This is definitely a hot topic that I've seen a lot of people talk about during and after S2 of Love Live! Superstar!! There has been a lot of discussion on how Love Live! is continuing to expand members and the consequences of that. Some hate that Liella! has grown while others love it. In this video, I go over how I feel about it and compare the two generations.

Honestly the gen 2 characters really did grow on me. Also I agree it makes sense for Liella to have more members since they’re a school club going through the years. Idk how they’re going to handle the plot and characters for s3 but I’m going to try to be optimistic about it.

i think that liella should of stayed 5 members bc it was almost like refreshing and different then the other groups like muse , aqours, and nijigasaki. they added the 4 new members it was almost overwhelming bc nijigasaki just added on to 12 and 5 was just different then the usual 9 or higher(that’s not a bad thing it at all) then adding 2 more just felt like adding members to this point and it was out of pocket. the only part of gen 2 i enjoyed was vienna due to her dark style of music which we haven’t seen a lot expect from yohane. regardless i do like gen 2 liella but not as much as i like gen 1 (this is just a personal opinion!!)

Two major reasons I think Liella should've stayed five are: 1) Line distribution - It is already a problem with Muse and Aqours where some songs didn't have proper line distributions probably because of the large amount of singers are in a group (most noticeably Wake up Challenger, Brightest Melody and Loveless World). With Liella, it could easily be remedied because it has less girls. 2) Screen time/Character development - With a small group of girls, there can be equal screen time and everyone can get opportunities to have develop as characters. Maybe show how some of the girls interact outside their school idol activities because I feel like I've always been seeing the girls in their school so much. Maybe have them perform lives in other venues to increase their discography and reputation (but then again, maybe there are rules that makes them unable to perform unofficial lives not involved in Love Live). In my opinion, Kinako, Mei, Shiki and Natsumi should've been in their own group and Love Live project that is a direct sequel to Superstar like how Sunshine was the sequel of the School Idol Project. Maybe have their charm be the opposite of what the standard school idol is perceived, with the shy and awkward Kinako who comes from the boonies, the delinquent-looking Mei and stone-faced Shiki with their intimidating visages that seems to scare off their peers and potential fans, and the materialistic Natsumi who only cares about making money. Unlike the other groups that has a "thing" to make them well-liked to their audience, this group of four doesn't have it and they have a much harder time getting their school idol career off the ground when their first live together ends in disaster (unlike how Muse, Aqours and first gen Liellas' first lives ended successfully). Their rival will be Wien, a solo school idol who's a year younger than them and from another country who sings atypical school idol songs to immediately capture the audience's attention. But then again, my opinions might not make any sense.

I’d agree with your second point if the character development for the OG 5 was actually executed well, but in my opinion it wasn’t. Kanon gets a good arc about overcoming her stage fright, Sumire gets some closure over her fear of inadequacy when she gets to be center, but the other 3 fall flat for me. Keke doesn’t really get any focus on her own character, Chisatos backstory felt shoehorned and didn’t really correlate with her reasoning in joining Liella, and Rens reason for hating school idols was really contrived. Most of the OG 5 outside of Sumire didn’t get anything better in season 2 (especially Ren-they did her dirty with the stupid video game sideplot) so I don’t think character development was ever at stake when more members were added.

Since I'm more on the live show and music enjoyer side I do really think their sound became at this best with the 11 members, especially since their subunits are so good. But you're super right about line distribution, Liella's emphasis on natural singing voices means they all sound super samey, and Watashi no Symphony just keeps getting worse. The 2nd Gen one at least split it up by year and gave Kinako the Center, but the 3rd gen one blends way too much together and it's impossible to hear individual voices.

