LG Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Repair: Ice Dispenser Flap Not Closing

A modern LG refrigerator ice dispenser is repaired. The symptom to the problem was that the ice dispenser flap was not closing. The ice dispenser flapper not working will cause warm air to enter the ice chute & partially melt the ice which can re-freeze & cause the ice to stop coming out. A straightforward "how to fix" video.

I can’t thank you enough for this video! Took us about an hour total to fix our broken screw issue! Thank you!! Felt so accomplished yesterday! 🎉

This is EXACTLY what happened to my fridge, and precisely the video I needed. Great tutorial; easy instructions. I didn't trust your #4 screws, and bought something closer to the size I was replacing. After figuring out why you used #4 screws, and a return trip to the hardware store, all is well. Thank you!

I have to say this is one of the best, if not the best, DIY repair videos I've watched. It was tricky at times, but the quality of the video and the steps shown were fantastic. Total cost of the repair, plus my time and a little aggravation, 19 cents. It would have been half that, but I bought two different length screws just in case :-). Thanks!

Wow! Thank you SO much! I am a 69 yo grandma and with your help I was able to fix mine which had the exact same problem. A few tips to anyone else doing it- pay attention to the configuration if the gadget that moves the bar holding the flap. Also when replacing the flap mechanism pay attention to how you put in the spring so it correctly puts tension so the flap closes.

The problem was exactly like the one in your video. My fridge must be a newer model since the removal of the icemaker insert was easier and did not require moving a lever through the ice chute. I was hesitant at first but I got an estimate for repair which included a diagnostic trip charge and are turn trip with parts. Calculating it could be a $500 + service repair, I tackled the project with faith in your video. I appreciated the advice of NOT using super glue, which totally made sense. I also used a 1" screw so hopefully it never happens again. Seems like this issue is really a manufacturer defect? The Grok Shop Rocks!

Thanks for the rundown. I’m excited to say that I only broke 2 tabs! They were two on the top. If you’re able to learn from my mistakes, just make sure you take the time to work out all of the tabs before yanking out the panel.

I have an LG LFX28968ST/02 which is very similar. I spent a lot of time looking up this model and viewing YOUTube videos trying to find one that shows almost exactly what you've done here. Now I feel confident pulling my front panel out to get to the dispenser area. Excellent video. Thanks for your help!!!

This was very helpful. I realized my unit was full of mold and wanted to get it clean. I would have never got it apart without this video. I was pulling really hard and it didn't feel like it would let go without breaking something. Finally it did "pop" and I continued to work it carefully. No broken tabs. I'm not sure the putty knife was necessary. Looking at the tabs, once it was apart, it looks like pulling straight out would have been the best bet. Thank you for doing the research.

Terrific video, thank you. I repaired my 4 year old LG LMXS27626 ice chute door using this. I agree that removing the dispenser door was extremely difficult. I went very slowly, used far more force than I thought I would have to, and eventually got the dispenser out after about 45 minutes. All tabs were intact, somehow. I had prepared to repair the screw post as you demonstrated, but much to my surprise, my problem was simply that the opposite side spring was not installed correctly! Incredibly easy fix, once I got the dispenser out of the door. I suspect it came from factory this way. I have had occasional problems with ice/frost jamming the chute, but seemed to be happening much more frequently lately, and the COVID-19 quarantine finally gave me enough time to trouble shoot! Thanks again!

Thank you for this video! I had the exact problem once I opened up the dispenser. Your video was so helpful in showing your solution which I used too. Thank you for taking the time to create this very clear and concise video. I'm seeing this video AFTER having an LG service tech visit my home three times to repair the ice maker. The problem I'm having appears to be a flap that is not sealing tightly. It open and closes when activated. This is causing water to periodically dribble out of the chute. It was a similar problem we had with a Samsung refrig in which the Samsung tech just replaced flap assembly unit - problem solved. I explained this to the LG tech and said the problem was with the ice maker - which he ordered and installed. Knowing how the flap assembly works will hopefully help me recommend to the LG tech, who I'm getting to know pretty well, to replace it. LG - Life's Good! (only when your appliances are working correctly)

Thank you so much for posting this fix. You may have guided me towards the solution for replacing just the LED panel cover (mine got damaged due to humidity dark spots). However, as you pointed out, replacing it is almost prohibited, as I cannot manage to open the cover to replace it . So simple, yet so hard to reach for an opening...There is the risk of damaging the edges of the control panel itself while trying to reach for the cover, hence creating another bigger monster. I will try to find someone that could help me, and will save your detailed video as a DYI guide. Many thanks again!

Thank you. Awesome video! I had the same issue with the ice flap and the root cause was the same. I (krazy) glued the plastic base together with a wood tooth pick inserted in the center to guide the alignment. I drilled the toothpick out after the glue dried. I still used a slightly longer #4 stainless steel sheet metal screw. I had the repair done in 20 minutes. The longest part(s) was the trip to the hardware store and the cleaning of the interior components (moldy). Two tabs broke but it snapped back in fine.... like new.

This was very helpful ! I expected to find a broken post like shown here, since my symptoms were identical. The screw post was not broken, things just seemed to stick. I took a cue tip with a little silicon spray and lubed the white lever and points were it interacts with other components. This seemed to work...at least for now. It does look like the white rod starts to deform over time, so maybe down the road that will need to be replaced. Getting the panel out was a hassle. I tried the "pop out" method I saw elsewhere, but that didn't work for me ( or I am too faint of heart ). I did manage to pry it out without marring the finish. Thanks for linking to the manual - nice to read that even the pros break a few clips and that it's "SOP"

We have an LMXS27626S with this failure. I used a combination approach to removing the dispenser cover, first the putty knife to pop some tabs loose and then tugging a bit. It came loose after about 15 minutes. The same post was broken. The post and interior are black. I removed the retaining clip and the left spring came off while I was fixing the post, so I had to figure out how to reinstall the spring. Reinserting the dispenser is much easier than removing it. Great video, just what I needed. Thank you for putting it together.

Oooohhhhh thank you! Flap wasn't closing and it was EXACTLY THAT SCREW. LG should have a recall on this! The only thing I'd add is that if you dare to try to superglue the broken plastic piece, you may end up with superglue on your hands, your tools, etc. 42 Cents, for a pair of screws of slightly different lengths. It's a bear to get the panel off, but the fix was just as you showed!

Great video, exactly the same problem I had Thanks! Tip: I used automotive door/dash trim removal tools, worked like a charm with no broken tabs.

Thanks for showing how the dispenser is disassembled. My issue isn’t a stuck flap but the ice chute and water controller have completely disintegrated. Went to get ice and small screws and springs flew everywhere! If I can get replacement parts it looks like they’re easy enough to replace. Otherwise I’m shopping for a new, non Korean built fridge.
