@@simulation8083 I have no complaints with the sound, it’s punchy, full of bass and the spatial sound is good if you like that sort of thing. You can get soundbars that are ultra slim but regular ones won’t fit. There’s only about an inch between the screen and the bottom of the stand.
Hey guys, just wanted to point out a couple of differences for the 77" versions. I have tested both and the color temp in those sizes is warmer than the smaller sizes (around 6800K instead of around 7000K) and also the 77s all appear to have the newer 3S4C panel instead of being mixed with the older 3S3C panel in the smaller sizes. Great content again 👍
@@ClassyTechCalibrations I have a 2017, 65 inch LG tv and there is a black bar on the lower part of the tv screen...Is this a big issue with LG? fixable?
Awesome review. You should check out the new firmware update on the A80J. I just went through this decision and now Sony has released the VRR firmware upgrade for the A80J and a90j models. I'm so glad I got the A80J. It is incredible for gaming and allows digital passthrough which the LG does not. Both are amazing TV's that is for sure.
While we haven’t released updated videos, we retested these TVs for our written review and our results are available on our website if you want to check it out!
@@RTINGSdotcom thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer this. I purchased mine at Costco and the Model is actually A80CJ. What do you all know the difference between the 2 or is it just C for Costco? It does have a switch to turn off the microphone, came with 10 Bravia movies and has an extra 2 year warranty. Do you know if the A80CJ is different than the normal A80J? Thank you.
Great comparison video!!! Upgrading from my Sony 2015 50" W800C and Pre Ordered my 65" Sony A80J in Australia yesterday. I was tossing up between these two models for so long. Watching reviews non stop over the last few weeks. Went with the A80J as its mainly being used for movies and I've already spent $2000 on a Bose sound bar system and with the adjustable legs on the A80J to accommodate the sound bar should fit perfectly under. Cant wait to get it now especially after watching this review just made me feel so much more confident with my decision.
Thanks for the reviews guys. Good choice, noooice. I'm in the same boat in Aus and having watched numerous reviews, read forums i will also be grabbing the A80J "65 but will likely wait to around Black Friday. Was hoping to get the 77" but at 10k 😳 and double the 65" the pricing is a bit of a joke.Edit- Ordered the 77" this week as got it for under 6k. Really looking forward to my first OLED.
This is right! The point is that each company targets different aspects of a TV like Samsung oversaturates everything, Sony has better color balance etc
@@TechTails The only volumes it speaks are probably the differences between Japan and Korea. I think labor costs are less in South Korea so they can afford to do more R and D.
Yes, Sony started working on OLEDs before LG. However, Sony gave up mid-way. LG succeeded in commercializing OLED panels, and now Sony, along with almost every other TV maker, buys from them. However, I hear Samsung's Quantum Dot OLED is the new king in town.
Ended up going with the Sony because of the Google TV OS. It allows me to enable Developer Mode and Side Load Apps to TV. Picture Quality for Movies and TV Sows is excellent. Gaming feature are important for my PS5 Console and with latest update it automatically sets up the correct Setting to take full advantage of Console. Never Plan to connect a PC so that feature is a waste.
How’s it doing with the PS5? Any stuttering or anything? I’m looking into the C1,G1 or Sony XR A80J primary for gaming. Did you ever get any update to Improve the latency and vrr? Any improvements there?
@@yera1239 just so you know I ended up buying a G1. I’m 4 months in my screen has a vertical black line. It is being covered under warranty and the local repair center is coming out when it arrives to help me swap it out. I’ve since read a lot of complaints about verticals and horizontal lines. Sadly I’d say steer clear. Sony from my understanding uses LG’s displays so idk if it’s any better.
@@whatfreedom7 I also heard about banding on LG OLEDs, but I haven’t seen on my long research of which manufacturer to go with, haven’t seen that on Sony OLEDs.
The Google TV is my main reason to go for the Sony. I have Google TV now via a dongle on my 11 years old TV, and I really like it. So, having it built-in for the Sony is a major plus for me.
When comparing two TV models, could it be possible to add a few seconds of real HDR movie clip or Game play? So that all the technical specifications makes sense. For example in this video, Sony doesn't support VRR and LG does, adding a comparison video to show how they matter would be really great in your video.
