Have you tried Book Track or Book Buddy? I currently use Library Thing, but I have over 1000 books and it is suuuuper slow now. Looking for something can keep up with a large library.

I'm so glad it was helpful! I am hoping to make an updated one this summer because Libib updated their app and it is a bit different.

@@themaecave5550 Hi Maegan! Nice! In my case I was actually trying to decide between Libib and GoodReads, and I am looking for a free version. I have scanned all my books in both platforms (using their respective mobile apps) and I was testing them out to finally decide. I noticed that Libib find more books and scan faster than GoodReads. I also like the interface of Libib. After I scanned all my books I was up to organize them in categories. But then I came into something that for me is a dealbreaker: The free version of Libib app only allow us to edit entries one by one. So, it makes impossible to organize the my personal library. How do you deal with it? Do you have the Libib Pro version? In GoodRead we can "batch edit" and it is so fast. So, basically that's how I dropped Libib and I am using GoodReads.
@themaecave5550

@@mirosoares Ooh I see. I never thought of Goodreads because I don't like to use it for this purpose. I have the free version of Libib and it has been good to me so far, although I don't like the updated interface as much as the old one. It is just not as intuitive. Also, I don't tend to do batch edits unless I am deleting things from my library so that is not a deal breaker for me. The big thing for me about Goodreads that I hate is that every shelf or tag that I add has to be based in the original three shelves that Goodreads has made: Read, Want to Read, and Currently Reading. Any books I would add to a shelf I made also has to be in one of those shelves and it is very frustrating. I do have the app and I use Goodreads to track my reading progress, but I would really like to switch to another platform for that purpose. I just haven't had the time to properly try out other sites I have found (besides Libib and LibraryThing), but hopefully soon I will be able to do that. Once I do I was planning on making a video series to compare Goodreads to similar websites. I honestly just might make a library on Libib solely for books I want to read so I can leave Goodreads altogether. Plus, if I do that it would be easy to move any books from that library to another one when I acquire it to read or own.

@@themaecave5550 I understand you point. For the other app, I have installed and tried several during the last weekend. And none of them as more interesting for my purpose as GoodReads. There are some interesting paid app though (like Leio, Bookly or SkillMentor) but I am not looking of an app that would require monthly payments. Well, thanks again! Good luck with your projects!

I do find mass editing behind a paywall annoying, but I guess they are trying to snag first time users to the pay plan since they will need mass move the most if they have a ton of books to add.

Just took the plunge this past weekend, with a cheep wired barcode scanner my wife and I cataloged 525 books! The books were randomly 1n three areas at home and are now browsable and searchable in LT. My favorite part is that the books are now grouped (mostly) by genre which going forward will make it easier to put hands on specific books, another additional benefit is we have rediscovered some lost or forgotten gems.

You would download a CSV file from your current site and then upload it to your new site (you can do this with Goodreads too). support.libib.com/support/import-a-csv-file/ help.goodreads.com/s/article/How-do-I-import-or-export-my-books-1553870934590 www.librarything.com/export www.librarything.com/more/import

It might be a silly question but can you put a library in a library
@themaecave5550
@themaecave5550 3 года назад
Not a silly question, but unfortunately you can't technically do this on either site. If you choose to arrange by title though, you can always start a certain set of books with the same beginning which will organize them together within the library. For instance I do this with series, and title them like this - Harry Potter #1: Sorcerer's Stone, or Harry Potter Book 1: Sorcerer's Stone. Then all of those books are under H for Harry Potter.

@themaecave5550
@themaecave5550 3 года назад
@@amberfranklin8382 Okay. I hope organizing it like that will help you. You could also make more libraries, but with smaller quantities on each and then title the libraries accordingly. Maybe have a library for each letter of the alphabet to organize the titles, that way you don't have one long list to go through, but rather many short ones.

Wonderfully informative. Thank you for taking the time to do this! I do have a couple of questions: (1) my friends and I publish poetry chapbooks/full-length works, or generally collect books that may not have data on such sites. I'm leaning toward Libib, but is there an ability to scan a book into the database itself, an option to just create it for one's personal library, or neither? (2) Can Goodreads be imported?
@themaecave5550
@themaecave5550 2 года назад
Libib and LibraryThing both have barcode scanner and manual entry, so you can add any book you want even if it is not already in their databases. You can do this on the app or desktop version for either site. Both sites on their desktop versions have an import section, with Libib having a CSV import and LibraryThing having multiple (specifically Goodreads, CSV, webpage, and a couple other options). For importing from other places LibraryThing definitely has more options, but CSV should do just fine for your needs. Both websites have free versions so I highly suggest just making an account for each one and trying it out for a time to see which one suits your needs best. I hope this helps!

Although this is a couple of years old, I find it helpful. In fact, I spent a few hours until late into the night to create a couple of libraries in Libib. I have a couple of questions and answers from its site are geared towards the paid version. If you are checking this, I wonder if you could answer them: 1) When I publish a library, I can only see the book covers with no description of any sort. Is this because I am using the free version? 2) With the published libraries, can a user (not me the creator) search for an item by title or author? I would really appreciate it if you would answer my questions. Thanks a million.

Hi! I'm glad this video is still helpful after a few years. LibraryThing really hasn't changed at all, and Libib free version has only had minor changes. In regards to your question, I do believe you need the paid version but I have never had it. Based on what I have read, the paid version (pro) is geared towards sellers and public use (bookstores, libraries, etc). Here is a link to the Libib website with a comparison of the free vs paid: www.libib.com/pricing Libib also has a youtube channel and a good help line, so try using those as a resource. I hope this has been a helpful answer. :)

Oh dear! I so need the information contained in this video as I want to catalogue my personal library so that other people can benefit from it and use it, but I had to abandon the attempt after about 12 minutes or so. You speak so quickly that to a UK listener you are incomprehensible much of the time. And you speed along as if we are all familiar with the layouts of these systems. You don't give us time to look carefully at a screenshot and work out what is what. I know one can click on stop, but eventually that becomes so incoherent that the whole thing falls apart. I also found that I could not increase the volume however many times I pressed the button on my speaker and I had the volume slider pushed right over to the right anyway. I suspect that Library Thing is just what I am looking for, but would love to know how it works and how difficult it is to use. I shall keep looking. Presumably they have a website, maybe even tutorials on YT? I would be very grateful if anyone can give me a link to anything simpler and slower.

I'm sorry that my video didn't work out for you. Unfortunately, I made this video five years ago and do not plan to remake it. Both Libib and LibraryThing have desktop websites in addition to their apps, all of which I have linked in the description of this video. LibraryThing is more difficult to use than Libib but mainly because LibraryThing allows for many more options you can add to each book. LibraryThing also has a giveaway section for books and a social section as well. I just did a simple search in RU-vid for "LibraryThing tutorial" and found some videos. At the top of the list is a playlist of tutorials from LibraryThing itself. ru-vid.com/group/PL5TMrN56GuquglgIMgAOtD4o9Lu84cF_m&si=c0rxrRBgZudtLu_h I wish you luck!

I completely agree. I think YT should have US or UK flags to sign which brand of 'English 'is going to be used, because to me so much US English is incomprehensible. My library has now topped 2,000 volumes and I urgently need to catalogue it. I am combing through YT listings, but so far haven't found anything that I can follow. It's terrible. Maybe there is a book on the topic?! Any suggestions anyone?
