I think one of the biggest problems was Liam bringing up Zayn’s parents. Zayn has never said his parents weren’t supportive, so whether they were or were not, it’s not Liam’s place to speak about. Don’t bring up someone’s family

this interview could have been an opportunity for him to talk about his passions and future projects. This is a whole different version of Liam i hope he is self aware to see his behavior is not representing himself well. That whole interview was massive ego-stroking right from the posture, style and conversation magnifying his achievements and degrading 1D. thanks for your honest thoughts Max

I think Liam is on this very self destructive journey right now, he started drinking again after having alcohol issues and then managing to stay sober for several months. He simply doesn’t care about his behavior anymore which is worrying. I don’t think he’s a bad person, i just think he’s in a dark place and his behavior is just a reaction of his mental state. He proved himself to be a good person over the years, i think this podcast was more of a cry for help/attention (trying to make people notice he’s not doing okay) more than anything. I’m more sad and worried for him more than i’m mad at him for what he said. I wish him the best truly and he doesn’t deserve all the hate and death threats he’s getting on the internet right now, if anything it’s making things worst for him but people don’t care because it’s “fun” and easy to jump on the liam hate train like everybody is doing

Zayn has always talked about how supportive his parents are & how much he respects them. All he wanted to do was get his parents a home & make them proud. Liam Payne going on air calling out zayns upbringing is just so offensive if yk how hard his parents worked for their family.

6:29 the worst of it was that zayn is a really really private person and he has always portrayed his family as his best cheerleaders so when liam went on a podcast with Logan Paul of all people and talked about zayn's family ,when zayn himself doesn't do that ,it's just ridiculous and low

Agree with you that this was all about his ego and trying to prove something because he really does seem resentful of being the least liked and least successful from the group. While the others have been touring and releasing music that they're proud of, this past year Liam has been promoting other people's nfts, collabing with tiktokers, singing at birthday parties for money, talking about 1d for attention and even going on this podcast, which is all a massive downgrade from 1d days. Tbh I used to feel bad for him, but after this podcast where he gossips about Zayn behind his back with people that dislike him, about his private life and upbringing, he has lost any sympathy I ever had for him. Zayn isn't even there to defend himself and everyone knows that Logan's brother, Jake, tried to purposefully antagonize Zayn on camera from outside his hotel room for views, so the fact that Liam would be so disloyal to someone who was once like a brother to him in the band, is truly messed up. Zayn has never said one single word about Liam since he left the band. To call him disrespectful to his gf, when Liam personally knows nothing about them is so pathetic and to misrepresent Zayn's upbringing when Z has said many times that his parents were supportive and his mom pushed him to audition for the X Factor, is also a bad look for Liam.

i appreciate this take a lot! as someone that knows just about nothing about one direction/the members, i saw him being dragged like crazy on twitter so heard (a bit) about this interview. i'm with you thinking that most people are good overall and that he seems like he's really not in a good place right now. i know it's your job as a communication coach, but i would just like to say i really admire your communication abilities! you were very eloquent and respectful here. love your videos as always!

Liam is still successful enough that it is weird that he went to this podcast. I think that it is important to have compassion for people who are obviously in active addiction. We shouldn't be hypocritical and have compassion for fake characters like Rue from Euphoria but not real life human beings who went through trauma right before our eyes. It doesn't mean that we excuse whatever people do, but people who are sending him hate and whatnot are being so weird. You NEVER know what will tip someone over the edge so if we have nothing kind or helpful to say, I think fans would be kind by not adding to the noise.

Liam has been talking about Zayn like this since Zayn left 1D. I'm surprised that people are only noticing it now. Zayn left, and spoke about unfair treatment in group specifically songwriting (which Liam and Louis got most of), and song choices and the management. Louis and Liam took that personally and started shading Zayn back therefore the fans got divided and accused Zayn of dissing 1D. So nothing new here I guess people are only seeing it for what it is. Liam will do an interview and almost always mentions Zayn which I have found so weird. Going between jokes about whatever Zayn or insisting Zayn will forever foreve be his family, it's a sad and confusing cycle coz Zayn never mentions him or any of the boys in his interview. Even when asked he quickly answers the question and moves on without saying much. And yes Liam seems like he's suffering or crying out for help, I think he feels stuck and doesn't understand why his solo career isn't working out like his other band mates.

