And colonialism had good and bad effects. But it really, really, really had a lot of bad effects. The trans-Atlantic slave trade is just one example. I think you may be the one that needs to have a more nuanced historical perspective on African history, if you are going to speak about it.

Yes, if you consider basic human rights an expression of "Western Culture" instead of humanity, then it's of course their own decision whether or not to oppress certain groups. The right for self determination should be theirs and theirs alone. Any action taken to alter that significant value diminishes the message and every messenger to follow. I have attempted to focus this on principles and not on political divisions because as history has shown...all sides can play fast and loose with the message if it serves them.