That's because vrr doesn't make a noticeable difference. That's why it isn't that big of a deal right now. The SONYs play the games very smoothly and you will not notice any difference from playing on the lg. I've gamed on both and both felt the same. While the sonys had a lil more detail and better contrast
@Radical Thunder may I see that depth review? Because before I purchased my Sony a9g I got the cx and compared the cx to the A9g side by side for days. The A9g was wayy better in many ways . ESPECIALLY contrast and depth. The SONYs give you a 3d effect that's hard to explain but you have to see in person. I'm not speaking out of my ass like some people. I actually did my research and actually did a comparison in person. And not only that I watch Evey single video on the c1 and A80j and every single video agreed that the Sony had more depth , better contrast, more detail , better upscaling, better sound. Literally the ONLY people that think the LGs are better are the people who made the mistake of getting an Lg OLED over the Sony OLED. And they really want to convince themselves they have the better tv. When In fact there's plenty of proof that shows that the SONYs are definitely better .
@Radical Thunder dude I just said I saw countless of videos of these tvs and no one says what you're saying. But everyone says the c1 is only slightly better than the cx. And the A9g was way better than the cx. And the A80j is slightly better than the A9g. So makes sense when you put my testing with the testing of everyone else on RU-vid that the SONYs have the better picture. I'm not just speaking just to speak. I actually know . Unlike someone who is literally just trying to defend his tv like if he made it himself lol . I'm talking from facts here not from emotions like you
@Radical Thunder congratulations to all you people who got an Lg OLED. They're great tvs . I NEVER said they weren't . All I'm saying is they're second best
That's a great question! Right now, the discrepancy comes from the implementation of HDMI 2.1 and how we weigh those features to get the scores you see in the review. If you hover over the ? Next to the scores in the review, you can see all of the factors that contribute to each score. www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/sony-a80j-oled-vs-lg-c1-oled/21563/21421?usage=10&threshold=0.01 We are considering changes to these weights for the next methodology update, so if you have any suggestions for us, please let us know! Basically though, there are differences here that go beyond our scores, so we wanted to make sure to mention them! And rest assured, we're aware of this issue as well and we're working to improve it!
I actually bought the 77 Sony… 2.5weeks later it stopped working and would only flash a red LED 4x below the screen. We called their tech support and they told us that it was toast, and needed to be exchanged for a new unit! The process was supposed to be that we’d get a call from a Sony Concierge within 48 hrs to schedule the replacement delivery. However, 48 hrs later we still had received no call, so we called Sony again. We were told we just needed to be patient and wait for the call!!! I asked how long the replacement process would take after the Concierge contacted us…? We were told it would add on another 10-14 days at least. With that response, we packed up the Sony and returned it to the store and replaced it with the 77in OLED LG!!! With a huge crowd coming to our house for a Thanksgiving, there was no way we were going to be able to wait for Sony to get back to us. Good thing we chose not to wait… Sony NEVER called us back!!!
Had something similar albeit an older TV. I had a Sony 55 A1E, which I bought three years ago. It had been a bit problematic (would reboot at times when turning on via an HDMI input such as the PS5) but nothing major. Yesterday morning turned it on and nothing, dead TV. Was considering the A80J but think I'll steer clear of Sony for a while as reliability isn't a great trade off for marginally better picture quality.
I've gone with the A80J the 77" I love it along with my soundbar and Subwoofer makes for a great experience when you put on something like the Star War series.
Sony has more image retention, no HGIG, higher input lag, 2 hdmi 2.1 instead of 4 like the C1, no gsync-freesync, mat screen, etc. I prefer the remote of the LG but Android software from the Sony.. They all have their issue.
Comparing a80j with C1 Have a ps5 play mainly soccer and God of war etc, and watch lots of sports on my Apple TV … any advice which is better for my need ?
Generally speaking, we suggest the C1 because the performance is so similar and the C1 is cheaper. If you prefer the processing of the Sony TVs and price isn't a factor, the A80J was just updated to support VRR so it's more comparable for gaming than it was before!
