More than just a building, the Library of Birmingham (LoB) designed by Mecanoo is a People’s Palace, a centre for learning, information and culture that unites people of all ages and backgrounds. The design extends the space of the street indoors.

Programme: BREEAM Excellent 35,000 m2 library with adult and children’s library, study centre, music library, community health centre, multimedia, archives, Shakespeare Memorial Room, offices, exhibition halls, cafes and lounge space, roof terraces, new shared auditorium (300 seats) with neighbouring REP Theatre, renovation of the REP Theatre, interior design and urban plan for Centenary Square.
Awards: Selwyn Goldsmith Award for Universal Design - Civic Trust Award 2015, Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award 2015, Architecture Podium International Award 2015, RIBA Stirling Prize nomination 2014, Winner BBC Britain's Favourite New Building 2014, RIBA National Award 2014, RIBA West Midlands Building of the Year 2014, Architects’ Journal Building of the Year 2013, Commendation for significant contribution to Town Planning in the West Midlands by Royal Town Planning Institute 2011.

A lot of public money spent. Great new facility, so it's a shame that the opening hours have been reduced due to Government austerity measures.

Why is it called the " the Library of Birmingham" Is the airport called "the Airport of Birmingham"? Who speaks like this?

It is just a name for the Library like Birmingham Airport a short while ago was called Birmingham International Airport as is now just called Birmingham Airport.

Inside is decent. The exterior is trash. It's a box with a fucking chimney. Shitty modern architecture strikes again.

So what would you like it to look like a concrete box or an upside down concrete pyramid like the last public Library in the City Center or the ugly old library, but it seems nothing pleases people.

@@robertozeladarodriguez5321 This new Library is the largest public Library in Europe and looks nothing like a Box !!, it is definately not ugly on the outside and is far superior to the last Central Library it replaced and definately better than the old original brick victorian Library, the inside is vast containing the largest collection of Shakespears works out side of London and a roof Gardern and wgen you see it in the flesh it is an amazing looking modern building

@@peterwilliamallen1063 "I functionally highlight it; I know it's the largest and the importance of the books it contains, but unfortunately, its exterior objectively doesn't fit into its surroundings. They're boxes with a metal framework.

@@robertozeladarodriguez5321 Concidering you seem not to live in the UK, you don't know much about our library and where it is situated, it is the largest municiple library in Europe and it actually does fit in nicely with it's sarroundings and it looks nothing like a box even if it did most buildings are built like boxes and the Central Library it replaced was a concrete structure that was like an upside down pyramid, sorry as a Brummie it is a manificent looking building that fits in well with it's sarroundings in Birmingham
