LG CX & C9 Unlikely to Get Fix for VRR Gamma Issue Caused by OLED Panel

In a newsletter published by the OLED Association, LG Display has confirmed that the VRR gamma shift issue on LG OLED TVs including the CX and C9 is caused by the underlying OLED panel. While the company is investigating the possibility of introducing multiple gamma curves at lower refresh rates, the fix will be hardware/ T-Con-based, and can only be applied to future OLED TVs and not existing ones.
Thanks to Mr Barry Young, president & CEO of the OLED Association, for giving us permission to cite the newsletter which is originally found here:

It's likely very difficult to film the phenomenon at an accurate level. A good example is when Vincent tries to demonstrate FALD bloom. The camera always exaggerates the effect. I suspect if he attempted to film the gamma shift, it would greatly exaggerate it. The human eye is a lot more forgiving than a CMOS/CCD chip.

Every single TV released this year seems to have issues of some sort with HDMI 2.1 based features... Samsung have needed to release multiple firmware updates to address problems and even now their implementation has problems . Sony's 120hz firmware came with a slight reduction in resolution and still no VRR until later LG has these Gamma issues. Buying a 2020 TV is basically beta testing at this point.

I have an official response from LG Thank you for your email. I hope you are keeping well. I have taken a look into this for you and this is not a fault with the TV itself, HDMI 2.1 has enabled many new technologies and LG has been leading the adoption of features and benefits brought by this new standard. As with any new technology, especially involving interoperability with different devices, there have been teething issues related to HDMI 2.1 and gaming. LG has already rapidly released updates to 2019 and 2020 models around the world addressing the majority of issues found by PC and console gamers. We remain committed to work on mitigating the remaining known issues and would like to clarify where we stand on that progress. For issues with any dropped frames and black screen issues with VRR, a firmware update was issued in mid-October which fixed this issue. Please check to ensure the s/w version being used is 03.11.25 (CX, GX) or 03.11.20 (BX) and 05.00.03 (C9, E9) or 05.00.02 (B9) For any stuttering issues, LG is also working on a firmware update to address the cases of stutter which can occur at certain resolutions with VRR on LG OLED TVs. This firmware is currently in development and estimated to be released by the end of the year. This update will allow both PC and Console gamers to have smooth VRR playback at all available resolutions and frame rates. For raised black and flickering, there have been some reports of raised shadow detail in certain usage cases when using VRR with LG OLED TVs which would result in these shadow regions appearing brighter than when VRR is off. However, this does not typically affect game play because the effect is most prominent at low frame rates and when the frame rate varies rapidly between low and high. This characteristic is not unique to OLED TVs and similar issues can occur with LCD TVs. They may look more visible on an OLED than they do on an LCD panel because of OLED’s deeper black. We are investigating software solutions to mitigate this issue. I hope this helps reassure you that all issues are being looked into and being solved as quickly as possible. However, if you are wanting to get a refund, you will need to contact the retailer you purchased the TV from as LG is just the retailer so cannot provide this for you, only the retailer you purchased the TV from can do this. Let us know if you have any further questions.

