My mother tragically and obviously unexpectedly passed away from Covid-19 in July of this year. I just inherited and moved our family heirloom baby grand piano from her house to ours. I found a transcription online for this piece and am slowly learning it. Super crazy challenging for me, but it’s such an amazing piece of music - it keeps me motivated!! Also makes me think of my mum and how happy she’d be to know I’m playing it.
Something about this makes me sad. I think because it's just Jaco and a piano, playing quietly, then he looks at the camera for one of the last times in his life.

There's a transcription of this particular piano performance out there. Fun to learn but slow going to read and make sense of with that many accidentals.
Jaco is the the embodiment of a musician. You can be shredding lines and make music as complex as possible (uhumh Jacob Collier), but making a melody and choosing chords that touch you like these, is what makes Jaco a genius. It’s complex, but just the right amount of it.
Yes. And his family was famous before he became 'Jaco'. He was named after his forebearer, John Francis Pastorius, one of the early abolitionists and co-founder of Germantown, Pa. Cool stuff.
Jaco Pastorius could do ridiculous things with his fingers. There are photos of him with both thumbs bent backwards, the other way yeah! And the reach of his fingers was unbelievable. Kind of gives you a head start with a long scale Fender jazz bass which you’ve turned into a fretless by chiseling out the frets and filling in the holes with epoxy resin then sanding it down to a smooth playing surface. What a monster he was.
