Your information and approach to picture setup on the LG C9 is exceptional. I did find that the defaults on any device - fresh out of the box were useless. On my C9 everything initially looked like "Video" and mostly very grainy. SDR for the cable provider worked well with the "ISF - Expert - Dark Room" with modest tweaks per environment. Netflix and Amazon Prime also worked well with "ISF - Expert - Dark Room" following the suggestions but this is where it required more changes to OLED, Contrast and Color. The original "Blade Runner" - 4K HDR DVD was very grainy on "Cinema" - "Technicolor Expert" was more natural as the original Film Stock, at the time, had more grain than current Kodak Negative Stocks. Apple TV defaulted to HDR and a "Picture'"preset that looked like "Video". "Cinema" was more accurate and appropriate here. I think everyone is going to discover differences that require learning the basic tools for "Picture Setup". It is a good suggestion that people generally stay clear of color management that get you in the realm of calibration. My experience as a cinematographer for 30 years - the picture quality is stunning with out it.
Hello.. same here. I've bought b9.. And I've read on rtings that the pre-calibration on this TV is very bad. But after the calibration, it even surpasses c9. But I'm a noob in all these things. So my question is from this video settings can I match my B9 calibration settings with the C9 ? Thanks.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! For future reference, please don't jump back and forth between choices in the menu. It makes it so much more work to re-watch and make sure to have you recommended setting :)
Last 3 TVs, qled and really happy with picture and quality. Hedge on OLED because of price and burn in. i listened to fomo tech. he mentioned olded are now at qled prices. i bought the cx 10 55" 3 days ago. now i see why oled is better. i wont got back and the Samsung q90t i just bought is going back but i wish i could keep it, because it's a quality tv that did an awesome job. and watch out Samsung is catching up to OLED level blacks. till they do i will stick with lg. i owned the q90t 1 week prior to switching to oled. Did lots of video games and movies with the q90t on a rtx 2080ti
What is the difference between ISF Expert Bright and ISF Expert Dark? Could each theoretically be changed to look identical or do they have differences you can’t change?
Main difference between them is that Bright has Color gamut set to Wide by default to have more saturated colors in bright environment. You could copy settings from Dark to Bright or vice versa and have exactly the same presets.
Hi, I did not understand a difference between HDR and SDR. There is no such button in the menu that says HDR or SDR. When I watch a movie from a TV box is it HDR or SDR? I understand if it is in a good quality it is HDR, right? Is not the switch automatic ?
For SDR I have the Oled light at 40 and the Logo setting at Hight. The husband watches a lot of ESPN and the Golf channel, but he does change the channels a lot...LOL (so, I got that going for me) My question is, would those settings for SDR hurt the TV in any way? I do Have your recommended setting for the "cool" content...LOL, HDR and Dolby vision.
Darko I bought the LG C9 last month and wanted to say thanks for the video , do your setting for sale requires any equipment and do you suggest to buy the SDR and HDR for setting up the TV, would I just follow the setting you suggest after buying
Hey Eddie! You're welcome, glad you find this video helpful. Settings in my store don't require any equipment except for test patterns that you can download for free online. Document also contains more information about general and gaming content for SDR and HDR so it basically covers most usage scenarios.
Purchased. Very impressed with the outcome after applying your recommendations. Any suggestions on improving the look of panned shots, which don't look smooth, seemingly due to additional processing by the TV.
Hi! Thanks for your feedback. Panning shots will look smoother if you increase DeJudder in TruMotion - User setting. Just be advised that this will also introduce variations of speed of 24p content and in some scenes you can also see artifacts around moving objects.
Hey dude. You finish setting everything up and then you say “Apply to all inputs” and then “Reset everything” - if you click reset after all that you’ve done, won’t it put you back at square one? Or am I thinking about that function wrong?
Hey, I said that only to explain what does that control does - of course that it doesn't make sense to reset everything to default if picture is adjusted correctly. Only if you see something not right and you don't want to adjust everything to default, this is a handy shortcut.
What is the consensus on using dynamic tone mapping for the HDR settings, on or off on the c9? Many reviewers seem to like it, but the more heavy ones (like rtings) prefer it off. Do you set it to off or on? On looks too bright, especially in game mode but do add detail in very bright scenes. Also, do you prefer using the RGB setting or 4:2:0 when connecting it to a Nvidia GPU? Activating HDR when setting it to RGB FULL looks exactly the same as setting it to 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 for me... cannot wait for the G-sync firmware update!
