John those IRs are so good; I loaded up my MLC S_Zero 100 amp sim and was just playing for awhile, thinking how good it sounded, looked at the cabinet section and there was your LCFR IRs, already loaded from the last time I played and had forgotten to switch back my default IRs. The ears don't lie, man. Thanks for creating them!
I feel like the V30 really does have something special, but it's only in the mids. The highs were always fizzy and "closed" sounding. The Lichtlaern sounds like the "V30 but fixed" thing that everyone dreams of. The HESU Demon is another one of those.
Great job as always, John! You should have at least 10x the subscribers you do now. I like this speaker. It seems that the majority of V30 alternatives all focus on smoothing out the upper mid hump and by doing so end up sharing a similar, softer attack. I wonder how the Lichtlaerm (Warehouse, Mojotone, etc.) cut through after they break in themselves. As much as I've moved away from the V30, it's still a necessary evil outside the bedroom, though I have regulated them to the bottom of my 4x12's and vertical 2x12's (mixed with a variety of other speakers on top). Thanks for sharing your hard work with us!
Next test Fane F70 vs LCFR-150! Would love to hear that. I have the F70 mixed in with v30's in a stereo cab and they sound great together and by themselves.
Definitely wasn't prepared for that first statement :D Speaker sounds great, though I preferred the first mic setup Thanks for another great installment! I'm already curious for the full Lichtlaerm Audio setup!
Wow, there or real are some solid speakers, that sound way better than the V30, LCFR is one of the in my opinion. Awesome speaker! And great Demo as always.
I really appreciate your tests and videos. This new speaker sounds awesome. Much wider, more balanced, and bigger sounding than the V30. Although the V30 in the sweet spot sounds more mix ready. I found than my Fryette P50Es needed some EQ to tame the top end to really shine, so I think these Fane/Lichtlærm speakers will really show their worth after some post EQ for a mix. Again, thanks for all the effort you go to to share this information with us. It's not lost on me.
Great comparison, as usual!!! A lot of effort and thoughts put into these videos. I played the IRs a bit and to me, the LCFR-150 sounds very 90s metal-like. There is a certain grittiness and nastiness in the mids, that i like. It also reacts quick to palm muting over my Diezel VH4. I like it a lot and am curios about the price tag. I would like to see a shootout againt the Eminence Governor, which i also like, in the IRs at least. ;-)
You said the center is the sweet spot but when you moved it to the edge of the dust cap it made the V30 sound harsh and brittle. This thing sounds excellent! Thanks for the great video!
Cheers, buddy! That's the tricky bit about tone tests for me. There are no absolutes, just relatives. Moving targets. My favoutite V30 was my baseline and based on that I liked the center of the LCFR best but the reference position still sounded great to me too. Regardless, I am happy you liked the speaker and the video
The LCFR-150 sounds great. Not aggressive as the V30, a noticably less fizzy in the highs, but maybe overall a more pleasing sound? I still think I prefer the aggression of the V30, but there's also a reason why I'm gravitating more and more towards pairing it with other speakers, like the Creamback G12H-75. I'm getting old, John. That's the reason. There's no other excuse. I look forward to messing around with the IRs you provided.
Sounds great! Fane makes some of the best speakers out there for metal (even though not many use them) so I'm not really surprised over how good these sound.
I'm getting my amp from them today, and pre-ordered the cab. I have a 4x12 with V30s to go with my Mesa amp, so really wanted some variety for one thing, and getting a matching cab to go with the new amp is hard to pass up. Gonna have to wait another month or so on the cab, but I'm excited. Sounded great in this demo, more balanced than the V30 which can definitely get a little shrill at times. I also thought on the clean channel it sounded much more to my taste, I've always had trouble getting my kind of clean tone through my V30 cab.
@@lichtlaermaudio I'm a big fan of your pedals btw, and I'm very curious to see and hear your new amplifier. I don't know if you have plans of making a lunchbox amp in the 15-25 watt range, but I'd be VERY interested in that ;)
This actually sounds really nice, I haven’t loved most of the other competitor speakers that people put up against the V30 but this one in my opinion actually holds it own strongly
Not released yet - we just created the product page so people can look them up already! You can just sign up for the waitlist and you’ll get info as soon as they’re available!
Great job as always, I really liked this one, and I'm with you that it's hard to beat a good V30, but this is a welcome rival and addition, could make for some great blends too. Excited to try your IRs!
Reminds me of sort of an oldschool 70's Blackbacks, with a tighter low end/low mids, and a bit more highs after 12khz. Pretty sweet though! Didn't he say they were actually based on some old Hiwatt speakers?