Me personally, I loved the concept of 5 members. I didn't really mind when the 4 joined, but 11 members sound a bit too much. Not like I hate it, but I just preferred 5 members. Maybe we could've learned even more about the gen 1 Liella and their past in detail. I was especially curious about Keke and her relationship with her family in China. Though I'm probably not the right person to talk about it since I stopped following Love Live regularly after Superstar season 2

I'm kinda 50/50 on this, I'm really starting to like the newer gens but I still have thoughts on how liella would win LL or progress as OT5. The newer gen and the seiyuus are absolute sweethearts and amazing additions to liella but I still think OT5 is too legendary. For me personally I have a few nitpicks about s1's writing and the s2 was a total mess regarding the character writing (especially kanon's in s2), character development and how they paced them winning lovelive in general. It didn't feel satisfactory like muse or aqours' win so I hope that in s3 they fix all those problems (And even tho i am a giant Wien oshi I still prefer her as a rival + SUNNYPA DESERVED BETTER SCREENTIME) If they fleshed out the characters well in the anime or fully imply from the start that they were going to add new members then I would probably have liked the new changes faster, I will miss OT5 dearly but I'll still continue to support liella no matter what member amount

I wonder if the SunnyPa girls were supposed to join Liella or have a similar friendship like Saint Snow did with Aquors.. like you can kinda tell it was the plan when they dont have animated PVs (or well ones in full but Saint Snow did). But I kinda dropped LL a bit after Liella started so Im a bit out of the loop

Tch, here we go again. At this point it doesn't matter anymore with the group's final membership number confirmed at 11, but in my dearest wishes, I'm a staunch "5-member adherent" and nothing's going to change that. Yes, I'm aware that there were already some ominous signs during the latter half of season 1 anime where Kanon began to insert herself into several scenarios that shouldn't be too centric about what she's undergoing (besides putting the past demons behind her in episode 11), that and Ren's ENTIRE characterization (not digging into it here); but nonetheless if this OG core could be kept for at least another year until they beat SunnyPa & win the LL tournament, then the breathing room for 4 new members wouldn't be so insulting or controversial, but that's no longer an option in 2024. Speaking of the season 2 arrivals back in 2022, their entry into the group was incredibly ill-timed and completely knocked the group's initial dynamic off its course 2 months before season 2 started to air and no surprise, that show was the absolute WORST LL anime and the most disastrous piece of media this franchise has ever made, topping even the already infamous SIFAS season 2 storyline. If I have to rewind that miserable time seeing St.Kanon's omnipresence asserting itself over everything Liella achieved while disparaging anyone else as worthless, the clownish "president" who STILL couldn't make her purpose or even her presence count as a third year waiting to graduate these days... Oh wait, those are directed at 2 of the OG members, okay back to the now-2nd years. TBH, my opinion on them has never really changed, but if I have to rank them nowadays, why not since the bar has never been lower. NatsuMONEY: Hated her with a passion throughout all of season 2 and my 3rd least favorite Liella member overall (besides St.Kanon and the "president"). The only interesting aspect coming out of her was an apparent abundance of broken dreams that she couldn't achieve hence becoming a money-focused brat, a topic probably TOO cruel for the show to tackle hence why she's instantly brought under St.Kanon's wings and was relatively subdued until the last few episodes where she replaced Keke as the latest Sumire-basher. At least her younger sister (Tomari) appears decent enough... I guess. Mei & Shiki: Overall the least controversial among the arrivals, but at the same time there's also very little to talk about what they'd gone through and they certainly couldn't drag season 2 out of its ruinous mess. Also my indifference towards them has remained concrete even to this day. Kinako: Just a sad case especially when she did possess some quirks that should've been panned out better. I still remembered that it's an aggravating process seeing her getting forcibly promoted as Liella's deuteragonist, with the direction of stamping her mark being all over the place and her one time to shine (via guiding that gold digger out of her mindset) was hijacked by her most holy St.Kanon in the most blood-boiling way imaginable. But at the same time, she still ended up being (slightly) more likable than Ren, meaning I personally still have a miniscule glimmer of hope watching her having a shot at getting a redemption arc... If the upcoming season 3 doesn't screw her over even harder.

I think it should’ve stayed as five. It’s refreshing to have a smaller cast that the writers can flesh out not only equally, but COMPLETELY! Characters can go through different arcs and healthily develop like they should instead of being reduced to comic reliefs for the sake of having a bigger cast. That’s not to say I don’t like any of the newer members however. Kinako and Wein at least seemed like they were planned characters. The rest of the members I could kinda go without. I don’t think someone needs a reason to be a school idol (because that’s the beauty of being a school idol; any normal person can be a school idol), but the writers should flesh out their characters.