How do I get into HDR Mode or Dolby Vision on my E9? I only have Picture Mode that lists Vivid through Expert Dark but no choice for HDR or any other Picture Mode. Thanks so much!
Hi Darko, great content. I would like to know if when I calibrate with a colorimeter and CALman those settings get adjusted automatically or is best to first adjust my settigns preferences and then do the calibration? I saw specifical video on how to calibrate the C9 with a colorimeter by Portrait Displays but they doesn't touched this point (my device is the i1Display Pro Plus 2019 hope it does the job). Thank you in advance.
Hey - automatic calibration with CalMAN should do all the necessary adjustments, but please give me some time as I will check this on my C9 OLED in coming days.
@@TVguyDarko many thanks on that. When I calibrated my Philips 55 7303 connected to a Windows PC I did the manual calibration with charts for every kind of image quality aspect (sharpness, contrast, gamma, ecc) then I did the fine tune with the iDisplay Pro Plus and provided software by xrite. As I'm a Photographer who print in a not so professional but good quality 5 inks printer I'm having great time in a color managed printing workflow getting many matches on screen to print and also to my LG G8 phone which "assuress" me I got a good calibration at least for what I aimed for print/web image creation. Hope to get the same results on the C9 because I love this panel quality but I'm afraid on not having color accuracy for graphic design and photography because you know this TV is pinnacle of picture quality and it's not definitely what people have at hands to see my pictures. I hope I've explained my point.
The only issue I have with 4k movies from my Panasonic player (most setting left to auto) is that if the black level is set to low, I lose detail in dark areas. I can pause a scene and turn it off and on, see things lost in shadow when I turn it to high, yet many reviews say leave to low. I follow the likes of your settings and that is the only thing that is off with my picture, just too dark and crushed, though could it be TV has had only about 150 hrs use, did read some people saying TV needs time to settle...no idea how true that is?
darko.....hi...i know you said that the white balance and color Management are diferent for every tv. but could you let me know what values you have put in yours? i´d like to try on my C9. thank you
It's not a good idea to raise the brightness above 51. So you destroy the black referenze and will lose contrast and realt black. At the end you have a black like an non Oled. To see the near black pattern you better have to raise the low end of the gamma equalizer. So you won't lose black and also can see near black.
Hi Darko, thanks for this great video. Just a quick question... If I copy all the values of the isf (Dark Room) setting to the technicolor setting (for example), then these two modes would perform EXACTLY the same? I mean, is each mode the sum of its values? Or there are settings for each mode that we can't control (maybe hidden)?
To be honest, I think they would perform slightly different as their baseline white balance/color system is adjusted in a different way. But definitely a good question and I will try to investigate next time I have a TV from LG in my room.
Hey, sorry for delay, haven't seen your comment till now. Have you found some good settings for gaming? Basically, I would use Game picture mode and adjust color temperature as in Movie mode.
Hi, I am thinking of buys B9, I am only concerned by the low ratings for pre-calibrated picture quality (4.9 rating on rtings.com). Is it sub-par? Do I have to calibrate it using some sort of calibration tools (or hire professional) or adjusting the picture options from the video would be just fine?
MrStingPower when you go outside, everything is “yellow” from the sun. You will get used to the “yellow” look on your TV, it is also better for your eyes
Thanks Darko, great job on explaining the individual settings! Besides thumbs up, I also bookmarked your video. My new 2019 C9 will arrive in 2 days, can hardly wait, but I wanted to ask you if having a professional calibration would make much difference or be worth the cost of $250.00 (or more)? Would most normal people even notice the pro calibration changes made, if any? THANKS for your reply!!!
@@bobgreta3280 I know it will sound stupid but I just have a ghosting issue when I go into cinematic mode playing Red Dead 2 Arthur and the horse ghost. I loved this game they removed a thing called ambient occlusion since then I had issues I got the B9 it's good but still little ghosting so trying to find best settings I'm not good with technology
Great Video Darko thanks. Could you give a advice? For the 65 Inch Version of the C9 which value for brightness gives you 120 nits in expert dark mode for SDR content?
If you want to see picture as close to the original creator's intent (and not like TV manufacturer want), then these are the correct recommendations. If you like picture with soap opera effect and with artificially sharpened edges, then activate those controls.