Your channel is a absolute gem! Love it! Maybe you could check out the Jensen Raptor 100W at some point? There are no good videos out there, unfortunately :(
Sounds great!! Finally a speaker I'm excited for! Sounds a bit different but in a much better way than a "holy grail" v30, imagine against the crappy ones from the last 20 years 😂😂
Interesting. It made the v30 sound like most greenbacks do in comparison. Muffled and harsh. Yet at other parts the v30 was like having an equalizer board boosted in lows mids and highs that you could bring down at anytime to get the same sound as the other speaker.
Man, that would be awesome. I'm digging Fane speakers, I got an F70 and fell in love with it. This speaker sounds a little similar as far as I can tell. Keep up the great work, I love this shit🤘🏻
@@fattony6-string929 Thanks man! I appreciate it. I also have a few F70s here that, funnily enough, I bought from Daniel at Lichtlaerm. I plan to test those after the DV77 which is up next.
Wow, that is a GOOD sounding speaker. I'm trying really hard not to buy any more speakers because I'm sort of drowning in them, but this has made it significantly harder to stick with that :)
I don’t have a good monitoring environment for final judgement, but this speaker kind of sounds like a T75 if it didn’t suck and was way more musical. Bit broader in the harmonics, and less focused than the V30. I feel like this could make it more open to tone sculpting, which means it fits the amp it was designed for as it’s a bit of a tweaker’s amp.
Look Ma - No Tone control ! Great focus John , so I won't have to ! V - 30, much more midrange focused, LCFR , very much in the Electro voice Zone ! I prefer the V 30 in the two by 12.
I like how this company has flavor to it. All of its products could sound like a dog in a blender but just visual makes you want to try almost everything.
Had to watch it on my phone 4 hours ago. So here I am again after listening to it on my monitors. Sounds really great. Smooth but not dull at all. That's awesome. Do you know what kind of magnet it has? 150 Watt but lighter than a V30 is interesting. Thought of getting a pair of these to put them in x pattern in my main live cab (an Engl Pro 4x12") but was afraid it would be a bit much since it's already my most heavy cab :D
I'd be curious to see if they come out with a 16 ohm version of the LCFR-150. My current speakers are all 16 ohm, so it would be easier for me to swipe it out, one for one. So far, it's a pretty sounding speaker, but man, I do love me some vintage 30s.
We’re checking comment sections for demand all the time 😊 there’s a MOQ of 300pcs per impedance so we need to see if there’s enough demand and we’ll definitely do it!
Yeah, I figured that it's spec'd for what you needed it to do. No clue how popular 16 ohm speakers are in the community at large. Regardless, it's pretty cool that you developed a new speaker for your amp.
The Demon is far brighter than the LCFR and seems a lot closer to the V30 to me in design. Given their different characters, I'd say they'd blend well together in a cab. I may have to do that test
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne That would be very interestig! I want to be audible and as clear as possible in studio/live situations as I already play death metal with lots of gain on drop B/A. This speakers seem like a good option for it 🤘
This is a very well done comparison of the two speakers, thank you! The LCFR sounds awesome here! Really looking forward to the comparison between the F70 and LCFR as my Bogner cab currently has a mix of V30/F70 and I might be looking to change that to a V30/LCFR mix instead... Then again I might just go full retard and get a Lichtlaerm 4x12 loaded with the LCFRs if the price with shipping in EU isn't too bad 😅
Next speaker is the DV77, then the Fane F70s but I probably want to do a pedal and an amp video between those two so it might be another month, month and a half. Sorry, I'm putting these out as fast as I can 😂
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne no worries, and no rush! I know I'm getting some new Fanes to try out, just want to know how many! Haha I really like their old speakers, they don't break up in the same way as celestions and, as a result, metal tones sound cleaner, less fizzy. 122/190s for clean (especially mixed with g12/50s) through an el84 amp and the 122142+122234 mixed together for metal through a 6l6 monster (I find those older speakers really sound best when you mix the bass and guitar speakers together). Curious how the new offerings sound as I haven't listened to Fanes newer than the mid 70s. Wondering if they've voiced them to be V30s alts/clones and if they still have that old fane clarity to them
The LCFR has a lot of 7-10k content which adds a lot fizz, where the V30 has a steep rolloff from like 5-6k. The LCFR also has less 2.5-6k than the V30 so it has less cut in a mix. So basically these two speakers seem to have the complete opposite high end from each other. I would personally not use the LCFR on its own. Either go for a mix with the V30 or go with the V30 on its own
wow, Really nice speaker, seems to have a bit of T-75 vibe which a like, on first samples sounded far better than Celestion, but with room mic, to my surprise, I liked both(BTW OC818 is amazing, I use to have two of them, I remember that Royer R121+ OC818 sounded really nice together. Fane produces some great stuff, this speaker is very similar to ideal metal sound that I have in my head.., reminded me governor a bit, maybe less raw and more refined and precise than Eminence(kinda like different types of beef stake: Rare(Governor) Medium (LCFR) Over cooked(V30). the fact that it handles 150 watt, and lightweight, is really impressive. I think Celestion V type has similar vibe and also lightweight. I can clearly see why you like it. BTW what's up with that FL cab behind you? Did you buy Diezel cab or it's ENGL? Edit. I really like speaker, went back and compared it to your governor video. Like them both equally, I guess depending on amp, cleaner refined amp+cab(Diezel , Mesa Mark Fryette) I would prefer Governor, for more dirty amps like Marshall, Bogner Ubershall I would prefer cleaner LCFR, for Rectifier and 5150, I guess classic combination of Mesa cab with V30
Cheers Daniel! Thanks for the comment. I think I need a different cab for room samples. The fact that there is a second speaker in there, even when electrically disconnected won't benefit the sound. It's cone is moved back and forth by the internal pressure of the cab. The cab behind me is my Engl 412 XXL. The heaviest thing I own that isn't a cab. Would love to own a Diezel 4x12 at some point but I'm running out of space and those Lichtlaerm cabs look amazing
I might have to get or build a propper over sized 1x12 for that type of test. the cone of the disconnected speaker still flaps around. I'm afraid that impacts the response in a disadvantageous way
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne If it's a stereo cab you can short the other speaker with a shorted plug in the other speaker input, that way making it not vibrating. I've done it a couple of times and it makes a difference. But be careful not to use excess volume, maybe could damage the cone paper, never happened to me though.