I adored the original 5 , it was a unique number meaning you could explore the 5 in so much more depth And of course there’s 5 sides on a star Then the other 4 came and the plot was kind of ruined It’s not that I don’t love the new ones , I do , I just wish they were in a separate group. I may be a bit biased as Kanon , Keke and Sumire are in my top 7 love live characters of all time , but still , I think they were just so much better as a 5 . Love this video !!!!

I would've preferred smaller additions, honestly? To me, Kinako still added something for the already existing characters, but Mei and Shiki feel very much like a pair and disconnected from the rest of the cast. It makes the Liella cast feel less... interconnected(?) like it did in the first season. Back then there was no clear-cut pairings for me, which I liked way more

Kinako should've been the one who recruited Natsumi. Shiki and Mei are alright, they can do better. But for the overall story they did not do much because i thought Mei is a KuuKaa superfan. KuuKaa being shot dead in the back two times makes Mei (and to an extent Shiki) a bit irrelevant. Chisato and Ren initially has very good dynamics, but it goes nowhere. And KuuKaa.....

Most of the Liella 9+ members haters are anime only. The staff has show multiple times that Liella is more about their real-life stuff. If you follow them in real life, it's LITERALLY impossible not to like the new generations. The second and third generations brought a fresh vibe to Liella, and their connection is amazing. Adding the third generation and seeing how the old members welcomed Saku-chan was one of the cutest and most wholesome things I've seen in all my years of Love Live. It's even weird to see a performance with just the first generation, it feels like they were incomplete. It's totally cool to criticize the anime choices, especially since the second season wasn't great. But people forget about the real-life side. Liella could even surpass Aqours in the long run, so I think folks need to check out their real-life stuff more.
@boeunursery4046

As a counterargument to this, the franchise Love Live has always gotten newer fans from animated materials due to anime having a vast audience. This was their moment to capture many new fans to support them, but they failed at that because of the number of characters on the show. I actually, don't mind them adding new members if they could handle the number of members properly, giving them good character development. I think this situation could've easily been solved if the team put 5-member Liella on the back burner, Maybe Sumire and Keke plot lines could still be added in but I really wanted them to use the season to put the 4 new members into the spotlight and get more character development. Maybe Kinako tries to leave the club due to her wanting to improve on her skills and have more self-confidence in herself when she joins again. We could've also had a plot line depicting Natsumi trying to get more money using Liella and leaving the group shortly after because she feels as if they are useless to her now. This could've helped Natsumi be an actual character within the anime and not just a gimmicky character. Natsumi could've overcome this by putting her love for money aside for the betterment of the group. Mei could've felt unworthy standing next to actual idols, Shiki could have done something more than be Mei's friend, imo... There's just so much potiental, and season 2 just seems to lack luster because their isn't any emotions because they never got the time to do that.

Someone said the more, the merrier..but I think the less, more focus..looks like some other popular anime music series like Bocchi, K-On! even if BanG Dream..in their anime series most likely just focus on the main character member that usually have 4 to 5 member, while supporting character usually will support them through the story..Liella should stay by 5, but support it by other to be just supporting character, like example others should becoming their rival group and stay remain rival..

It works for Nijigaski because they’re all solo idols, so each girl technically will still get a chance to shine, but as for Liella… adding 4 girls was a meh decision but I guess I slowly grew to appreciate each member overtime, but I kinda wish Margarete never joined Liella! Tbh. Tomari also seems to similar to Shiki atm so it has ne worrying. On the brightside… maybe it could contain some good Natsumi development?

