The spin in a normal kick gives the ball's trajectory stability. Just dropping it and letting it float down makes it incredibly difficult to catch.

If it was a regular kick would be impossible to regulate the height, it’s not ideal but can’t rly think of any alternative

@@mattdavison3717 no reason why the forwards can't do the same challenge. I'm sure they are required to catch high balls right? They do everything the backs do, maybe just not kick goals. But then there was this one guy named John Eales.

Above a certain height, the ball will always be at the same terminal velocity when it reaches ground level.

Yes but the difficulty in catching a high ball isn't just about velocity, it's about timing and getting in position. Longer fall more time for the ball to move around.
