Coming from a Boston fan, I wouldn’t be too concerned if I were the leafs. If Mitch just buried that backhand the game would’ve been completely different. The bruins just kind of ran away with it but it could’ve gone either way if the leafs just capitalized. I would be shocked if this series ended in 5 games or less
I appreciate the class. But I think it's crazy. I think concern is valid. Heck I think the word concerned is understating the situation. This is a moment when you smash that panic button and run around in random directions.
Well said. I respect fans that can actually call a spade a spade, I agree entirely. I think Boston played a lot harder and obviously capitalized better. The one area the leafs seriously need to improve on is containing the cycle game and getting the puck out. If a heavy team starts cycling in their end, it can be minutes before a leaf player even touches the puck. Ruins all momentum and gives it to a strong team like Boston.
Such an excellent and entertaining postgame review that I subscribed before it was over. Combines passion, knowledge, humor, insight, and creativity. Oh yeah, I personally give you kudos that you didn't fill you vid with profanity, despite your coursing emotion. Truly admire that and hope you'll keep it up.
I agree with what you said: Guys need to step up in an effort. JVR, Nylander & Bozak for sure needa step up. Step up hard. JVRs big, JVR needs to be more physical, he plays so small. Nylander needs to be more explosive, cause he has it in him.
Geez the list of guys that need to stepup is half the team. I'm frankly glad Kadri is gone, he's done shit like this before, like taking a bad penalty just when we don't need one. However, Bozak was trying more than usual. I don't remember Brown even touching the puck. 4th line looked like shit. And Matthews didn't make any magic. We'll get them next game boys, someone had to win the first game.
2002 playoffs game 1. Leafs lose 5-0 at home vs the Sens. Leafs win series in 7 games. Not comparing, just saying it's only game 1 and the series is not over.
... Boston then proceeded to choke even harder in the Stanley Cup final having 2 goals scored against them in 20 seconds with under a minute and a half left in game 6.
Brown didn't have a single shot in Game 1, but he was one of the best Leafs on the ice. Without question. Noticed him everywhere on the ice, usually beating a Bruin to a loose puck.
As a bruins fan, the officiating was BAD. There was a lot of missed calls. The 1st goal was of side, the missed icing call lead to the leafs goal. Bad penalties were called, good penalties werent (except kadris)
Refs completely ruined that game. Boston wins this game either way, as they were the better team, but that was not playoff hockey officiating and it killed the flow of the game. The night before (Jets vs Wild and Kings vs Knights), you had to murder someone to get a penalty. It was take no prisoners hockey that was great to watch. There should have been 3 penalties in this game: - Leafs for too many men - Kadri for the knee on Nash - Wingels for the elbow to Marner's face (if this gets called in the first place, the bad Kadri hit never happens) The rest of the penalties were so soft I forgot playoffs had started (especially the JVR 1 handed tap). Please let the teams play and decide the games on their own. Also get rid of this quota where you need to kick at least 100 people out of face-offs for no reason every game.
Umm Steve, what are you talking about Goalie Interference on the Kuraly goal? It's not even close to GI, Kuraly batted the goal in and then had to hop over Andersen....
Should have been a 2 minute minor for elbowing but those little Knicks with elbows, that should be and are pentalies, happen every game...can't go charging after them
That should be a suspension for being a creepy dumbass. If I went to work and licked my coworker, I'd be fired and probably get a sexual assault charge and jail time. Why is the NHL different? Komarov shouldn't have to go to work and worry about whether or not some weirdo on the other team is going to lick his face.
Well you can't punch people at your job either so maybe you don't need to make a comparison to your dumb day job.....also, no one licked any faces. Are you watching the same game or just talking about you job on RU-vid to people who don't care?
