This is truly legendary, I’ve never seen a home library collection of this size, not by a long shot, and the gaming room is an absolute dream as well. Wow, brother, just wow. So many books, games, and tobacco - so little time!!
What an amazing book collection you have David. Truly amazing. Mark Twain said that " a man who doesn't read has no advantage over a man who can't read". Thank you for showing us you library. Wonderful Take Care ~ Gary ~
What a splendid library! At long last, after years of an itinerant existence, I’m now in the process of collecting all my books under one roof. At present my “library” looks like the epicentre of a direct strike, but I’m working on it. You’ve inspired me, and I hope one day soon to have it as squared away as your own. Thanks for inviting us into your home. Warm regards from Greece!
David, what a magnificent library and retreat not to mention that crowning touch, the game room. Your 'new' reading area is going to be awesome - sort of the ultimate nook in the bookstacks. It reminds me of finding a remote corner of the college library to study. The pipe and chess corner is inviting - also a great place to enjoy a pipe and libation with a friend. Thanks for the tour 👍 All the best for many more contented hours of reading, gaming, and smoking - peace
WOW, David! Your library is WONDERFUL! Thank you for the tour. You have a VAST collection of religious writings. I am a deacon in a Southern Baptist Church. I would love to sit down and discuss so many things with you. I have six children. My 17 year old son LOVES the Rangers Apprentice books. I read Harry Potter to my six year old daughter every night. I just started “Where The Crawdads Sing” on my dear friend, Sir John Pounder aka Dale Piper’s recommendation. God bless, Cliff
Sir, what an impressive library you have. I love to read as well and I thought I had a lot of books. Mine wouldn’t fill up but a couple of your racks top to bottom. It’s so cool that you don’t have a television or any other electronics down there (computer doesn’t count). I’d have to have someone bring my meals to me because I’d never leave there. The gaming room is an excellent idea. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
I've been watching for quite some time and really love your content. This walkthrough is so inspiring. I have a deep love for reading although I rarely find the time to read. I've been collecting books though any time I can. Guess it's kind of a retirement plan 😁. Thank you so much for sharing and please carry on doing so. Take care. Greetings from Greece.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I hope to get back to creating content this week. I subbed your channel and hope to increase my understanding of the Greek language by watching. Blessings.
That is surely impressive. I have heard of TAD and PAD, but now I have seen BAD (book acquisition disorder) and you have it Bad :) I lived many years in a one library apartment, slept on the couch so I could turn the bedroom into my library, about one wall of yours, hehehe. Thanks for the tour. Take good care, Stephen
The Codex came from a friend of mine who work in publishing when I did. We traded books from time to time which was a great way to obtain some unique books.
Wow! That is incredible! I would love to smoke a pipe, find a corner, and read theology. (I actually set down Mere Christianity and my pipe outdoors to watch this.) Makes me excited for future videos. Would love to hear more about your favorite theologians as well as recommended fantasy books.
Thanks. Just watched you video on Mere Christianity, which I recently read again. Wonderful book. We'll have to connect and talk theologians and fantasy. Amazing how the two sometimes meet in certain authors.
Hi David, I've got a lot of work to do to catch up with all the videos I've missed this summer, and when I saw your epic video photo thumbnail, I decided I had to start with you! I'm impressed with your library! I"m terrible at chess, but I'll come play a game and smoke a pipe!
DUDE!!! I AM SO FREAKING JEALOUS!!!! Your library and gaming room areas are EXACTLY what I want when we finally move out of this blasted condo! Real estate costs here in Naples FL is RIDICULOUS!!! $200K for a little 2 bedroom condo is so CRAY CRAY! Oh well, when we finally retire and sell and move to a city with a more affordable cost of living we’ll be able to build our dream home like yours. I cannot wait! I LOVE D&D but no one to play with here! So how many volumes do y’all have? Oh, and YES I LOVE the Rangers Apprentice series! I have all the hardbacks. I also have the Brotherband series by Flanagan as well as The Lost Stories. Wonderful and fun stories! It’s so fun to see someone that has read all the same fantasy and mythology/religious books that I have also collected. I’m a Freemason for many years so I have a lot of Masonic related texts which includes a lot of religious stuff. Hey do you like the mythlogian Joseph Campbell……his mythological writings are amazing. Well, SWEET! So FUN seeing your Sanctum Sanctorum! You and your wife must be such an interesting couple! Much brotherly love to y’all David and thanks so much again for doing the tour!