So true. The A80j hdmi ports that are not 2.1 is a deal breaker for me. Almost like buying a nice 2022 exotic car but it still have drum brake for the rear wheels.
Thanks for this very helpful video! Subscribed. I was torn between these two but even though I'm a Sony fan two weeks ago I went with my first LG anything, the OLED65C1PUB because of the better gaming performance. Our grandson has a new PS5 so I expect we'll soon try it out on the LG. This replaces our beloved 1080p plasma with a power supply that gave up its magic smoke. 😞 So far I'm astounded by OLED!
@@lukescott7500 said who 🤦🏻♂️ I have been gaming on a 50 inch TV for the past ten years. It’s not that much big of a deal unless you are a professional gamer…
I bought the A80J 77 inch over the C1. I do game quite a bit, but so far I am really happy. I came from an LG c8 and I really like the Sonys picture processing more. More natural and unbelievably clear. An extremely clean panel. So far my only downside is only 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, but I only have the PS5. Anyone on the fence between the 2, I still say the Sony, especially in the 77 inch for 1k off.
Congratz! no doubt the difference from a LG C Series Oled to a Sony XR OLED panel is like Night to Day. Only LG sponsored Rtings and clowns like QuantumTV can't admit it.
@@ManuelMedellin. only clown here is you. I see you fanboying Sony everywhere I look. It's impossible for you to give an objective analysis because you're biased.
If you play on the switch the only answer here is a80j. Superior SDR brightness as “peak brightness” isn’t disabled in game mode, and upscaling is MUCH better for lower resolution content making it look like native 4k. And for ps5 well it doesn’t support VRR as well so it’s also an excellent option for that.
Thanks, this actually helped me a lot. I game on switch and SDR up scaling quality means a lot. I also have a PS4, so eventually I would be upgrading to a PS5. Maybe VRR will come to both in the future
They're both strong. I'd go for the C1 because I can always pay a calibrator to adjust colors, what balance, shadow details. I can't go back later and get more hdmi 2.1 or gaming features on Sony.
If you’re not gaming on PC the 4K 120hz isn’t a big deal. Consoles are rarely, if ever going to utilize 4K/120hz. They would have to sacrifice way too much visual fidelity to reach 120hz at 4K.
@Radical Thunder That's cool if you're willing to play on low settings to achieve 120Hz. By the time 120Hz is the standard (on consoles obvioisly) I'll be ready to buy another TV.
@Radical Thunder I'd be more concerned with the LG's inability to adjust peak brightness while in Game Mode. Something that the Sony's let you do. Only a big deal if you have a Switch or you play a lot of retro games.
@Radical Thunder I agree that the picture quality is similar. But that is after you pay somebody $300-$400 to calibrate the LG. Out of the box the Sony is a noticeable better picture. You can go to a big box store and see that for yourself. Most people aren't going to pay for a professional calibration.
I went with LG C1. Only having 2 HDMI 2.1 ports is a crucial flaw in the Sony. Plus, LG has less in lag and more resistant to reflections, and VRR for all HDMI ports. Still like the Sony, but better color calibration at twice the cost doesn't outweigh its cons.
@@sergioortiz8219 Sony pretty much charge big money for the accuracy on there TVs They come calibrated already that’s why colors are so true life like perfect. Out of the box.
TKS! Your review of them helped me make the decision to just keep my LG C9 which is 2 years old and still works like new & has DTS Audio enabled still!
Dear I really need your advice, which TV I should get for my Playstation 5 between these two options: 1. Samsung Q70T 2. Sony X9000H (No VRR) thanks in advance
Sony! Matt Pipke Sony doesn't need ALLM since it already detects and switches to Game Mode automatically (has for years). VRR is almost irrelevant with next gen consoles since majority of games are targeting 60fps and so far have been rocksolid steady. The next gen consoles struggle with 120 modes and are pretty crappy anyway (reduced textures, resolution, poor HDR etc).

A80J for me. I do not game. I like the 46 Mps 2.1 ports, and the ATSC 3.0 TV receiver on the Sony. So Sony for sound and color and image quality. (Plus the low placed mounting screws on the back for my TV stand mast mounting works well too.)