"Full disclosure, this is just my personal observation/opinion. Honestly, I'm disappointed but not surprised at his behavior. I haven't watched the full interview yet but based off of what I've read, I think he's just tired. Let's face it, Liam is a people pleaser by default. He's been trying to save face and tell people exactly what they wanna hear (especially us fans) for some time now and that is mainly what keeps him "relevant" to society and the media outside of the fanbase. But now, he is under scrutiny for his relationship issues and, from the looks of it, is no longer sober (which can cause one's behavior to spiral tremendously). There aren't many people he is able to please right now. And after a while, pleasers become bitter and resentful, eventually dropping their act and speak/act from a place of frustration and hurt and find personal resolve in finally telling their perspective or pushing the negative light onto someone else. Levels of maturity vary in situations like this. Some use arrogance/an inflated sense of self to mask the underlying insecurity they are facing, doing just about anything to "fit in" with the people they're around. I should know because I'm a people pleaser myself. Liam is no exception. It breaks my heart tbh, but I've seen this coming for a while now. I love Liam and understand that he is human just like the rest of us. But I've lost a bit of respect for the person he is becoming. I also can't help but think this is all just another grab for media attention, considering he knows full well what kind of fallout a situation like this ensues." That's what I wrote a few days ago. After watching the full interview and your analysis, you explained my thoughts perfectly. I agree with everything you said and think Liam needs a solid support system rather than his fans joining in with the rest of the cancel culture. He seems to be in an unfortunate season of self-destructive behavioral patterns and should seek professional help. Maybe the fallout of this interview was just the wake-up call Liam needs, but that's just my opinion. I hate to see him spiral like this and really hope he gets in a better head space.

Liam is musically very talented. He needs to rise above petty things and genuinely concentrate on making music. Liam loves fame (most people do), but he is not getting that as much as he wants. He should focus on music first and let his genuine talent show. Fame will come. His bitterness showed when he talked about Zayn. I genuinely like Liam's music and his vocal range is good. Focus on your own talent and improve on it.

i'm glad you didn't try to justify his actions, thank you for being honest, what pissed us too was him airing zayn's family problems, and saying they weren't supportive, even tho zayn always said he respected and loved his family, and don't get me started on the back handed compliments for lou, it felt like he wasn't really articulating or thinking about what he was saying, i wonder how he'll bounce back from that

On of the worst things you can do is take someone's story away from them. Zayn is the only one who should be speaking on his family and upbringing. Now although still not cool I think people would've received this better if he just focused on his issue with Zayn and not us others issues to justify not liking him. Zayn barely speaks on anything but his music so this was a big violation to me because anyone could see him being the only non white member he was struggling bad and developed a eating disorder. Dude had no support at all but they acted shocked when he walked away from a bogus contract and people who didn't really mean him any good.

He always seemed very bitter and envious to me to be completely honest with you, not just with the other 1D members but with other successful male acts such as BTS and Justin for example.

I know Liam is getting shit for what he said about 1D boys, etc but what is also disrespectful is what he said about Cheryl. For those that don’t know, Cheryl Cole is held in high regard in the UK. At the height of her career she was receiving so much attention from the media, press etc that Simon Cowell even likened it to attention princess Diana got. Cheryl talked about how traumatizing it was and after a very upsetting divorce from her husband Ashley; she vowed to from that point on be extremely private about her personal life. SHE has been fiercely guarded about being a mother, She doesn’t talk about it, doesn’t show her sons face etc. etc. A women’s birth is so personal and probably the time in your life you feel most vulnerable and uncomfortable and he just blurted out the fact she “hemorrhaged badly” when Cheryl hasn’t spoken about that herself and we never would’ve known otherwise.... it’s all so wrong Liam wtf

He said nothing nice about Zayn. Zayn's parents have been so supportive and the way he said his upbringing is "different" with a racist undertone was the worst thing. And why was he even talking about Zayn when Zayn hasn't said a word about his existence in years??

