In the late 70's I was into the Village People in a big way. In 1980, when their movie came out, I was one of the first to go to the theater to see it. The movie was loosely based on how they became a group. At his audition, one of the guys sang Danny Boy. This group was made up of guys, who individually had great voices, but actually when they sang together, sounded like an Army platoon and the individual greatness disappeared, which was a shame. Then, there is also the fact that when they performed, they sang to pre recorded "canned music." Had they been able to afford musicians, they could have done solos. Something I learned in decades of singing with a choir is that a great singer is at his/her best when performing with musicians as opposed to singing to pre recorded music. The musicians can adjust to the singer, giving them an added measure in a line, whereas the sheet music dictates otherwise. A young reactor here on YT made the remark that singers of the past were better singers than today's singers. I told her that wasn't true. It's just that the way today's music is performed has so many gimmicks that it doesn't allow the greatness of the singer to come out. I had earlier sent you a recommendation on a BABYMETAL song that the group performed only once in concert. In this song, Yui and Moa showed that they are actually great mezzo sopranos that can hit high A over C, which is a rare feat for a female singer.