I want to know the same in particular Red Dead Redemption 2 I have a ghosting issue if you cos help me if you you found best settings please let me know
Hi - usually this won't disappear as pixels in that area are worn out more than the rest of the screen and if you play some patterns to remove burn-in, the entire screen again ages equally and traces remain. Just one question - when you play this video on your TV, is the logo visible on all shades and colors or only on some - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uj1FaNupOm4.html
My c9 doesnt uave dolby vision and cinema home, it had a ASP setting above cinema..im not sure why the settings are different , and yes mines definently a 2019 c9 lol
Yes - as mentioned in the review, alpha 9 mainly improves Noise reduction which anyhow is something most people do not need. HDR PQ charateristics and Dynamic tone mapping are similar/same on both.

Great video thanks you Darko :) I just bought the C9 the other day, and are blown away. Well let me say it's even better the all the hype. From now on I will never look at an LCD again. So happy to be an OLED owner! And now to some questions I hope to get some help on :) I use my pc for both gaming and watching movies via Kodi. But using pc input does black out many picture options for movies. But when using game console mode, I can change them all - for HDR movies! So is the best approach then to just use game console mode as HDMI Input ? Oh and about the ALLM - instant game mode. It kicks in as soon as I start my pc, even if I dont have a game runnig, so I must disable that for watching movies I guess, right ? Thanks in advance and be safe!
If I disable instant game mode for the given Input I have more settings avalable. Guess they enabled it by default so reviewers and testers always measure the lowest input lag.
@@evi1techno Hi and thanks for the amswer! Have learned that, should have updated the post. Yeah thats the thing to do. Just disable game mode, as it will give you better input lag, hence why some settings beying greyed out 👍🏻
@@TVguyDarko Thanks. I know the controls are the same. I meant the picture settings for most accurate picture based on calibration you did with Alpha 9 - not 7.
I would like to invest in one of these tvs,the C9 would be more than likely my choice, but I would be to worried about burn in. I don’t believe one should have to “babysit “ a tv or worry about falling asleep after watching a movie or streaming something. I’m leaning toward the Samsung Q80R 55 inch.
I know, right? I bought my C9 worring about that too, but image quality is second to none: colors and black levels are impressive! So, all things considered, I think it's worth the risk. And I say risk in a huge metaphorical way, because if you're aware of dangerous situations (like CNN logos, unnecessary game huds or unhealthy long TV sessions), you'll be fine. I came from a 9 years-old plasma panel, so I think I may be used to it. Also, LG has built in the TV some features designed to prevent burn-in. Maybe that's just me trying not to worry much, but I feel confident nevertheless.
Im telling u right now the samsung is gonna disappoint. Forget the c9. It has a more "futuristic" look than the E9 but the E9 is the superior model. That samsung screen will break when u bump into it or put down a cup like i did. Seriously my samsung which i bought in 2018 brand new broke a few months ago cuz i set down a cup on the shelf under the tv. The vibration sent a huge black line going across my tv vertically. Now its rainbow colored. I just got the E9 almost got the C9 but the price being a little lower isnt even worth it. The E9 has a strong screen. The salesmen encouraged me to knock on it and slap it and nothing. No lights or hand prints. Spend a little more on that E9 and you will be fucking happy. The E9 also has really good sound. So u dont have to worry about getting that sound bar or surround sound for a while cuz the sound is just really good. U can jam to spotify on the E9 and it sounds like a decent car system.
C9 has eco mode which turns off the tv after 2/4 hrs if you don’t touch the remote you choose how long you want and it also has a sleep timer you can set
I couldn't access these settings either. EDIT: As soon as the TV is in HDR mode, the settings can accessed. In other words, any HDR video needs to be playing (or in pause) to access the settings.
@@Jayzteroid Thank Jari, one more question, I have free to air channels and also some live TV which are HD. However, when I go to picture setting, the setting do not show the ones for HD. Why?
Setting up my new C9 and following your setup I found on my set when I got to TRU Motion I did not have that kind of test pattern in bkgound + had no adjustable controls available, also my "HDMI Ultra High Deep Color" is greyed OUT.....PLEASE tell me if you can why is this happening on my set? THANKS!
Nothing will happen unless you adjust red, green or blue components on that level. This is simply a point in which you adjust the balance between colors - in this case for the near-black area.
Ross Bing actually with my C7, 50 in dolby vision was the same as 100 in sdr, if you set it to 100 in dv it will look washed out. Unless this is changed for the C9.
Hi - the sharpness of the image depends on the input signal. This live TV that you are watching, is it in standard or high definition? Is it via antenna or cable provider (where signal is more compressed than via antenna)?