I'll give you an honest opinion on what most people against Liam think. Most of us were supporting him. And we sympathize with the fact that he's in a really dark place. We get that he is...faking healthiness in a way. If it was only to that limit, believe me, all of us would shower him with support rather than be against him. What everybody hated was that to push past his pain and trauma, Liam used somebody else's trauma. Somebody who once was his friend, trusted him and who is CURRENTLY unproblematic and living his life peacefully. About his comment "that one didn't age well"...here's the thing. Indirectly, he's supporting the ideology that Zayn abused Yolanda, something which is proven to be false. He also brought up Zayn's family and childhood, something which was NEVER his to share. And if people defend him saying that he's right now in a dark place and that's why he's doing this... Then what about Zayn and Louis and Harry? They as well were in dark places - Zayn the most. Jabs were made at the boys as individuals, but never at a false accusation or at their family. And that has no justification. Even previously, Liam has taken digs at Zayn by making the "Zayned joke" - one which is actually offensive if the context is taken. But nobody took it seriously. This however, is something where Liam took it too far. I'm sorry, but no defense will cover up what he's said. It was, is and will remain wrong on his part. (Please don't hate)💛

im so SICK of people making memes and making fun of him, i even saw people making stuff up to make it worse. what liam needs is a great supportive system, he's always struggled and desperately needs help. yes he shouldnt have talked about zayn and it was wrong wrong but some ppl think they can just throw unwanted hate. i really hope li gets away from social media and take care of himself:/

He does seem to be “medicated” or drinking. It’s too bad & hard to watch but we all have our good and bad days. I can’t imagine going through life with every part of it in the public eye. I don’t know why he would even do a podcast with these guys. I hope things get better for him soon. I truly believe the boys were, are & will always be family.

9:40 That's my country and I promise you the hotel didn't provide anything for us, fans were just waiting outside the hotel to show love and catch a glimpse of any of the boys. He just sounds so arrogant and trying to look like a victim when, at the end, the 5 of them went out to the balcony to greet us and record it for the movie. Overall, the whole interview was extremely disrespectful towards the other members, disclosing personal information about them (like Zayn's upbringing and speaking about Louis' confidence) that just should have remained private.

At first I was mad, but I rewatched it and...he is clearly lost. He looks angry, unhappy and pent up. I hope he gets the help he needs.

I feel sad for him that he even feels like he has to boost his ego, and that he is bashing others and his experience in 1D to do that. He wouldn't have made it through X-Factor that season if the band wasn't formed, and who knows where he would be now, but I believe it would've been a way harder journey for him. Each of the other boys has been thankful for the band and that experience. And maybe Liam is, but he didn't say or hint anything to that effect. I don't know if you reacted on Patreon to his comment about his song outselling the other boys, but that was off-putting too. They've each been really successful since the hiatus! I think what bothered me the most was when he said that he hopes Zayn gets the help that he needs. That was probably the most arrogant comment to me, especially since he has a lot going on in his own life (really not good things) and he could've been a bit more humble about it. I really hope Liam, and any of the boys that need it, get the help that they need.

Something was clearly up when Liam was interviewed after the Will Smith incident. He had clearly been self medicating. Liam wanted the band to get back together and I dont think Harry will do it without Zayn and Zayn is not agreeing to reunion anytime soon, leaving Liam feeling bitter and upset. Also perhaps a bit of jealousy with Zayn. Its all very sad, Liam seems very lost right now.