Great vid again Steve!! The two biggest downers for the Leafs in this game (aside from individual mistakes ~cough Hainsey not going off when he had the chance on the penalty kill ~cough) was 1). The linesman and; 2). the general puck watching with noone playing a position or taking a man (looked like scrambled eggs). The linesman (besides missing the Marchand offside), seemed bias with the puck drops!!!!!!! Steve, speaking about Marchand taking guys off their game, this is EXACTLY what the linesman did!!! But why? Possible greased palms Mark Shewchyk?? On multiple faceoffs the Leaf players inside skate was often blocked off from being able to do a tie up and foot sweep of the puck. The linesman had his skate blocking the Leafs player. Plus, take note of the timing.....when the guys were set, as soon as the Leaf faceoff man looked as if he were about to straighten his back or look up at the linesman as if to say " gonna drop the puck or what" the linesman would THEN drop the puck. Look at how Plekanek stood up in the circle just prior to the Pastronak goal to say wtf mate.....drop the bloody puck already!! He was thrown off his game clearly. The linesman were a huge part in the game. The ref's I can't complain too much about, not perfect but at least they seem to know how to drop a friggin puck!! The second gripe is self explanatory. Shake it off guys, game 2 is now!! Get er done:)
On an offside call, it’s when the puck fully is on the BLUE line, if you back it up to when the puck is completely on the blue, Marchand is still on blue too. Onsides
Steve, ur prolly not gonna see this, but hey for anyone else willing to give this a read, here it is. So, basically, every time I watch hockey, I feel like there is a certain amount of momentum and energy that the teams are holding. The catch though is that its a zero sum game. Basically if there is 100% of energy from both teams, one of them could have 48% and the other 52%. But thats the problem. When one team starts losing their momentum, they're feeding the other team, FUELING THEM. And thats exactly what I think happened here with the leafs, they lost their energy and gave it to Boston. Next game, we needa make sure we're fueling off of em! 😊
Just watched the game through as i missed it live (living in sweden so the games start at 1 a lock at night). First of you are very right that this game was a lot closer than the score said. This is just how hockey seems to work its like some kinda woodo magic if you miss an open net chance you are just bound to get scored on after that. Toronto is gonna have to show some serious mental strength in this serious do Boston seems to know how to make the absolute most out of every little mistake that's given to them. Now to something else in this game do...the Kadri thing its also up on sportsnet now btw if anyone needs a refresher. This so clearly shows the difference in respect and honor between these 2 players. Wingels is coming in with speed and sees that Marner is out of the play already and tries to break as much as he can and turn the hit away, does not fully succeed so there is a slight touch to Marners face(sure that can be called elbowing maybe). But because of those actions by Wingels Marner is not hurt and there is 0 danger to the play. Kadri just goes full speed full jump does not care that at all that Wingels is out of the play. 0 respect 0 honor and 0 care for other players safety. If Wingels does not turn his head in the last millisec so that most of that hit misses its lights out and no more season for him. Its from that context IMO there should be no more 1st round for Kadri. Also while on the topic of suspensions there should be some sort of penalty for that licking stuff that's just F'ed up tbh.
I find this three years later and laugh because Plekanec was part of the 2010 Habs team who pulled off the upsets against Washington and Pittsburgh. Plekanec was one of the best defensive forwards during his time.
If he gets one he would be INCREDIBLY lucky. Repeat offender , throws himself at the head on a guy that is valnerable, Wingle not on the ice today. If it was one...it would be out already no? I would also say he would drop from incredibly lucky to lucky if it was two. I'm guessing three
Whimsical yet sincere, I enjoyed hearing your analysis of the game and completely agree with your assessment. Kadri SHOULD know better, and that should be something Babs should bring up and USE as a catalyst to get our shiz together moving forward. It'll be a tough win for the boys in blue Saturday but the wound is fresh and frankly, Leafs have a great story when they hoist the The Stanley. Also, who the Frank is Stanley anyway?
You have about 2 or 3 min to find the right replay, and according to the coach they didn't see that replay until the puck dropped. That photo didn't show up until quite a while after the decision to challenge had passed. So, you don't see Marchand because you are focused on Bergeron (nothing on that interference of the penalty killer eh?) and how many angles do you get to see? The guys in the trucks can comb over numerous angles, blow them up, slow them right down, and they have a ton of time! And, if the coach is wrong, then it is a goal AND ANOTHER PP. They wanted to stop unnecessary offside challenges, bravo, worked on that one.
Like Steve said and as much as I love Matthews and Nylander together, I think it's best to split the 2 up on the road and put them together at home. My ideal line-up for Game 2 would look something like: Hyman-Matthews-Kapanen Marleau-Nylander-Marner JVR-Bozak-Brown Komarov-Plekanec/Moore-Johnsson To me this is pretty much a pick your poison kind of situation for the Bs. Do you choose to match the Bergeron line against a speedy, skilled 1st line or a speedy, creative 2nd line? People say the Leafs need Martin in the lineup to add physicality but from what I saw, the Leafs actually did a decent job physically. What they need to do is stay disciplined and be better on special teams. Either way, I don't see this team playing as bad as they did in Game 2. I'm still in! Go Leafs Go!
Everyone who has played, or plays, hockey knows this fact... when refs blow calls you lose your mind. NOTHING makes you lose it like a ref missing bad calls.
