Jason, I haven’t forgotten what you did! You fixed my wife’s phone and charged a SUPER reasonable price. Thank you for posting and thanks again. People. You see this man work on video and what you see is what you get. A true professional!

Hey Jason, client here! Just happen to have come across this, funny you made a video of this. I will say the board when I got it back was immaculate! And now I know why! And it worked like a charm. This is my Sons phone, so it gets lots of abuse. Thanks again!

I've been watching your videos for a while now, and have decided to take another step further into hardware tinkering. I'm getting a new soldering iron/station and my first micropencils. Thank you for indrectly pushing me to further my knowledge. (I have a background in construction, recently programming, and soon hardware. It's the trifecta!)

I have an original iPad Air that needs a new charging port. It served me 7 years and because of my disability I can spend 10 years a day on it when I’m in bed. I have a strange sentimental attachment to it, partly because I bought it out of money my late mother left me. Every so often I look at it and think "Should I?" However, I believe the glass is horrendous to get off so I think I'll take it to a professional. If I was in America or Australia I'd feel more comfortable in my choices, there again if you’re getting jobs from Sweden… When I was a student I worked a Christmas at a British sorting office. There are idiots out there who see the word 'Fragile' on a parcel as some sort of challenge. When you think of the magnification you are working at you do a phenomenal job of soldering, your control is amazing.
@ststele
@ststele 2 года назад
Hello, thank you for the compliments! The glass on iPads can be tricky to remove without breaking it for sure. I used to crack undamaged iPads all the time removing the screen and would just install a new one but over time I've learned to remove them without a scratch and then put the same screen right back on. I use heat, suction cup & paper-thin plastic tools. Removing the logic board and then the soldering job to replace the port is a whole other aspect of the repair though! Unfortunately, I don't think it would be worth it to send overseas for repair. I think the shipping alone would be close to the replacement value. Hopefully you may be able to find a solution closer! Oh, yah - "fragile" can certainly be a personal challenge to some carrier employees! :-)

Your coiled up solder wick is acting like a giant heat sink. Try cutting a piece off and your wicking will move along much quicker. The board wont take as much heat in the process.

I'm in a love and hate relationship with wicking, it is sooo satisfying to wick pads but sooner or later you will fight to death with a uber thicc ground plane. Having hot air in one hand, soldering iron in the other and praying that the wick is going to work as soon as possible without destroying the solder mask 😂

Nice video as always! I've done a few of these myself. I almost wonder if it would be better to dip the port in a "bath" of isopropyl a few times to remove any remaining flux

if you use the soldering iron direct on the metal of the charging port at high temp you can desolder it without any hot air, is safer that way,

Hi Jason! great video buddy! I wanted to mention with doing those 5V data+/- GND pins, you should try a Chisel tip! I use that tip for almost all repairs, the heat transfer to those pins makes that solder flow like nobodies business. Take care buddy!

Hello Jason. Could you help me out if you still remember, what is he diode mode reading on an iPhone 5 at the battery connector? (BAT+ to GND) I have a phone which has a constant battery current draw of around 230mA while turned off. I have disconnected every connector, but still. I measure around 80 ohms between Bat+ and GND. Btw. the phone is charging ok, starts ok, camera, wifi etc is working. ..But even with a fully charged battery, it won't stay on if I disconnect the charger. It will restart in a few seconds, and cannot start it anymore. Displays the large low battery icon in the middle, and the "plug in the charging connector" icon at the bottom. Thank you.
@ststele
@ststele 2 года назад
Hello, I don't have the exact diode mode reading handy but 80 ohms is way too low. 230mA is a significant drain though so I'm hopeful that there would be some heat to help track it down. I hope you are able to figure it out! :-)