Wow very well explained by you. You are so calm, right on the point, and got the perfect clips for discussion. He had a couple whiskey glasses during the interview ( which I think is not professional not only for Liam but also for the hosts. ) They are having a conversation with a person under the influence and this is WRONG , IMO. I love 1 D boys, they were funny, talented, and successful . The other boys are much more reserved when talking about ex bandmates. I never expected this from Liam , considering all the interviews he had before. I do not know how is he going to fix his disrespectful words towards them. Saying “ I did not articulate myself in the best way” does not excuse him. He needs to apologize publicly to especially Zayn , same way he insulted him publicly, knowingly or unknowingly . Even if Liam described a specific fight with zayn, or his experience with him exactly I would have take this better, than him talking about zayns family, it's weird cause he def knows how well zayn has describe his parents and how much he loves them, he literally went to x factor for his mom. Zayn is the only one who can talk about his upbringing, no one else. To me Liam comments seems as a type of stereotypes over a poc family more than anything else. And if it's not like that, and in fact zayn upbringing wasn't the best then he is taking that story away from him and telling it to the world, and to someone who zayn does not like, u can't share someone weaknesses or trauma to everyone, that's not ok. And considering zayn has only good things to say about his family and how encouraging they are, if this is true then is something Liam probably knew during 1d cause zayn trust him enough to share it, wich make this horrible to me.

Liam has this weird obssesion with Zayn, he is also jealous and shocked by his talent and attention. I would say that he is hurt by the fact that he worked harder than the other boys and that wasn't recognized as much he was expecting, Liam waited 2 years for another oportunity on x factor and probably another 6 before that dreaming really hard with an career. What we must understand is that Liam was a single artist before one direction and by putting him to work with other 5 kids who have never been on stage before Simon Cowell gave Liam the message about his potencial as a single artist which is confirmed years later by Liam's solo project being the biggest floping of all the 5 boys. Liam became an adult being AN one direction with a lot of people taking care of him and his life for him after that he probably struggled to figure out who he was without the band, which is common among teen celebs. Liam Payne is not fine because this industry can be hard, working really hard and being disciplined gives you pretty much no guarantee of sucess. It depends on other facts that you can't pretend to have and sometimes it's attached to who you are and what matters is how much you can sell. Liam have been flying around the world to play at birthday parties, where people know him mostly for the one direction days which are over. He went from playing for thousends of people 7 days per week to 15 year old birthdays and that would be hard to anyone. Paul Logan is the type of son of a bitch who will try to explore people's worst moments in life so this entire Interview is about exploring the lowest points of Zayn and Liam and that also sounds just like jealous to me. Paul himself says he had a beef with zayn in the past so he invited Liam to say shit about Zayn, he didnt thought people would stand up on Zayn's side and he also don't give a fuck about Liam's life being destroyed by the Interview. It's all about revenge and attention.

He's the definition of chip on the shoulder right now and that chip is getting bigger and bigger. I love him but he needs intervention. The stuff he said about being a dad were lacking his usual warmth too which for me was the saddest.

Hi Max. I agree with everything you said about Liam here. It makes me a little sad about both him and Zayn. I wish that people had said the same things about Zayn (when he left the band and a few years after) that you're now saying about Liam now, i.e. "he's not in a good place right now. at the end of the day, he is a good person, etc." One of the few good things about covid is that it has brought greater attention to discussions about mental health. Some people say stupid things when they are not in a good place emotionally/under stress/under the influence. I think Liam is also feeling defensive because he was never able to get a good solo tour going. Louis is doing well now. Harry and Niall have had at least 2 big tour rounds each. Zayn is just not really interested in doing a tour.

the thing is... if you watch some of his interviews after 1d, he's been like this, and he's been saying this kind of comments and, mind you, the band disbanded 6? 7? years ago he probably is in a dark place, but i think he's been in this dark place since 1d he's also been open about his alcohol addiction he had while in the band and that he, like other members, had to play a role, from what they were saying to how they dressed it was all more or less controled by their management, it's good because this way they wouldn't have a really bad influance on their young audience, but at the same time the lack of freedom at a young/teenage age can f you up but that's just what i think / observed (sorry for my bad english)

In my opinion, Liam is in active addiction right now. I love him, and I hope he gets back on track. I don't think these guys are funny airing him drinking alcohol when I'm sure they know his problems, most of us do as he has not made that a secret. It's obvious just hearing the things he's talking about, and the way he's acting, he's f#####d up here. I get what you said about his eyes and his disconnecting. Drugs. What Liam said was not cool and uncalled for. However, he's a human just like all of us, he's going to make mistakes especially if he's not in a great place right now. In my opinion, this whole interview seemed off. Liam certainly doesn't deserve the hate he is receiving.