That's a tough question. I have not tried this and a K100 in the same cab yet but I might. The K100 is another favourite of mine. Off the top of my head, I would say that the LCFR is more balanced sounding and easier to mic up.
Sounds sick. I've become more interested in Fane and Laney speakers for a more unique sound. This is definitely it's own thing. Next speakers: the Hypocrite and Dick Move...
It’s honestly an entirely different design: Fane suggested the F70 at first and while its a great speaker it just wasn’t what we were looking for - I actually sold the sample F70 to John so there’s a chance of hearing them compared at some point 😊
@@lichtlaermaudio I want to hear that comparison because I have a F70 that I LOVE in my cab paired with a Swamp Thang, but I'm kinda tired of the Swamp Thang and am looking for a good pairing for it.
I run my 5150 50 watt into a 4x12 that is actually a line 6 cheapo and it sounds great! I didn’t compare it to one of the evh cabs made for it or anything else so maybe it can sound better?!
I dunno dude. If it sounds great to you, then why fix what isn't broken? If it's not one of the V30 loaded Line 6 cabs, you could try and get one of the more affordable/sleeper V30 cabs like Crates, Line6s, Hughes & Kettnes, etc.
are you a native german speaker? because of the way you pronounce lichtlärm. anyways, i wonder how the LCFR would sound in a front loaded 4x12 cab x-pattern with 2 Celestion K100 speakers. daniel told me in a answer to a comment that he dislikes frontloaded cabs, despite that i think this speaker might be good for front loaded.
Almost. I've been speaking German since I was a child, so close enough. I have no doubts this speaker would do well in a frontloaded cab too. I may chuck it in my Engl 4x12 to hear for myself. Recently though, I am liking rear loaded cabs more than front loaded ones too
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne oh that's cool, i grew up bilingual too, and learned english later in school. i'd like to use th speaker in my front loaded Diezel cab, but i also have 2 rear loaded marshall cabs, an angled one with v30s, i don't know the manufacturing date of, and a straight one with T75s from 1983. might be interesting either cross pattern in the diezel with the K100s or in the angled marshall with the v30s.
@@lichtlaermaudio would you be able to post the thiele-small parameters of the speaker, please? At least the more basic info like sensitivity, etc. At least the sensitivity, which is important to know when mixing speakers, so how close is LCFR to the v30 sensitivity? Appreciated!!
@@JohnWikuthey're posted on the product page! Just noticed I had the font color set to black which is not the best choice on a black background :D changed that now! It sounds great and full but there's also something I hate in the 5-6khz region.. that fizz up there.. the V30 sounds narrower... while the LCFR sounds broader with extended body but also top end.. but that's nothing a bit of EQ cant take care of...
That's a song I wrote for my band at the time that had the working title "13 Nipples". I give the most ridiculous working titles I can think of as I tend to remember the songs better that way and around the time of writing this I had heard that Opossums have 13 nipples.
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne I should add. Considering these were made by Fane (which are famous for the Hiwatt tone), using the Hiwatt Fane Purpleback 150W speakers may be an interesting pair with it as well...or even using a Hiwatt Amp with the LCFR-150 with some pedals, you may have some fun with it. Russian Circles use Hiwatt for their Doom/Shoegaze/Black Metal tone they have. I am personally a fan of Fane speakers and a massive lover of Hiwatt (dream Amp is a DR103). Great video btw
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne oh sure, the lichtern is good, no denying that. And depending on the setup and mix could be better. Just saying my initial thoughts. I do think they are going to sell a good amount of these!
