CLIP DESCRIPTION:
M (Robert Brown) revokes James Bond's (Timothy Dalton) licence to kill.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Timothy Dalton is better in Licence to Kill than in his first James Bond endeavor (The Living Daylights), but he still seems uncomfortable on the right side of the law. This time around, Bond is working on his own rather than on behalf of the British Secret Service. His American friend Felix Leiter (David Hedison), an agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration, has been seriously injured by drug dealer Robert Davi, and 007 is out for blood. There is precious little time for the usual Bondian quippery and directorial campiness, resulting in a marked increase in bloodletting (including the "implosion" of secondary villain Anthony Zerbe). A climactic highway chase involving an oil tanker and a helicopter is stretched slightly beyond its value, but is still one of the best action setpieces in any Bond film. Licence to Kill was a refreshingly serious change of pace for the series, albeit one that tended to lessen Bond's box-office value.

degree7 that’s what everyone always says. “Oh, he’s too dark, I’d rather have another decade of ridiculous Moore movies that might as well be Austin Powers movies” Timothy Dalton is the most faithful adaptation from Ian Fleming’s original works. @Greg Elchert Yes, he did pass away years before "No Time to Die" was filmed. However, in NTTD, there was a scene in witch the audience could see portraits of the various people who served as M in MI6. One of which was the original M, played by the actor Bernard Lee. My apologies if I did not explain it correctly.
@Shadowman820
@Shadowman820 2 года назад
@@roadwarrior144 Those portraits didn't really make sense though since Craig's Bond didn't start being a 00 until the start of Casino Royal so did the Bond adventures when Brown was M happen in the Craig Bond timeline ? How can that be if Bond just started at his job under Dench ?
@roadwarrior144
@roadwarrior144 2 года назад
@@Shadowman820 I agree. chronologically speaking, with regard to the Daniel Craig story line, it didnt make sense given that Bond (Craig) became a double-0 under M (Dench) when we had Bond (Moore) under Dench’s predecessor (Bernard). The thing I loved about Dalton was how he fleshed out the character by grounding him and making him more serious. You can feel the raw intensity as he speaks, like his emotions are boiling to the surface. He made Bond much darker and giving him realism. I always hated M’s explanation for not wanting Bond killed. If there were too many people around that you didn’t want to create a scene when a fight breaks out, why do you have several armed guards in the area. Also, that seems to me like such a bad writing choice, “too many people” was, and not something like “No, that’s my best agent and close friend who, despite going renegade, I don’t want killed because I care about him.” Besides that and a few other minor things, it’s a great and criminally underrated film.
@Thicc_Cheese_Dip
@Thicc_Cheese_Dip 4 года назад
I think M's response was implied to be improvised on the spot in order to show his affection for Bond: he didn't want Bond shot in the back while trying to escape (which his guards were prepared to do), so he made up the excuse of "too many people", as stating outright "that's my best agent and close friend, so don't shoot him" would've probably been cheesy. M's affection for Bond is probably the same reason why M delayed action against Bond's meddling until he was sure Bond had acquired funds for his personal vendetta, and even then, when M has Fallon (the MI6 agent tailing Bond in Isthmus) team up with the HK Narcotics officers to capture Bond, told Fallon not to kill him; Fallon could've easily had Bond shot (or done it himself, if you've seen the deleted scenes), but M probably stressed to him that he wanted Bond alive rather than dead (again, due to M having a sort of affection and sympathy for Bond and his plight).

That's precisely it, M was saying any BS to get them to stop because he didn't want to show he still liked Bond under all that officialdom BS.

I can understand Bond's attitude in wanting to avenge his friend's wife death and attack. But also M's attitude, he probably did care about Bond's feelings, but couldn't show it otherwise it's a conflict of interest.

I think you're right. Notice how, after Bond says "I haven't finished here sir" M replies "Leave it to the Americans...". That's a lukewarm conciliatory/understanding response, most superiors would say "yes you have, now get on a plane."

The Living Daylights was a success though, critically and commercially. So Dalton was definitely the right Bond and there's no reason it couldn't have been the right time for him. Licence to Kill is a very good film in its own right but it was out of kilter with the rest of the Bond series. In terms of violence, it did cross the line (for Bond). I always felt Dalton and Glen pitched it right with his first film. Audiences weren't ready for this darker and more grisly 007 film and the 15 rating didn't help its cause.

‘Then you have my resignation, sir!’ Timothy Dalton’s Bond looks like he always wants to quit the job 😂 And he and M’s relationship is probably the worst out of all the Bonds. He must really hate the job and his boss!

He doesn't. Hes just not in the best state of mind. Hes so angry, hurt & upset about what happened to felix & della. And how the Americans aren't doing much about it. They can't do much about the wife, della. Shes dead but they can hospitalise felix & search for the suspect, sanchez which is exactly what 007 does.

Can you blame him? What happened with Felix and Delia brought back really dark Memories to Bond's Head (aka, his Wife Tracy Bond being murdered by Blofeld.) So seeing something like that happen twice, and with his best friend in the field noneless, he wanted to make a difference this time, even it that meaned revenge.

And this is perfect. Its why had Dalton Bond came after Lazenby, it would have made more logical sense to see Bond far more callous and cynical, while keeping the charade of suave and charisma. He hates the job, but that's his curse. He's so good at it it probably gives him a sense of adrenaline and euphoria. He probably accepted he'll never find another woman like Tracy. And he's probably afraid of the heartbreak and agony if some like that was to happen again. Itd why his portrayal and him cursing the secret service all makes sense

How on earth fans rage about Brosnan but overlook Dalton is a mystery to me. This guy embodied James Bond 007. Sure he lacked rogers humor a bit and Sean's charm but license to kill was all bond's personal vendetta and he had ice in his veins. Dalton was grim, gritty, serious, no nonsense. A bond we needed after Roger. He should've done goldeneye.

Did they have to make M a complete jackass? He could have just dismiss Bond for killing Killife when he didn't need to (could have arrested him and nake him talk instead) and that he's ruining it for other agencies also trying to take out Sanches. You'd still cheer for Bond without it being forced.

M did fire bond for his stubborn & disobedient behaviour & revoke his licence to kill. But little did he know that Sanchez had a plan against her Majesty's government, to create a harmful drug organisation. I bet that's y bond gets his job back after he defeats Sanchez & foils his plans.

The Majesty’s secret service is more like the Mafia or the KGB in this scene. Trying to kill one of their top agents just for trying to do the right thing, wtf! Lol. I wouldn’t go work for these goons again even if things smoothed over afterwards for this kind of treatment.
@EditedAF987
@EditedAF987 4 года назад
Bond wasn’t really doing the right thing. The CIA and the Hong Kong Narcotics bureau were already dealing with Sanchez’s operation (which were both ruined when Bond intervened). Not only that but Bond was meant to be off on a mission in Istanbul which may have been important. It’s already been shown in the films that M has no tolerance for his agents going off on personal vendettas (see his lectures in Goldfinger or OHMSS) so this isn’t really a contradiction