A lot of fans were turned off Liam some years ago when he portrayed his homophobic attitude in some negative comments that he made regarding that. Tyler Oakley (a previous well known American gay RU-vidr) called him out on it and talks about it in his book called ‘Binge’ in 2015.

I don't know anything about 1direction or the dude's dynamics but to me, this dude comes off as the type of person who thinks is better than you and gets jealous if you get better results than him. It reminded me of that episode of The Simpsons with Frank Grimes

I think this is the first interview I've seen of yours that I didn't like the interview! This poor kid does indeed seem totally lost right now. Thank you for doing an analysis of this - it is always good to learn what not to do as much as what to do!

zayn was literally nothing but nice to liam. for a while we all thought liam was the only one zayn still spoke to out of one direction so for him to just throw him under the bus like this now is very weird.

I think a lot of directioners, myself included, are just disappointed. Both in him but more importantly for him. He struggled with sobriety and then managed to achieve it for several months so to see him come out of nowhere and do an interview *drinking whiskey* is just upsetting. he needs a better support system because it's obvious the people he has around right now aren't helping him.

I don't understand what happened to him, It feels like every chance that he had ever had he threw away with this interview. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs, I always cared about him and even though he said some very horrible things he is a human being who needs to figure this out. Hopefully one day we'll get the old Liam back. :/

I feel you can tell just by the way he is speaking, that he is uncomfortable. Whether in this interview or just in general. This is not a podcast I feel he would normally go on. But that is based on past podcasts and interviews. Just the things that he said, do not match up with his past views(past even as in the past few months). But he is going through a lot definitely. Yet, as many others have said, it does not excuse his behavior in this interview and his statements.

If you are gonna call Zayn by a different name at least call him Zack, iykyk.

Oh and anyone else disturbed that Liam said his company has almost “cured” schizophrenia? Why aren’t we talking about that?

The biggest problem with this interview is everytime he was “boosting” his own ego he would always be simultaneously tearing another person down. There was no isolated confidence, it always came with tearing another band member down.

Month ago liam said he want to fight with simon and logan and he tweet asong called logan paul and the lyric said how fake is everything around these two brother . liam didn’t chose to seat with who thats what make him uncomfortable and thats not usual liam we know through all these12 years

This is not the Liam I remember just a few years ago. He used to be so humble and adored his bandmates. His eyes would tell a whole love story when he would talk about his boys. It's painful to see him in this head state as a 1D fan. I hope he gets out of it and focuses more on his mental health and overall wellbeing.

I don't think that what he said about Zayn was nice at all. Zayn always talked in a positive way about his family, so even if this is true, its clearly something Zayn wouldn't want the public to know. So for me this part was actually one of the worst things Liam said tbh, bc now he's bringing in Zayns family and exposing information that shouldn't have come out

i totally agree with what you said. throughout the whole interview, 3 of them were always provoking him and as he got more comfortable, he started to give unnecessary info and details about zayn. and i also felt like he was trying to be the ''funny guy'' in the room, looking at the way he said ''that one didn't age very well'' or ''ughh, wayne malik..'' who is he to talk about zayn's upbringing? and to everyone in the comments trying to justify all the things he said, i think you need to stop because it looks embarrassing rationalizing a 30 year old man who has control over what he wants to say or not. personally, if i were zayn and saw my ex band mate talking about me even slightly in an interview, where there is someone i had a feud with, i would be so mad. i don't know it doesn't look like a real friendship to me.