We purchased this house as a foreclosure about ten years ago and have been slowly remodeling it ever since. Long process but it's finally coming together. the Flanagan series you mentioned we have read. In fact, those are some of my wife's favorite books. Playing D&D, or the game Lore I created, has been difficult over the past year but I'm thinking of offering an online game using Fantasy Grounds Unity. Wonderful software and very powerful for gaming online. If you interesting in joining I'll put your name down and contact you when I have the campaign ready to go. Also, Joseph Campbell is a great writer. We have several of his books in the Myth and Lore section behind me.
I rarely get envious but man that is a gorgeous site (minus the migraine inducing fluorescent lighting) the only books I get to read right now are the bearenstein bears and little kritter. Keep up the good work I would love to hear more Bible history in the future!
The lighting is something I'm trying to fix. Once I finish putting trim on the shelves I hope to remove the fluorescent lighting in exchange for some type of Edison bulbs perhaps.
This is an awesome library, I'm a huge fantasy, apologetics and theology fiend. I read ranger's apprentice years ago and it's really underrated. What system do you play? I love the seating area in the room with the TBR shelves
I've played all versions of D&D as well as Pathfinder and some secondary systems like Traveller. About five years ago I developed my own system (D20 based) called Lore. It has some unique game mechanics and has received some good reviews at several gaming conventions I've presented it at.
That. Was. Awesome! Did you build a lot of those bookcases yourself? I’m now thinking about how to reconfigure my basement into a similar library setup. We have bookshelves all over down there but nothing so… perfect.
The shelves are individual units that I screwed together and have begun to place a molding on the front. Still need to add molding to the front of the shelves themselves. When you get yours' done put a video up. Would love to see it.
I have a few books that were published in the mid 1800s but they are on history and are of no value. I picked them up at used bookstores over the years. I typically obtain books based on content/topic not edition since first editions can be expensive. Would love to be able to buy some of the leather bound editions that are available on the market today.
It took several years and I worked in various bookstores and for different publishers through which I received free books. In addition, I just spent more on books than I should have.
Wow, only one word correctly explains this. EPIC. I absolutely love your library so wonderful. You have motivated me to get my books together. Are you a pastor by chance?
Hold on..We have to be long lost cousins. I’ve not met another theologian/book nerd and wargamer in all my travels. I’ll have to send you some photos of our setup. We’re currently building a study across the hall from the game/terrain room. This is inspiring!
The combination of gamer and theological book nerd is rare I've discovered. Everytime I attend GenCon I wonder how many there would be similar to people like us. That said, I have met a few...but only a few. I subbed your channel and look forward to seeing your set up. Blessings.
Unbelievable! Three questions for you sir, 1. Do you know how many books you have? 2. How many or what percentage of them have you read? And finally 3. How can I get one of your library cards? Again, unbelievable, thanks for sharing this with us. Take care and stay well my friend.
I estimate there are around 15,000 books and I've read over half, while many of the others are used for reference when I need them. That said, I do have several I've not read yet. But a library should always have books that haven't been read which gives me something to look forward to. As for a library card, I still need to classify them. But you're always welcome to drop by, read a book, and have a pipe if you're ever in the Grand Rapids area.
@@mythicalhistory 15,000, that is awesome. Maybe one day I'll get up to Grand Rapids. We can have that chess game and have a pipe (although I haven't played chess in about 30 years.) Take care and stay well my friend.
Though I'm seeing this 2 years after you posted, it gives me hope that I can finally get all my books together and organized. I have 10k myself, and am thrilled to see a larger collection than mine!
Where did you get pre nicean books ? Im a Theology major know at St Francis -OH ? I just tossed out the tv recently and starting a library despite getting a concussion in the detroit library many years ago .. .
I just came upon your video, and your basement set-up is freaking awesome!! But surely you don't really smoke around your books, do you? Please tell me you don't. Anyways, thanks for sharing, and I decided to subscribe to your channel.
I only smoke in the libarary during the winter months and only aromatics. That said, the aroma doesn't wear off onto the books. Thanks for watching. I hope to get back into making some videos and catching up with everyone.
me randomly watching this because i like books: oh nice collection of books. Oh wow he has more shelves. Wait he likes chess too? Wait he’s into miniature gaming too?? He likes fantasy??? Lord of the rings? Harry potter? Wow even more books! Swords!Omg he has a gaming room. Are you me? Books, fantasy, weapons, languages, mythology, history, minis, chess. I think the only difference is i also like videogames and vinyls.
