In the small Principality of Liechtenstein, an almost forgotten grain grows in what is probably the smallest field in the Alps: rebel corn, an old variety of edible maize with light-coloured kernels that was cultivated in the Alpine region for centuries.

For Annelies and Kurt Gerner, this corn is not only a childhood memory, but also an edible cultural asset that they want to preserve. For this purpose, they have founded a club, the Rebelbolla Club. The 12 members of the club cultivate the 8 by 20 metre field together.

They all come together for the harvest in October. Everything is done by hand: harvesting, taking out the seeds for the next year, sifting and chopping the corn stalks and defoliating and drying the corn cobs. For the harvest workers, roasted Rebel with apple and elderberry puree is prepared on the field oven, a Liechtenstein speciality. For the post-harvest feast, there is a Rebel corn casserole with vegetables and cheese to go with the roast pasture-raised pig. Annelie's grandson Andrin is 10 years old and the family's baker. He makes a Rebel cake for the harvest troupe.

So interesting. I always thought maize was a new world food. This region had maize before they were introduced to wheat? I would have never guessed it. The recipes are some I could never have imagined. Wow!

Lovely episode. Now I am perplexed. Look at these people. They use corn in everything and none of them are overweight nor do they seem to be suffering with diabetic. Yet, I’m told I cannot touch corn or eat ANYTHING with corn or potato in it. The end result after years of following such medical instructions: I cannot lose a pound of weight for nothing!