I'm definitely waiting for the 2021 models. The 2020's are just not fully optimized for the new consoles and the new round of GPU's for PC. The 2020's are really good, but i.m.o. not worth buying now when you KNOW they will be much better for next gen gaming hardware next year. 2021 CES is coming soon so we should know what LG is doing in January. You can bet they will fix these issues. I'm setting up a new gaming rig and have been eyeing these TVs because they have gsync. I bet the 2021's will be significantly superior with updated hardware/panels and better software. I think the 20s are kind of the first beta round of TVs that double as legit gaming monitors at 120hz. They will be improved for 21 no doubt. Look for new panel design to mitigate the gamma issue and higher refresh rates to match the new GPU's. Definitely NOT the time to buy a 2020 right now when 2021 CES is right around the corner. Caveat Emptor on buying a 2020 LG! Thank you for making this video. This is the kind of no nonsense, straight to the meat, video that is so lacking these days on youtube. You know, my gut reaction was to be upset with LG. But i'm actually holding Nvidia responsible for this one. G-Sync is a brand and it is supposed to mean that Nvidia " validates that the monitor does not show blanking, pulsing, flickering, ghosting or other artifacts during VRR gaming. They also validate that the monitor can operate in VRR at any game frame rate by supporting a VRR range of at least 2.4:1 (e.g. 60Hz-144Hz), and offer the gamer a seamless experience by enabling VRR by default." That is a direct quote from Nvidia. If they're allowing LG to slap their logo right on the box, they should have tested this display for these issues.
@yoitsmegabe
@yoitsmegabe 3 года назад
@T Boogie www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/g-sync-ces-2019-announcements/ According to their website you are wrong. Gsync compatible means Nvidia validated the display. To clarify, when I say I blame Nvidia I mean either they should have truly tested and validated the display to be flicker free and without artifacts, or they should have rejected it and the logo should not be on the box. If they're going to put their stamp on it they should make sure it works out of the box as they have stated on their own website.
@yoitsmegabe
@yoitsmegabe 3 года назад
@T Boogie The quote I posted is directly from Nvidia stating that the g sync compatible monitors are validated. Further down, the chart shows that at bare minimum it shouldn't have the flickering issues being described in this video. They go on to say "We will test monitors that deliver a baseline VRR experience" that is a direct reference to g-sync compatible, not certified. G-sync compatible means that Nvidia tested it. They even say that g-sync may work on other monitors but unless they pass validation they won't get on the g-sync compatible list. In the article/website introducing their partnership with LG they mentioned that g-sync may work with other tvs but they had not validated any other tv than the LG oleds at that point. "If you don’t own a LG TV, but do own a display or TV that only supports Variable Refresh Rates via HDMI, you can try enabling HDMI VRR by installing the new Game Ready Driver, and enabling G-SYNC as detailed above. As these displays and TVs have yet to through our comprehensive validation process, we can’t guarantee VRR will work, or work without issue." In case you want to read it for yourself. www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/g-sync-compatible-2019-lg-tv-available-now/

The only bright side is this, the new consoles are highly unlikely to actually game at full 4K and 120hz. If the new next gen games already struggle to run at 4k 60fps (Miles Morales does 1700p 60fps), there is no way games will have both 4K and 120Hz for graphically demanding games. The BAD news, is that if they do use upscaling techniques in the future to get upscaled 4K at 120hz, it will suck. Again, i believe most games will do 120hz at 1080p, or max 1440p for DEMANDING games.

Gamers can avoid this issue by optimizing their in game settings and capping their fps to avoid any fluctuations. This is pretty standard procedure as variable fps is mostly undesirable even with G-Sync. If you have a 3080 for example, you should be able to set most games at high or ultra and cap the fps at 90. I have a CX. I'll say I'm disappointed but it's not an "I'll never trust LG ever again" sort of deal breaker. I might just rely on old fashioned V-sync or turn it all off entirely if I can run the game "fast enough". Tearing at 110 fps is way less noticeable than at like 35 for instance. Still can't find a damn GPU in stock. Also, as more of a computer monitor guy than TV guy, the monitor industry is still struggling with combining dynamic overdrive values with VRR. Asus being the only company currently offering a solution, and the solution doesn't work that well. If someone needs an easier explanation of the issue: These OLED panels support adaptive refresh rate (freesync) BUT they do not support adaptive overdrive (something that native gsync modules in a gaming monitor can only do). Since it’s an OLED panel - with infinite contrast ratio and near instant response times - overshooting of pixels when playing a game where the frame rate fluctuates a lot is particularly noticeable and distracting, versus a traditional freesync LCD monitor I personally don’t think it’s a deal breaker. Freesync is a last resort feature for games with bad performance. As long as your frame rate is steady or capped, OLED is still worth the image quality versus LCD

*If anyone here is concerned that this problem will be very noticeable in daily gaming, you can sit back and relax.* I'm playing since 1 year with VRR on my C9 with my PC. You can see flickering mainly in loading screens only, where the frametimes go all over the place due to the loading action in the background. FPS which fluctuating are not the problem, it's bad frametimes, in particular frametimes which are *constantly* bad. There is in fact only one game i can force the flickering in dark scenes, which is Star wars fallen order. When i dial down the settings to medium, even at 4K, there are somehow very bad frametimes constantly with my Ryzen 3900X+RTX3080. In this scenario there is constant flickering in dark scenes. Dialing settings back to high, the flickering is gone. In every other game i have played, i can't see any *ingame* flickering at all in near black scenes. The gamma shift is an issue i can't reproduce on my PC. I tested back and forth, with an without VRR, i can't spot any difference at all in near black scenes.