I loved Naz sticking up for Marner there... it's too bad Wingels fell and that turned into a horrific hit. Naz is probably suspended for game 2 and probably should be. Did anyone else see Miller come in and get all tough guy with Mitch after Naz threw that hit? What a tool.
Rough game, we didn't even show up for Period one, lucky we walked away 1-1 from that. 2nd period we looked good, but we just didn't finish on our chances and we had quite a few. 3rd was.... yeah just stinky. Bruins were just really strong on the defense, we couldn't get any zone time for a lot of the game, stupid penalties didn't help us either. Hopefully we have a better start for game 2. Go Leafs Go!
Well I was going over Wingels hit on 16 was going to be a penalty but then Kardi's hit on Wingels took away the Leafs power play and what would you pick a minor penalty which would probably be either 2 or 5 minutes whatever it would be for elbowing or a hit that would be a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct?
Steve, Marchand is NOT allowed to do anything. He was under a microscope all year and he was allowed to be interfered with by everyone all year and when he wanted to stop it, he was afraid of being called for something. Also, Kuraly was battling with a Leaf on his way to the net. I think the argument could've been that he was tied up and couldn't hold up enough to avoid contact with Freddy.
I dont know if this comment is too late and wont be seen by you. But ive been brewing about that Kadri hit. Im not going to go as far as to say that kadri shouldnt have been penalized, but i dont understand why a guy flies in and finishes a check that has already been finished (by Chara), and then turns and immediately forgets that hockey is played on a slippery surface, and falls to his knees. If he stays upright, there is nothing wrong with that hit.
Steve, I was going through what happened on Thursday when Toronto was playing Boston in a the hockey playoffs in the Atlantic Division and the first game of the series. The problem was that the Leafs sent to clear out the players to set up for a goals, so they had two players from Boston the Mutt and Jeff characters or the big guy and the little guy?The big guy a 41yr old 6' 9" 250 lbs player and he used the little as line mate to take out the Leaf player. Facts games played 41 year old player regular season 1423. PIM 1839 in 1423 games. Toronto player 28yr old GP 488. PIM 346 6'0 192 lbs. Remember this is the first step and the process is what a kangaroo court because times are changing? Think about the rules of baseball? People don't angry? Think about it? I could say more but it a perfectly reasonable way to do it.
I encourage people to look at the different angles of the Kadri hit. Slow it down, his hip doesn't really make contact with his head. It was more of his butt cheek. Still really pissed at the zebras for not calling the elbow to Marner's head.
The refs were letting a lot of dirty stuff go. A lot of the penalties they called with stupid but I think they got to protect the top players from this sort of thing. They must have seen it and frankly I'm glad Marner's ok cause he's a tough kid is all.
100% should have been an elbow but they got the Kadri call right and he will also sit a game. Both teams had penalties go uncalled. It's the playoffs. It happens, from game one, there isn't a team getting better calls than the other and that's all you can ask for out of the refs
Naz screwed up, but I can't blame him. He got smoked face first into the boards in a clear hit from behind (no call) then he got a boarding penalty for a hip to hip check where the player fell into the boards on their own. I can only imagine his faith in the zebras was shaken... and he was defending Mitch... #iBLeaf
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander JVR-Bozak-Brown Marleau-Plekanec-Marner Martin-Komarov-Kapanen Rielly-Zaitsev Gardiner-Polak Hainsey-Carrick I feel these might be a little better
Ik you think wingels definitely should’ve been called for that penalty but from my experience if refs are considering making a call and then a retaliation play happens, they will call just the retaliation
Can someone please tell me if there's people behind the main circle and maple leaf square? Ik in 2013 there was tons behind the main circle, does this still happen??
Also Steve, I respect you but Kadri getting 2 games would be the best case scenario. A player is vulnerable, Kadri sees it, Kadri has enough time to avoid contact, the puck was also played away so the puck was no where in site when the hit happens, and to top it all off it sure did look like kadri tracked his head as he moved it away to make it the principal point of contact. he could get 4, but 2 would be the minimum if you ask me.
To be honest I was much more concerned with the fact that the bruins looked faster than the leafs. If the leafs have any chance at winning it’s going to be with speed, but they were very passive in this one
I've always thought a Game Misconduct penalty should be as it is except that the match penalty should extend into the next game for a total of sixty full minutes of play: the penalized player should have to sit on the bench from the start of the next game until the time of the infraction, at which point he may be allowed to return to play...at the coach's discretion, of course. Only after that can any team/league penalties be served.