I'm gonna take a few 'popular opinions' on why gen 1 is better than gen 2 and debunk them. *Adding four girls at once was overwhelming* This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. So you guys are saying you had no problems watching Muse and Aqours who had 9 girls from the beginning, but a group that introduces 9 girls over a longer period of time is too overwhelming? *Liella used to be unique with five members but they're not anymore now that they went back to the traditional nine* Liella introduced a concept that no other LL group did before, telling its story over the span of multiple years and showcasing how the group progresses as new possibilities open up to them. That certainly is unique. I could understand the argument from a 'number of members' kind of view, but it falls flat when you look at the big picture. *The group had such strong dynamics and the new girls ruined them* Okay no this is simply not true. Wanna know what dynamics gen 1 had? They had Kanon-Keke, Kanon-Chisato, Keke-Sumire... and that's literally it. I could argue the four new girls on their own have as much or more strong dynamics than gen 1. *The gen 1 girls are better singers* I'm gonna be brutally honest, adding more singers was something Liella absolutely needed. Kanon's VA's voice was getting destroyed due to being overworked, Ren (especially early on) was not always consistent, and Keke and Chisato sounded near-identical, to the point where not even the people who make the color coded videos could tell them apart. And singing-wise, the four new girls absolutely do not lose to the gen 1 girls. *The writing in season 2 was much worse* That is true, but some of y'all seem to think that the quality of a season is inseparable to the girls who were introduced in said season, which is not true. The unfair result is that the new girls get hate for things they had nothing to do with, such as Kanon being a great character in season 1 becoming a Mary Sue in season 2. *It feels the first- and second-years act like separate groups* While I admit this does apply strongly to Liella due to the subplot of the first-years having to catch up to the second-years which was strongly dragged out, this is something that happens in every Love Live group. The girls have the most interactions with girls who are in the same year as them (minus a few exceptions). Don't believe me? Name two separate times Hanamaru and Kanan spoke to each other at all. Oh and btw to clear up a misconception some people have, gen 2 does not just consist of the four new girls, it consists of both the new girls AND the gen 1 girls. Feel free to argue with me, friendly discussions are always welcome :)

**Counter-Arguement Point 1:** Personally I think your comparing apples to oranges here...The difference between Liella and Muse/Aqours is the fact that you KNEW what you were getting into when you first watched the show. You EXPECTED them to be a nine member group because of the intro/ the obvious hints ect. and that's what you got. With Liella it seems like they almost baited the audience in a way and they also excuted this idea pretty poorly. I feel like the best example of this idea done right is with sound! euphonium tbh because sure the second years/ first years don't have the most screen time but they stand out or have little devolpment in the background which they didn't do. **Counter-Arguement Point 2:** I don't think they excuted the five members MUCH better than the traditional 9 in my opinion... Not only did they make them stand out from the crowds of group that Love Live already has but it also had MUCH better character devolpment writing than this season. I don't the new 1st years but they are just executed so poorly when they had SO MUCH potential to be so much greater. Kinako questioning if she is good enough to be in the group due to her lack of abilities and inexperience, The connection between Mei and the other members feel distant because she views them as idols and not friends, Natsumi could be choose between her money and her friends and Shiki and Mei could break ties in their relationship for a little bit and she questions why she is even still an idol anymore? These ideas could've all been tackled but they weren't thats the issue. **Arguement Point 3:** I don't disagree with this take as a entity but the details with the dynamics i disagree with....competely. What you named were the strongest dyanmics with OBVIOUS character devolpment. Chisato and Ren was close due to them both being in the elite music program, Kanon and Ren dyanimic could be shown best in that episode were Kanon wanted to be student concil president due to Ren seemingly being overwork. The group of 5 were OBVIOUSLY close and that what made the giant gap in closeness between 1st years and 2nd years. **Counter-Arguement Point 4:** You're SO SO SO WRONG ABOUT THIS POINT... I'm so sorry but this is the reason why I even wanted to make this whole debate in the first place. 1st Gen is much better at singing because they use ACTUAL TECHINQUE when singing there voices sound so much fuller then 2nd Gen. (I'm doing this as a gen rating.) Kanon has a WONDERFUL tone when singing because she isn't forcing any pitch when she sings it doesn't sound nasally either, even though she has low stamina when singing and dancing which can cause her vocal damage which you are talking here... She uses techique and IS A GREAT SINGER. Keke and Chisato voices might SEEM really similar at surface level but they are different and you can here that difference too. Keke uses her throat when singing (that sounds harsh but its true.) Her tone seems extremely modified, she also extremely nasally. Chisato uses her chest when singing her range is just natrually higher up and if she is modifing her tone its slightly done because of the way she is projecting voice. Also, overworking happens with voices they need time to REST not more members they need to take care of their voice... espically when they are using their THROAT while singing. That can damage the vocal cord EXTREMELY fast. VOCAL RANKING Kanon (Overuses her voice) Sumire (Overuses her voice) Shiki (Overuses her voice) Wein (Overuses her voice & her tones sounds iffy to me) Chisato (Overuses her voice & Lacks Stamina) Ren (Overuses her voice & Lacks Stamina) Natsumi (Lacks Breath Support, Vocal Stamina & Overuses her voice) Mei (Lacks Breath Support, Vocal Stamina & Overuses her voice) Keke ( Sings with throat & Overuses her voice) Kinako (Vocal Stamina, Sings with throat & Overuses her voice) Tomari ( Vocal Stamina, Sings with throat, Breath Support & Overuses her voice)