Definitely see what's coming down the pipe. I wouldn't be surprised if the C11 had this same VRR problem though as to fix it they would need a full dynamic overdrive system that can account for VRR frametimes. The only company in the world that has such a feature is ASUS on their PC monitors, but it doesn't work that good yet. I feel like LG just now really learning of this problem will make it hard for them to fix in time (if they even care). The funny thing is it will be a problem on all TVs without this dynamic compensation for their overdrive settings but it will likely be less noticeable on more traditional LCD tech (TN/IPS/VA) than it will on OLED. If Sony can get out a banger that actually has full resolution images I might pick one up next year then move my OLED into the basement and use it just as an exceptional dark room movie screen.

What would really be great is when you do videos talking about issues or anything really, to show exactly what it is that is the problem. I have no idea how this even looks but it's about gamma when we're talking near black. So how would this realyl affect anyones experience? Dark scenes are suddenly not as dark when using VRR? Or the other way around? Is it another one of those "You can't even notice it but complain anyway cause it doesn't check all the boxes"? It's hard to know the extent of this. I know you Vincent are a respectable and knowledgeable person and I basically watch only your info regarding screens (a bit of rtings.com readup as well to refresh ones memory on stuff). The problem is that this taken out of context is basically "There's an issue and LG won't fix it, don't buy their TV!"-level of arguing for other people to use when they want someone to not buy something. Just like the "The XBOX gets really hot!" craze. Yes it does, at the VENT. That's how it's suposed to work, yet people clickbait it a lot. Again, I know this isn't your intent, to clickbait, but it can sadly be used as such unless the issue is also shown (and depending on how serious the issue is, that's how seriously this problem should weigh in on a purchase decision). Love your videos but I really would appreciate examples of whatever is talked about. This goes for anything but I know some videos where you do show the issues as well. I also know youtube won't be the best place to look at it, but it gives an idea of what to expect. Just like to add for anyone wondering, I found this: www.reddit.com/r/OLED/comments/hmzggz/for_those_of_you_experiencing_gsyncvrr_nearblack/ OP shows the issue, but further down another user shows it not flickering at all. At least it's shown what can happen and what this is about.

I have posted a long post linked below regarding some testing I have done on my C9 since the new firmware which includes discussion around the flashing you can sometimes see in VRR. I have learned how to get around it with game settings tweaks and maybe why some see it and others don't. But after over a year of 120Hz VRR gaming on my C9, I've seen it a handful of times and just tweak game settings to get rid of it. I think its not always seen by everyone as the different games performance, their settings, FPS variations and frame times are integral to how bad it is. It can be more obvious in menus where the FPS is often locked much lower than in game. www.avforums.com/threads/lg-oled-c9-owners-and-discussion-thread.2227517/post-28572497

Personally I don’t know any other TV brand that releases newer functions or fixing software for older models. So my next TV surely is going to be another LG.

So... what's Samsung's excuse? Their VRR gamma issue is much worse than LG's and well... they don't use an OLED panel...

So what tv would you recommend getting. I had the LG CX as my first choice for a tv upgrade after watching your’s & other channel reviews but now with the issue arising also of it being limited to 40Gbps & 10 bit colour at 120hz 4k instead of 48Gbps & 12 bit colour. I’ve considered the Panasonic hz1000(2000 too pricey) & then Sony A8, all at 55 inch. I enjoy movies so the CX was to double up as gaming & movie tv. We’re upgrading from an old Samsung 3D 7 series so any new tv will be an improvement for movies so I was willing to choose the CX over the Panasonic & Sony. Love the dry humour by the way;)

Never buy a lg product they can't get nothing right, they don't have the engineering or knowledge, just turn the lights off and put a 5% grey slide and you'll be shocked at the uniformity on their oleds and the 77" are worse.