C1 seems to be more versatile, but a80j better picture (color, details and depth) according to other reviews. Tough call and all seem to have compromises.
Back in the days, I'd have gone with the LG. But now I'm a PC gamer so Sony is the easiest choice, having DTS is a plus too. But yeah, tough call if you still gaming on TV, I'd say if you game more than half of the time then go with the LG.
@@SteveL11 you're implying that you'd go Sony as you don't use your tv for gaming while on pc I take it, because lg is great for pc gaming. But you're right I'm leaning towards lg for Xbox gaming, even though i know Sony has a slightly better picture. Still waiting for u9dg reviews before pulling trigger though.
@@obidean3964 Sorry, I could've worded it better. I no longer use TVs for gaming, so the LG features are useless to me. Got a Samsung 49-inch Odyssey G9 Ultrawide monitor for PC Gaming. Sony 77'' at the time was also $300 cheaper (They're both at $3500 now). But yeah, I'd still recommend LG C1 for gamers if you gaming more than 50% usage.
Hi on the contrast test, the blacks are darker for the LG C1, the Sony they have a grayish tinge. You would have to be crazy not to notice the difference it is so bleeding obvious.
Hi I don’t game and watch sports / movies and don’t want to deal with picture calibration. The 55” LG C1 is $400 cheaper than the 55” Sony A80J right now. What would you recommend?
If the price difference isn't a deal breaker for you and you don't game, the A80J might be the way to go! The biggest difference was with the bad out of the box color accuracy of the C1, but this could be because the unit we bought is faulty.
To remove judder from external 60p/60i sources, like a cable box, or from native apps, set Motionflow to 'Custom' but leave the sliders at '0', and set Cinemotion to 'High'.
For me this is the A80J! I am not a gamer... I will use it for series and movies. DTS support is important for me and I want to be able to put my central speaker in front of the TV.
@@matthewowen1360 Yes, the real question now comes in is : What's the best choice for a movie/series lover (Not a gamer) ? Is the picture/video/sound quality difference b/w these two is significant to spend $400 extra or these are un-noticeable or can be ignored and not worth to spend $400 extra? Any idea guys?
From other reviews it seems most are saying Sony A80J not only has better color accuracy out of the box it also renders better details on extreme whites and shadows and it also renders slightly sharper image. Do you guys agree with it? In that case shouldn't it be said that sony has overall better picture quality (not color accuracy)?
@@tdvols - I just got a Sony 77 yesterday. We watched them side by side in the store. My teen son liked LG better. It was clear that LG was more saturated. Any image if you over saturate it pops out more and looks pleasing. Its just like sugar, human brain is more attracted to it. But too much sugar is not a good thing in general. We were watching Avatar HD to test out upscaling. It seemed on a 5 second inspection the sony looked a tad bit sharper. I could be biased because I went with Sony in mind. But I checked at least 5 professional reviews and all of them said on picture Sony has an edge. Since I don't care for gaming - I paid extra and got the Sony. In reality there is a good chance that they are both equally good and one can be made to look like other in the custom settings. Also LG being the panel manufacturer perhaps they keep the good ones for them. Who knows.
@@jeetray11 if you have to watch reviews to tell which tv has a better picture then it is pretty obvious they’re neck and neck. @@BIGGIEBAG-XL please read my comments again - I didn't say anywhere Sony is a better TV. I said based on reviews and my personal store observation (which is not very methodical) that Sony is perhaps better for movie watching. And I also left some grain of salt (doubt) in that conclusion. That you bringing up Xbox in the discussion tells me you didn't process my comments clearly. LG could be a better ovall tv and LG according to reviews is surely a better gaming TV. Thanks.
Great vedio . I am in dilemma to choose between Sony A80J 77" ( 2021) which I am getting after cashback offer 2499 euro in Europe . But store is advising me to go for Sony Master series KD 77AG9 that costs 2699 euro. Store says AG9 is 2019 model but way better in black handling and picture quality than 2021 A80J model. What is your advice. Which model should I go for .
