Please share your experience with us, if you know the correct answer. I do appreciate for all the answers.
The Original Battery 15.6v 3Ah
- Normal voltage is 15.6v = 13 cells x 1.2v
- Fully charged voltage is 19.5v = 13 cells x 1.5v
- Capacity 3Ah or 3000mAh
- 13 Nimh cells 1.2v 3Ah or 3000mAh
Lithium-ion battery 18v
- Normal voltage is 18.5v = 5 cells x 3.7v
- Fully charged voltage is 21v = 5 cells x 4.2v
- Capacity is 3Ah or 3000mAh
- 5 li-ion 18650 LG 3000mAh 20A
Lithium-ion battery 14.4v
- Normal voltage is 14.8v = 4 cells x 3.7v
- Fully charged voltage is 16.8v = 4 cells x 4.2v
- Capacity is 6Ah or 6000mAh
- 8 li-ion 18650 LG 3000mAh 20A
The motor can accept 19.5 volts. I think 18v or 5s is the best choice for this project, but the battery case can only load 5 cells so the capacity is only 3Ah. If the motor works well with a 14.4v battery, it will be good because the 14.4v capacity is 6Ah. I decided to build both types for testing. As a result, the drill with 14.4v battery performed well with the test. I think 14.4v is my best choice for this tool.
I hope you find this video useful and enjoy!
I am happy to receive feedback, suggestions to improve myself.
!!! I'm sorry for the mistake if I did this video !!!

I would be afraid that too much energy would burn down the motor. Since it's not happening I think I would use 14V for everyday work and I would keep 18V battery loaded for special use or for some other impact tool. Great work!

You should run it a "reasonable" amount of time with both packs, and measure how hot the speed controller is getting. Remember to also check at less than full RPM. It is probable that this is the part you would wear out, unless your tasks often put the drill in a near stall state, then with the motor bogged down the 18V will be worse because it's not pulling air through it. Ultimately I have faced a similar situation and I chose neither. I would have chosen a 14.4V, 4S1P pack with only 4 cells, because like you, I have multiple drills and when I need high power I will reach for one of my newer more powerful drills, with newer cells in their battery packs as well, so for rebuilding an old drill that already has significant wear anyway, to not push it too hard and make the battery pack retrofit worthless because the drill dies, I would use the drill more for light duty, with ligher weight battery and cutting the # of cells I used would be more important, so it would just be a 4 cell pack and what I'd often end up using one for, is have a 1/4" adapter in it for screw driving, so I have one more powerful drill making the drilled holes then that drill driving the screws, and in that case, since your holes are pre-drilled, the torque isn't needing to be much, and higher RPM just makes modulating the lower RPM you want, require more attention and care. However, for lighter weight, that isn't the right drill to choose no matter how little the battery pack weighs. Unless you have other tools that can use the same battery pack, I would question whether it is worth rebuilding a pack for it at all, let alone two packs at different voltages so you need two separate chargers and with one, not even being a regular dock since you need the two separate PSUs so something has to get swapped around to charge both packs, making it less convenient and subject to user error if you aren't paying attention. Likewise having just those battery connectors with wire soldered on, wouldn't cut it for me. I'd want it plug and play for any random soul that comes along and thinks that they know how to charge a tool battery without realizing what you've done. :) Plus if your dodgy generic chargers fail and cook the batteries, 4 cells makes a smaller fire than 5 or 8 cells. ;) We could hope that the BMS saves the cells, but to some extent those BMS are only designed to work with a properly functioning charger and could fry themselves if the charger starts getting wonky. Another thing that can fry the BMS is the back EMF from a brushed DC motor, often the BMS have instructions to put a capacitor and/or diode(s) across the power leads to mitigate that. It does make you stop and think, if the BMS fails, will the result just be a dead drill, or worse.

It depends on the motor nomimal voltage. If the motor is 15-20V then you can use 5s configuration. If you don't have the motor's data then it's better to go with 4s configuration, in high current loads you might even have better performance than 18V because of less voltage drop and more power from the battery pack! Moreover, if the motor is not capable withstanding 18V in the long run you are diminishing motor's life span.

Whether it is 18v or 14.4v it is important to have a bms while you charging the battery pack. As drills are highly power consumpting , charging and discharging cycles may very short so you have to charge once a day(may differ).how ever li ion batteries are more dangerous than nimh batteries so you must have a bms. But the issue with having a bms inside a drill is whenever we use to drill something ,onset of drilling: requires a non-rotating stage. In this stage drill motor act as a ohmic resistor, So you know that copper winding inside drill has very low resistance ,so ultimately current goes high as #hit. So BMS definitely cutoff its power and drill goes off. Every time you try to drill something ,this happens. So it's better to measure current draw before setting a battery pack. The answer to your question ,according to my knowledge , is to use upper voltage as the voltage go high power of the drill goes high. This is true only if you dont use a BMS inside the drill. So you have to connect battery directly to the drill. But whenever you charging it's better to use a BMS . Unless single cell may die very soon because capacity of each cell is not equal . The cell which has lowest capacity will charge soon as well as discharge soon. This will lead to over-discharge and over-charge of that particular cell. Think this may help you in some manner.😊

Okay, I do appreciate with your information.
@thilinaakalanka5678
@thilinaakalanka5678 2 года назад
@_Schwalbe_262_ A capacitor won't be effective as a soft starter because if we try to start drill with a load, current drain will exceed the maximum current limit of BMS and it gets off. best option to get maximum power of drill while using a BMS is , use BMS to charge cells, but not to supply drill motor. So power line to drill should directly come from battery terminals. By this way we can have the maximum power of drill but keep in mind over discharge protection is not available in this method
@thilinaakalanka5678
@thilinaakalanka5678 2 года назад
@_Schwalbe_262_ images.app.goo.gl/dN2VDThbf45wCdaH7 here the schematic. The idea was to bypass the bms and supply directly to motor from battery.
@DmitryNosachev
@DmitryNosachev 2 года назад
@@thilinaakalanka5678 Your advice leads to a risk of damaging the cells by overdicharging or worse - fire hazard in case of motor failure. You should never use li ion batteries without BMS. Your BMS may activate due to high starting current, but most of them can be modded to increase the delay of overcurrent protection by soldering a different capacitor to a specific pin.
