Michelle and I were introduced to LIDL (pronounced Leedle) about six months ago. LIDL is a German owned discount grocery store and we LOVE it. Lots of people I talk to have heard of it but never been in one so we though we would give you a tour of our local store!

They don't charge you a Quarter, you get the quarter back when you return the cart. It saves a lot of costs and educates lazy people

Exactly, common thing in Germany since 25 years. By the way: Trader Joe’s = ALDI

It feels so weird to see someone in America walk into a store and feel like they're walking into a store I'm familiar with at home. It's like seeing a Tesco in the US, just weird. Pretty cool though!

Absolutely? I lived in US and they have Aldi but far different quality than UK and Europe. Seeing eggs in fridge over there I never got used to.

Hello from Europe. In almost every town-city, there is a Lidl or Kaufland. The best supermarkets. Really good discounts, cashbacks. They have what I call left and right supermarkets. Left one is yours, when you entere bakery is on the left. And right supermarket is literally mirrored setup.

4:00 It's the same Layout here in Germany. After the entrance on the left hand is the bakery and right hand fruits and vegetables.

Trader Joe is a part of Aldi. Aldi in Germany is split in two (north and south), because it had been two brothers. Trader Joe is the brand of Aldi Nord.

Reminds me of Lidl store here in Czechia, Europe. They definitely look the same all over the world. It's like a safe harbor that reminds you of home wherever you are. Very popular in European Lidls are their themed discount weeks. Like you get an Italian, Spanish, German, Brittish, Scandinavian, Greek, Mexican weeks, and so on. Their home appliances and other tools are sometimes surprisingly good value. Maybe its the same in the US. 👍 It was fun to take a tour in American Lidl

These discounters have a significant share of wealth in Germany. As everything becomes more expensive, they aim to keep prices as low as possible.

Im pretty sure you already know this by now, but if not the „charge on the shopping cart" is almost always done in germany. Its not really a charge, since you get the money/ or your chip back after you put the cart back. The main reason is, so ppl always put them back where they belong. We usually dont have ppl who collect carts on the parking lot. Only if a lot of them are missing, or too many are at one spot in the chain. But usually after shopping ppl are used to put them back to their place. Greetings from germany!

Lidl is like Aldi. Years ago Aldi was left to 2 brothers by their father. They had some sort of disagreement and it was split in 2. One was Aldi. Trader Joe's is run by the same group as Aldi as well but run as separate companies.

@@kberlin85 a split is also considered a disagreement.. the real story is one of the brothers wanted to sell cigarettes, hence the split..also lidl is nothing like aldi and at the same time exactly the same.. lidl by far carries more name brand, is twice the size

It is the most POORLY run supermarket ever in my opinion because I often see fellow customers slam their goods down and end up leaving angry at the fact Lidl don't know how to run their business sufficiently.

2:42 It reminds you to Trader Joe's since Trader Joe's is the "Aldi North" company in the United States (or part of their group). "Aldi South" operates there under "Aldi" and they follow a similar store design like Lidl which is coming from their main competition region here in central Europe. And they recognized that this store design and offerings fill some gaps american citizens often have to deal with, like that they open markets close to bus-lines in so called "grocery-deserts" like now in Washington D.C. for example and of course to fill more of the gap of getting german foods which are, I know it from our relatives, seen as delicious extension. 9:53 The "Islands" have to be understood like In Germany there are just those two big players and a few less big which are more or less just for the local neighbourhodds in bigger cities. And every german household "studys" their leaflets of Aldi and Lidl the week before. That makes also sense since Germany is a much more decentralized country compared to the average in USA with thousands of settlements between 50 and 1500 people where no grocery store is located. So they all have to plan their weekly grocery trip with the car to the next city anyway. And then the Island offerings also usually fits to the season more or less and like 80 % of the Island products will be offered again in the next two or three years. So the whole result of it is that nearly every german household that needs one of the products is informed about this offer earlier or later and will buy it either this or next year in the season it belongs to. And for the impatient customers most of these Island Products are again offered in their online stores. So they get the maximum on customers for just few basic products. The worst on it is that I would say 80 % of the Island Products are really useful things of the daily use like a drilling machine or an electric kettle or a micro wave for a very good price/performance ratio. Store products are regularly proofed in Germany and compared to each other by some privat and semi-official examination offices like the "Verbraucherschutzzentrale" (Customer-Protection-Central). And the Lidl- And Aldi electric machines often reach high ratings (at least those of the Partner-producers in Europe. I don't know if their Partners in the USA reach a comparable quality, but it would make sense if they also implement the rest of the companys policy. Often they are brand machines which are just branded under the Lidl-Brand name for the lower price). So if your old microwave is broken and you follow this system of the regular "studying" of their leaflets and know about their offering-system you will definitely start waiting for Lidl's offer of the new micro wave instead of going immediately to any other store. :-D Sounds strange but it works if they just don't lower their quality.