We actually give the slight edge to the A80J in this case. It has a higher peak brightness and a different processor than the A9G from last year. www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/sony-a9g-oled-vs-sony-a80j-oled/833/21563?usage=1&threshold=0.10
I dont like the Black Crush on the C1, yes you can fix that by turning on other features like Adaptive Contrast but that makes the whole image a bit whased out and also lost of detail.
Nitpicking the screen and color palette aren't a great compactor considering the screens are both made by LG Displays. Personally, the biggest difference between the two is how the speakers are done. Sony uses speakers that shoot through the screen, while LG uses traditional back speakers that need to be close to a wall to sound good. In surround sound, the screen speakers in the A80J can count as a "center" speaker for the setup, while the C1 speakers can't.
No. As I have a good sound system I don't mind about integrated speakers, and I really hate light reflections, LG is also more open on software, an easy to use remote control where for gamers a VRR is quite important. For me LG wins.
I've seen numerous reports of some A80Js having a blinking red power light and not powering on as a result. That's very concerning. Not sure if all sizes are prone to this or just a certain size.
Glad I went with the 77 inch LG C1. I love movies and gaming but having 4 2.1 HDMI ports is a must in this day in age. I have a PS5 and a XBox Series X and Sonos sound system. Let me tell you this tv makes all of them things amazing. Do yourself a favor and get a C1 and not look back!!
wow that is funny I have the excalt same set up as you. and it is absolutely amazing im playing Rachet and clank rift apart 😍wow it looks soo good on the 77 c1.
They are both great TVs me personally for my setup I would have to get the Sony cause the LG sits to low and my sound bar would block the screen plus the sony be used for movies mostly and my sound bar and 4K blu ray player are Sony so it all match and work together
After having had the choice of both i went with the 77a80j. (I bought both to compare and took back the lg within the return window) . The a80j just looked better, with more depth, texture, highlights came off the screen, better color shading and oh man that “living backdrop” just looks so awesome. I don’t use the built in sound but my wife does and she loves it for watching regular reality tv shows, she also said that it looks sharper in upscaling. I have to say you have to go look in person if you are on the fence. These are more different in real life than they are on video. Also when i checked out the g1 it barely made a difference in real life. I’d suggest *only* if you want the proprietary wall mount to buy the g1. Otherwise go for the a80j
I went in with the intent on buying the C1 but like you said, the picture quality on the A80J was noticeably better. That and I don’t buy the new consoles doing 4K 120hz so 2 HDMI 2.1 ports were fine with me.
I'd get the a80j because of the better imaging processor and Android TV. But I'm not a hardcore gamer. If you are the lg is probably the better choice.
Did anyone notice the wallpaper on Sony seems a bit cropped compared to LG ? You can see more of white light lamp post and more of letter t and so on...
currently have the sony a80j but hate how SDR, HDR, & DV all copy picture setting changes to each other which makes me have to keep changing settings depending on what I watch. Does sony have a way to turn this off? My old Vizio was better in this way.
6:26 about Pre-Calibration (the only thing that lacks on the LG vs the Sony), so if I get the C1 I need hire a professional calibrator? or I can do it myself just with dealing with settings? and with no extra hardware tools?
You can likely improve the picture by playing around with the settings, but to achieve a level of calibration similar to the "post-calibration" color accuracy from our review, then you'd likely need to get the equipment or a professional calibrator. But again, you can likely make it good enough for you by just playing around with the settings!
Rtings :-) can you compare 2017 sony a1e oled vs new 2021 or 2020 i want to see how this 2017 sony oled stuck with the new model in image quality and sound :-)
Hey Matt, Yes we calibrate all of our TVs during our testing process. You're right though, before we calibrated it, it had pretty bad color accuracy. This should be reflected in our full review on our website as well!
hi , my sony a850 j keeps dimming the picture brightness when it is on the standards , i played around with the activating all the features , still dims
Hello! I returned a LG C1 after 6 days and I'm thinking to buy the A80J. Since I am not a gamer, I couldn't go over te LG issues with streaming aps(Hbo Max gets stuck), missing DTS support and even DD+ issues for some movies. The menu and smart features are pretty slow and sometimes with a poor logic behind. The magic remote... It will anoy you if you were using MR1 and 2 before( MR hes become a normal remote with scroll and pointer, for which you need a flash light to use it during low light scenes/ hours and also some key buttons positions were interchanged). Cable management... Why would you design a 6 cm frame if the cable, HDMI, USB and optical cables are forcing you to let at least 3cm between TV and wall? The sound was fine connected to a Denon x2700h, but still I had some issues with eARC, confirmed by LG support. Based on all above it highly depends how you use it, in my case it was a dissapointment thinking that I own only LG TVs in the last 12 years...
