Setting up an external CD drive on a Compaq Presario 425! Since this PC only has two already-filled ISA slots and nowhere for an internal optical drive, Backpack setups were great. Now to repair it...

Strange how RU-vid does that to a person. I watch bigclivedotcom even though I haven't a clue about what the hell he's talking about. And I watch Simone Giertz even though I don't have much interest in robots (though, in her case, I know it's because I've got a crush on her!)

Feel free to hate me, but I really liked that song. If you're into progressive rock, that's probably your cup of tea, if you're not... probably sounds like garbage. Anyway, I made a tiny bit of research and found it's Todd Duane's work. Listen to other stuff from him... really cool. There's something about these old all in one computers that I've always loved. I've actually owned two of the later case designs of this Compaq but sadly had to sell them awhile back. I miss both of them. Such great aesthetics and love that you can just plop them anywhere, hook up a keyboard and mouse, and you're ready to go. My dream all in one is the Packard Bell Spectria, yes, an all in one Packard Bell. Too bad they're ridiculously hard to find, even harder to find than the corner design.

your channel has reinvigorated such a spark in me. I too worked in my high school as a pc tech while attending, and was employed by them after graduating for a while too - which lead me to various pc tech roles at the apple factory, bestbuy/geeksquad, and circuit city's firedog as a trainer and supervisor of techs; until i decided to change careers and go into graphic design - i've since become 'a mac person' but still remember every DOS command, every virus fix (xp's sasser worm anybody?) etc. and just spent the day troubleshooting my friends' PC rebuilding projects; we built a home theater PC to be a PLEX and Steam client; a gaming rig with all fresh parts, and the leftovers into an extra PC; doing the old gambit of windows updates, driver installs, browser installs, and classic utilities everyone needs; sigh - macs have spoiled me. lol. felt good to get back into it. watching this was the icing on the cake today. Thanks so much!!!! #respect

Thanks for that flashback. I worked for Micro Solutions from 97ish to when they closed as technical support. It was a great company and I remember the old cdrom drive you had in its prime. They also had tape drives, hard drives, PD drives (that tech didn't last long), cdrw drives, and at the end also did a NAS box and fingerprint locked hard drive. It was a great company to work for where the tech, sales, owners, engineers all knew each other and were a tight group. Good to see a few products still exist. LoL

Yep. The first CD-ROM drive I used (in around '93 I think) was a single-speed parallel-port interface. Horribly slow, but back then it was amazing! You could get shareware CD's at the time (before everyone had the internet), and that provided hours of fun looking through all the software. Also, in college I had that exact ZIP drive, parallel port.. Sooo sloooowww, but I loved it!

The first home computer we had was an Compaq Presario, a newer type than this, with speakers too, they were under the corners of the screen, and Windows 3.11. Too bad it has been thrown away, it was super expensive when new too... I miss using DOS and trying to get games working with too little RAM and Hard Drive space, I played DOOM, Hexen and WarCraft 2 into the 2000`s on that one. A time when you finally got the game running, you actually deserved to play it, and that was an achivement in itself.

On my Presario 425 I had as a kid I installed a soundblaster and spliced the power to the hdd. That got routed through the second isa (pci?? I can't remember) slot along with the ide cable from the soundblaster. In other words, I had an internal 4x cd-rom next to the computer. Worked great for years. 👍🏻

I had a Backpack parallel port CD-R drive back in the day. Used it with my PII 400 Compaq Presario desktop in college. As it was pretty much impossible to use the PC when trying to burn a disc, I would always start the process before I left for class, all the while praying the job would complete successfully while I was away. Most of the time it worked fine, but when it didn't, it was always frustrating because errors with the CD disc or software often took the whole computer down, costing me time and wasting the media, which wasn't exactly cheap back then.

Once a friend and I had to make copies of a set of medical CDs, the cd writer we had on that moment was a parallel external unit, I don't remember the brand but had beige and green exterior, its came with adaptec software and the max record speed was....1X. Damn!, that machine was slow and tricky, if you walk near the desktop the software would show you a "Buffer low or buffer empty" message and the record fails. We left the recorder working and get out of the room really! its was the best way to do the job.

I was restoring a Sega Genesis and opened it up to find tons of rust on the inner RF shielding, didn't even matter that it was there really but I sanded it all down and sprayed it with a nice even coat of rustoleum primer to stop it from rusting further. Not sure why but it's super satisfying to know it won't degrade any more I guess.
