me. Summer rotation I told my guys to use the whole salt pack from their MRE's. Didn't believe me and watching ten soldiers going through muscle cramps was worth it. Do you believe me now? Lesson learned in our AAR. Listen to the guy that grew up in the desert. He might know things about living in the desert. Fucking do pushups till I get cramps.
@tylerdurden3722
@tylerdurden3722 11 месяцев назад
@@DobermansRockhe glow plugs are just for starting in cold weather. A diesel ignites it's fuel by compression. When you compress a gas it gets hotter as it's compressed. In a diesel engine, clean air is compressed until 400°C. Then fuel is injected into that hot compressed air...and ignites on impact. The glow plugs is to heat the fuel if it's cold (because the cold fuel lowers the compression temperature more than usual). Once the engin is warmer, it doesn't need the glow plugs anymore. My father's 78 merc ran perfectly fine with no glow plugs whatsoever (except cold mornings). When a runaway happens due to an oil leak, or injector malfunction, the only option is to smother the engine.

If you ever face this, step 1 is to block the intake or dilute the oxygen to suffocate the engine. Don't disconnect the battery or whatever, just pop off the airbox and cover that intake. All combustion relies on an oxidizer (or fluorine if you're launching a smokeless surface to air missile).

Only after working as a Cat driver for 10 years or so did I learn that a diesel engine can runaway. After finding out, made a point to locate the emergency shut off on the 2 machines we were using. I knew if I tripped those and the engine still would not stop, I had a runaway on my hands . Of course I was running Graveyard with no support at the time. One night something happened and I needed to shut down the machine unexpectedly. Pulled the kill switch in the cab. That slowed it down a little, but would not stop. That dreaded chill went down my spine. "RUNAWAY?" Grabbed a ball peen hammer and a flashlight and got into the engine compartment. Found the emergency kill and popped it with the hammer. Thank God; it put it down. Have to think I was starting to suck up crankcase oil and she was fixing to go, but I caught it just in time.

My grandfather once had a runaway engine in his lorry. He stalled the engine by slowly parking the lorry against a pole, then putting the gear in 1st and popping the clutch. There was a loud bang and everything stopped. Turned out the maintenance guy had put the gearbox oil into the hole where the engine oil goes, so the engine was running on excess lubricating oil. The drive train was ruined, but at least it and the engine could be replaced. This was around 50 years or so ago.

While I was going to college, I worked at Power Systems, a Caterpillar dealer in Southern California (this was back around 1990) as a journeyman mechanic. Caterpillar was just starting to introduce electronics to their engines. On the 3406B's, their early model had a PEEK system. It was basically an electronically controlled fuel rack. There was a brushless torque motor that would move the rack. When installing it, one of the mechanics installed the rod of that torque motor on the wrong side of the fuel rack pot. When you'd start the engine, the BTM would move the rack to full fuel, then back to its start position. With that rod on the wrong side of the pot, the BTM pushed the rack to full fuel but never brought it back to start. The tech fired up the engine, and it immediately ran full rpm, well beyond its controlled max RPM. The guy was panicked, running around pulling wires. But, since the BTM was in the wrong position, cutting power to it did nothing. His next move was even better....he jumped in the cab, threw the trans into its top hole, then popped the clutch, thinking it'd stall the engine. It blew the trans right off the engine. Another tech walked over, cracked fuel lines, and it eventually shut down. Wish we had cell phones back then to get a video capture of that.

There was so much smoke, I stopped 6 lanes of traffic. There’s a real risk that the engine seizes and the connecting rods are fired through the block. Get out and stand clear. Switches of the electrical circuits to stop fuel pumps and cylinder ignition." I am not well versed in engine technology at all, but I was looking at that like "Wait what, it's a diesel? How can a diesel have active ignition?" While this might have been a mistake or an attempt at discussing the function of this button to less technically skilled drivers, and it was a bus designed at the end of the 80's, I can see how that might confuse people. (Also, I know that in some countries the battery can be expensive, and next to that, preventing that thing from leaking due to the heat of the engine should it catch fire while on it's way to self-destruction, might also be the idea there. Having another chemical fire on your hands due to a ruptured battery next to a fuel fire from a car should something go wrong there might also be something they tried to avoid).