Im going for the 55" LG C1 OLED this Christmas. I really like the color accuracy and upscaling low definition content of the Sony XR processors though.
I love this!! I love electronics comparisons. It's like everything else in life. It's all subjective. The simple fact of the matter is this. Whichever one you choose, as long as when it's up and running, and it puts the biggest smile on your face, you've chosen correctly. It matters none, what others think. They're not there in your home. And let's face it, the true king of OLED at the moment, Panasonic JZ2000. Enjoy!!
I am interested in the A80J but it seems like I would not be able to connect my PS5, Series X to 2.1 and Dolby Atmos at the same time if I wanted to use eARC. Can anyone conform?
In terms of audio, Sony is the clear winner. People really underestimate Sony's trademark Acoustic Surface ... Just go to a store and check it out for yourselves. Plus, if you plan on wallmounting the TVs, LG's CX/C1 stand was made so the sound would reflect from the subwoofers to the front, taking it off really decreases sound quality ...
One of the reason why I’m choosing the A80j Over the c1 because I’m not getting a sound bar, a sound bar would be overkill in my bedroom, I’m mad that they downgrade the sound from the A90j to the A80j= has half the performance 30W compare to 60w on the A90j.
had to justify the pricetag for the A90J somehow, not gonna lie, setting it as your Center speaker a la A90J is such a sweet Upgrade. Still they can't charge 8 grands for the Big One. Here's hoping for 2022 and see if the Flagship makes a Nose dive (due to poor sales) forcing them to significantly lower, will wrap it up once its down to 5 grands.
If you calibrate the TV, the color accuracy would be much better yes. Our unit could just have been faulty though, so yours might not be as bad without calibration as ours was.
The question I have since gaming is important to me aswell, but don’t want a Tv with bad color accuracy. Can you get the color accuracy to be as correct or nearly as correct as the sony’s or is it just doomed?
Both are perfectly fine. You would only be able to spot a difference with both screens next to eatch other. Pick a color temperature you like. Many settings change the color temperature like eye protection mode, color temp, picture mode etc.
The data we reference in this video is based on our objective testing, which you can read more about here if you'd like! www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/a80j-oled Let us know if you have any question!
Sony for me! Do you present from a script or memory? Either way, an excellent job as usual! Rtings has taught me a lot and is helping me to decide on the right tv for my next purchase. (UK)
G1 is in another class compared to the C series. However, if you want the best OLED, Samsung's QD OLED is the new king. It makes LG and Sony, which uses LG's panels, 2nd rate citizens.
@@trstnhn I haven’t seen one yet so I ended up getting a G1. I saw a QLED and it looked great and had great blacks for way less it just didn’t have the low latency inputs. I looked up the QD LED I know it’s not the same as QLED but Sony is using the Samsung QDLED panels on some TVS now. So that tells me that they must perform better than the older LG OLED panels.
@@whatfreedom7 I haven't seen the QD OLED tvs in person yet either. I just heard they are superior to LG's OLED panels and is the reason why LG and Sony OLED TVs are going down in price, because they can't compete with the new QD OLED from Samsung.
I still don’t know which to get. I would be getting the 77” for a basement theater with dim-able lights (glair shouldn’t be N issue). Main use would be watching tv, movies and sports. No video gaming.
Seems like LG should spend some time / money getting the color accuracy issue fixed. Seems like the main flaw, if addressed they would be the best choice hands down. The C1 is $300 CAN cheaper here. Wonder how difficult it is to calibrate without expensive hardware... Good review guys. Dope shirt.
we just purchased the C1 65" and it's £700 cheaper than the same size Sony alternative. The 55" model was also £500 cheaper than the Sony at the time of our purchase.