@@lattegrande908 Point 1: You're basing your point on the assumption that the new members were a complete shock to everyone but truth be told, anyone who watched the anime should have seen this coming. Liella lost Love Live and they're obviously gonna try again. When can they do that? Next year. What will be different next year? They'll be in a higher grade and there'll be new first-year students. So what can happen? Some new students will join them. The fact Liella consisted entirely of first-year students at the time should have been reason enough to start wondering. People who were shocked by the newer members have nothing to blame but their own stupidity. Point 2: Now this is just not fair, you're making up plot lines that do admittedly sound cool but are not a necessity. The characters without these extra plot lines are already complete as is. I could also say Ai and Mia are not complete because they never fought over Rina. Sure, it'd be cool but it's extra, it's not a good basis you can use to find fault with a character. You have to remember that Love Live with its big casts and limited episodes just can't explore every single little possibility. Point 3: Fair enough, you make a decent point here. Point 4: Okay, I'm not even gonna try with this one. I have no idea what you're trying to say and I don't think you do either.

@@alpha-sama *Point 1* : The point that you're making is unfair. Their rival group Sunny Passions stayed a 2 member group for atleast 2 years and this was covered in the show. Sure, it's normal to want new people in you're club but if the group is already great why change it? They could've even stayed a 5 member group but they were ACTIVELY recruiting people to join. *Point 2* : What I was really trying to say here was that I wished that they focused more on the 4 girls then the 5 girls that we already knew. I wished that the 4 girls actually got their moment to shine instead of being gimmicky characters. There was plotlines that they could've used as well. I just want to know 4 new members and for what IK rn that isn't the case. *Point 4* : I'm gonna summarize this one because i don't wanna repeat myself but this was the main point that i wanted to convey 1. Gen 1 were powerhouse vocalist (as a general ranking) There voices was easily disgunishable and Most of them are better vocally then Gen 2 & 3 due to having better techique and vocal control. ofc their exceptions, like Wien and Shiki but Gen 1 had GREAT VOCALIST. 2. The difference between Chisato and Keke voices is power and techique. Chisato voice has a lot more power because she isn't using her throat when singing while Keke is doing that. 3. Instead of adding new vocalist they should be taking more breaks, to rest their vocal cords. Adding new members don't help the problem, it just making the process slower. I kinda rambled because I'm a vocalist myself but these were the points i was trying to make.

I think Liella is a victim of mismanagement, the distance between Liella and Hasu is very bad. they suddenly wanted to chase the vtubers and their initial focus on liella was reduced. Liella didn't even have a chance to get a 3D game. Liella's treatment is similar to sidem (but not as bad as sidem). a management error which resulted in fans feeling that Liella was the unlucky one at Love Live. As a fan of μ's, I feel sorry for Liella compared to other groups in Love Live...

There’s gen 3 from the real live Idol of Liella and they are not gonna be the usual 9 members (it’s 11 now!) Honestly, if we are talking about Liella, we have to take their real Idol Group(the seiyuu) into the factors here and not just strictly anime because they are the ones who also focus more on the “Real Idol” aspect of Love Live.

liella didnt really hook me until 2nd gen. all the og members by themselves were pretty bland imo, hasunosora did the small group dynamic way better

I think Kinako alone was a good enough addition.

I'm a rare one that likes gen 2 better, yes gen 1 is good but it is really cookie cutter. I love Sumire & Shiki equally I can't pick one over the other!! And then add Wien into the mix next gen and in gen 2 I love her character!! So yes I have 3 best girls for Liella for each gen. 💚🤍💜

I like that later new members joined the group. I didn't like the girls from the original cast - they were very boring. And the first-years are very funny and charming, bringing the anime to life