You're certainly right about the air shut-off. Many (many!!) years ago my 1st truck was a '72 KW with a 318 Detroit V8. I ran coast to coast for a couple of years when I first started out. I had a blown head gasket replaced in Bismarck, North Dakota. When I got back to Milwaukee a few days later, I stopped in a truck wash to clean the truck before going back to my shop. I pulled up a slight slope to get into the wash bay and shut down the truck. Pulling up that slope and immediately shutting off the engine left a rich charge in the intake. When the truck was ready, I started the engine and it ran away almost immediately. The normal RPM limit was between 2100 & 2300 RPM, depending upon who you talked to. That Detroit ran straight up to 3400 RPM while I was yanking on the air shut-off handle... it came off in my hand!!! The engine quickly stopped on its own when a cam follower failed and locked up the engine. After a quick inspection under the cab we found that the steel wire that ran to the butterfly on the 671 Blower intake was never reconnected by the shop mechanic. After spending a week waiting in Bismarck for the head gasket work, I was shut down for another two weeks getting the new problem fixed. When I started driving that KW, I had no experience with that engine. The engine may have reached 3400 RPM but I'm fairly certain my heart was running a whole lot harder than that for a few seconds before the engine seized!!!!

Happened to me with a 1986 Jetta diesel. Bought it from a guy who recommended to add 4L of ATF to crankcase(in addition to the existing quantity of used engine oil), let it idle for thirty minutes, then drain everything and change oil. When I turned off the ignition and removed the key after the 30 minutes, all hell broke loose. It ran-away for 10 minutes until coolant overflowed and engine finally burned off excess oil to shut down. Scary AF. My buddy and I were hiding behind a shed while the old 1.6 spewed out enough smoke to be visible from space. Surprisingly, it just blew the glow plugs and after changing them, proceeded to run like a top for another 100 000km. God I miss that car!

I had an old Farmall 504 in Buffalo New York and unless the block heater was plugged in overnight it would not even think about starting. I also learned about overdoing ether trying to start that tank!!! I learned real fast you only squirt when the engine was cranking and only for about a quarter second. If it didn't catch, WAIT! That engine had glow plugs. Newer ones have an intake heater grid, definitely do not use ether on them! Lessons learned!

Another non runaway instance a connecting rod blew out the side of a block on an engine I was working on outside of the equipment, the trajectory of it was where I was kneeling next to it while it was running moments before, it came out with some force, had I been sitting there it probably wouldn't have ended well.

In commercial trucking the diesel runaway is usually caused by fumes being sucked into the air intake which bypasses the governor. Remember in Canada a guy delivering fuel to a gas station and idling near the tank vents in winter and the truck started to runaway until it self destructed at probably 4000 rpm or higher which caused the bearings on the crank to spin. When i worked in the Canadian Arctic on the DEWLINE which was a cold war radar and communications continuous line we had Jimmy Diesels or Detroit Diesel 671 for power production they had an overspeed shutdown where dampers would slam down and block intake air to kill the engine before destruction. People do not understand that diesel is compression ignition as opposed to spark ignition. More modern diesel engines have electronic injectors and computers but old mechanical diesel engines once started did not need a battery unless running accessories as well as some trucks used air starters.

Having experienced runaway on a 7.3L International engine it can be scary for sure and I had no idea what was happening when it happened. It was pulling excess oil up from the crankcase into the combustion chamber, screaming at about 8k RPM. Died on it's own thankfully when it ran out of oil to burn and I was very lucky no Dave was done. After that happened I learned all about runaway and now it's funny watching everyone scramble around panicked when a short stuffed into the air intake would stop it almost immediately.
@benedictearlson9044
@benedictearlson9044 Год назад
Be very careful stuffing anything into the air intake, the pressure will be incredibly high so if your hand gets sucked in you could lose it.