Hi Darko i hope you get your hands on a samsung Q90r and hear your opinon and settings espically the hdr mode ! As always very useful and dedicated work ! thank you
Hi Serge! Thanks for your comment. I could get Q90R already, but only in 75-inches which is a bit of a challenge to fit in my room. I am waiting for a smaller one...
@@TVguyDarko Well ,i bought the 75 inch version and not the 8k 950r version because it's still early day for 8k and even the upscaling is minor to my humble opinion , but i'm pleased with the PQ it's simular with the oled and it isn't the best in anything but at the end for me the best overall performer. So i look forward to hear your opinion and espicially your hdr recommendations ! It's a pity you don't live in Belgium i should certainly hire you to calibriate my unit. grtz
@@sirqdoled1203 imho anything claiming to be 8k especially samsung is a waste of money. Samsung has shitty screens first off. They break very easy. I just replaced my samsung qled. Im never going back to samsung not even for 8k. Ur right. Its too early for 8k. Anything claiming to be 8k is experimental at best. Money is best spent on a solid 4k system.
@UC3YW7TZu-STFXDAP3kbDl0Q Sorry to hear you had some bad luck ! Stating a brand for your screen failure is a bit short sighted and probably due to anger of your lost money. As (ex) owner of several brands well most of the customers service can manage a huge upgrade( especially LG and Samsung they are the worst) except for Panasonic who was extraordinary helpful even for a rather basic tv model. For now i'm pleased with the Q90r but that can change in the future . At least you must have own a panel from every major tv brand to experience it flaws and strengths. I hope you have better luck with your next tv. Cheers
Jonnybeans Hungry it will only show up when you are viewing HDR or DOLBY Vision content. Start watching something in that format and then check settings, it should be there.
I just bought the pdf files from the store. How do I use this information to adjust white point balance? I was expecting all of the settings to be written out in the pdf.
Hi! Thanks for the purchase. It would be misleading to post individual white balance settings in the document as there is a chance you would get worse white balance then it is on your unit. The document works as a guide to help you understand all the controls and how you can do a lot simply by tweaking them. Of course that for correct white balance, gamma and colors you need to perform the actual calibration.
@@TVguyDarko It has actually gotten pretty effective on newer TV models. Before, it used to make things much blurrier, but nowadays, setting it to low can help a lot if you notice streaming artifacts. I normally wouldn't use any extra processing, but streaming artifacts can be annoying, so I sometimes set it to low. The reason why you can't tell a difference is because you tried it on frames that didn't have the artifact problem or you tried it on high quality content.
I don't know these terms do you have the B9 and do you happen to play any Xbox games like Red Dead Redemption 2? I have some ghosting issues with Red Dead if you could give me any tips?
Do you run a highspeed 2.1 hdmi or the latest hdmi cable. Some will not work if there low end or are not high-speed cables. I run 15ft Monster UHD Platinum Fiber Optic HDMI Cable 8k Ready.
@@mahmudulhassanhasib3816 I bought mine off eBay for $27 but if you buy them new for a 15' ft. There 44.99 I believe? Not too expensive, but for the price a noticeable difference.
@Dead Yeah no arguments there but I just can't stand the yellowish tint. Medium colour temp hits the spot for me. Have set the XBox One X to Game mode / OLED 95 / Contrast 95 / Brightness 45/ Sharpness 50 / Colour 55 / White Balance Colour Temp Medium / Rest unchanged. Wow just unreal! Still playing around with the other settings as we only got the 65C9 a week or so ago but also maxed Sharpness to 50 together with White Balance Colour Temp Medium for other stuff as well and it looks heaps better, at least to me. Picture is super bright even in a bright room and the colours just pop whereas with the default Warm and low Sharpness settings there was just no wow factor. Looked like any other 4K TV to me.
Actually E9 is better. Ur way better off. I just compared them at my favorite store and the E9 won by my standards and even the manager was jealous cuz he got the E8. The E9 is just so much fucking better bro. It has a better processor so its going to be very good for gaming.
@@marcomorales2739 No worries congrats it's worth every cent for mine. But do play around with picture settings. Don't just take the "accurate" or default settings as gospel. For me maxing Sharpness to 50 together with White Balance Colour Temp Medium took it to another level :)
See people dont understand they say lg has noise but there noise reduction actually works no other company that I've seen does really anything when it's on besides lose out on detail lg loses barley any detail and it actually eliminates alot of noise