That is why, in my opinion every person driving a car with turbo-diesel engine and manual transmission should know the drill - if you see the symptoms of a runaway, stop, apply full breaks, put it in the highest gear possible and release the clutch.

If you have one, shoot a fire extinguisher in to the intake. If you own an older turbo diesel I would recommend one. All large trucks are required to have one too. Most of the damage from a runaway happens when the valves float and hit the piston, diesel valve springs just aren't rated for high rpm Also if you have a manual transmission the engine is rarely able to overpower the brakes so jam a large gear and stall the engine.

I was in oil field trucking for almost 20 years and I fully agree that positive air shutdowns are necessary. Problem is that every one I’ve seen needs almost daily maintenance to function properly.

I wonder if an alternative would be providing a part that is easily accessible that is shaped to cover the intake? Grab it and put it on.

@@AToolWithTools typically a semi air cleaner is about 18” in diameter and around 2’ long. That’s if they only have one. Some Peterbuilt and Kenworth models have two. The positive air shutoff valve is currently the most effective solution until someone thinks of something better.

Very educational presentation of what can go wrong with diesels and how to properly deal with them (not shown in most of the video footage) covered in the commentary. You would think this would be covered in the owner's manual and be part of a truckers basic operating knowledge retention test, and if not, it should be.

its very unlikely tho the smartest solution is to have an air intake shut off switch somewhere so if it ever happens the engine just gets chocked. With modern electronics, as the video said, its easily possibly to connect the activation of the shut off to an RPM limit or engine temp limit

What sucks the most is that once the engine is dead it's expensive to replace (if you plan on replacing it that is) with some engines costing 10k or more depending on what type, size, purpose etc.

Me & a buddy were hanging out in his dad's shop while his dad was working on a CAT engine from 1978 , He had been rebuilding it. It started to runaway from him as he was adjusting something on the side of the engine & he/we had no idea what was happening, The screaming diesel literally scared the shit out of us to the point we were just looking at each other in confusion & when it finally went I mean it went like a crate of tnt . Was a crazy ass experience.

Up here in Canada. Any diesel engine used in the oilfield must have a positive air shut off. In case natural gas gets into the engine. They automatically cut off the air in an overspeed situation

The first machine in the video looks and sounds exactly like my grandmother's washing machine which is in the back garden. My grandad once used it as a whacker plate when he was making an asphalt path. Old faithful can also be used as a barbecue as long as it doesn't break its anchoring chains as once happened on a Saturday morning in the 1950's when it run away and tore up the local cricket field.

When I was in the Army, the truck that I was assigned too had a busted cutoff switch. Every time I wanted to turn off the truck, I had to open the hood behind the cab and manually push the solenoid fuel cut-off without causing my hand to slip and go into the fan. Thankfully some genius required diesels to have the solenoid so it made my life a lot easier.

In American Diesel School, Denver , Co. the teachers loved to get us noobies nervous about the possibility of a runaway. We would stand by with a greased board to place over the intake or pull the emergency cutoff on the 2 cycle Detroits. The "chicken stick". Cutting off the air is the way to do it if possible.

An old heavy equipment mechanic told me you can also shut some of these engines down by pinching the fuel return line coming off of the injection pump. However, it is also possible the engine may then pull oil from the crankcase and continue running. He'd seen it happen before. Shutting off the air supply is still the best means, but do it quickly then get the heck away in case the engine is already at the point of breaking.

😄 I had a runaway once. The oil extractor hadn´t done it´s job, I put 7 liters of oil in, hence there was 14 liters of oil in instead of 7. On the highway the car behaved strangely on throttle input. I pulled over at a gas station and all hell broke lose. Luckely it was a manual. Put her in 3rd gear and stalled the engine right away. Drained the oil, put fresh in, she´s running perfectly for over 15 years since. AND my muffler never rusted 😂 Funny to see people doing all kinds of useless things, especially in the last clip. They don´t have a clue what´s happening 😄
