On 19 March 2011, in conjunction with other U.S. Navy and Royal Navy warships, Florida fired scores of Tomahawk missiles at Libyan air defense targets as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn. The Tomahawk missile strikes allowed British, French, and allied warplanes to begin enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya, preventing Muammar Gaddafi from using his air force to attack rebels in his country. This was the first combat action for the Florida or any other Ohio-class submarine. During Operation Odyssey Dawn, Florida launched 93 Tomahawk missiles, with 90 effective, out of her total magazine of about 160 missiles.
Of the four Ohio-class SSGNs in the U.S. Navy, Florida was the only one that was available for use in Operation Odyssey Dawn since she was the only one that had been assigned to cruise the Mediterranean Sea. Some other Tomahawk missiles were fired by American surface ships and by a few Royal Navy nuclear submarines.
On February 15, 2013, the crew of the USS Florida were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation having "distinguished itself in action against the enemy" during Operation Odyssey Dawn in 2011.

I was a crewmember on that submarine when it was the SSBN728 in early 1998. I was part of the gold crew. Unfortunately I am in no contact really with anybody from back then. There was no Facebook, Instagram, etc. I wish I still had my Florida hat. It went missing during transition back to civilian life.

I was comparing my experience with garrison life in the Army of the 1980's. Except for field exercises it was 9-5 (more or less). Was wondering what 'in port' or shore duty life is like.
@douglasreeves9938
@douglasreeves9938 7 лет назад
wcatholic1 Well, inport on an SSN, you are probably in 3 section duty, meaning every third day you spend 24+ hours on the boat. Shore duty totally depends on where you are assigned. Anything from Recruiter to NPS to A School as an instructor to NSS Groton, CT. Many different shore duty assignments and their hours and demands vary greatly.
@wcatholic1
@wcatholic1 7 лет назад
For us, in garrison in was usually Mon-Fri 0600 to 1630-1730. An occasional Saturday if vehicle maintenance was falling behind or a big inspection was coming up, but that was rare. In the field its 24/7 under simulated combat conditions. We played in the dirt once a quarter anywhere from an overnighter to up to 10 days or so. Once a year we had a 30-45 day major exercise. This was long before the current wars and endless deployments. The op tempo was much more relaxed than now.
@stumpedii8639
@stumpedii8639 7 лет назад
we did 2-3 years on shore and 4-5 years at sea depending on your job (postal clerk, radioman etc) at sea we're on ships.. ships do not sleep.. so someone is ALWAYS on the ship. more time the more junior you are.. and less time the more senior (in rank) you are. the best hours i ever worked were 40 hour work weeks (shore duty) (but this does not include the time you had to study approx 4-6 hours for every hour you taught) (instructor duty) once qualified tho it was pretty much back to 4o hours not counting travel time or lunch... the worst time was 80+ hours a week for a year straight while assigned to a ship. m-f 12 hours, saturday 8 hours.. and 24 hours every third day. And i have seen some poor bastards work even more hours they were in port and starboard for a year (12 hours on 12 hours off). the navy unlike any other service except perhaps the coast guard, is the most time demanding.
@MrSheckstr
@MrSheckstr 6 лет назад
My dad was in the Navy 68-88 but he did his hitch on a carrier. There it while in port it was a “9-5” job too, except every 6th day was a 24 hour on the ship regardless of weekday or weekend though you were permitted family visitation time. Understandably subs have tighter restrictions. Another thing to consider is submarines have a blue and a gold crew so once the Blue Commander and Crew come in the Gold Commander and crew will start taking over the boat for the next cruise. At that point the Blue Crew will do dry land jobs, got to training and qualification schools, or get reassigned to other vessels, not necessarily subs Another thing that doesn’t get mentioned is subs operate on an 18 hour day where they will Man their station for 6 hours and have the next 12 hours “off” but that off time includes class and study time, any sort of unscheduled work in addition to rest and actual “personal time” and meals are served every six hours with cold breakfast options always available and usually some sort of cooked breakfast type food. So yeah you might have steak and pancakes

Since the boat was originally designed for a much different role (ICBM launch), I wonder if it's much larger and more expensive than it needs to be to fulfill its current role. Sort of like the battleships that long outlived their original reasons for being. Just wondering; I don't know.

bus114 I would equate it to when the Navy took its straight edge carriers that couldn’t take the pounding of modern jets and converted them to helicopter carriers for the marines and Used then for space vehicle recovery vessels in the 60s and 70s . John Texas Keep on projecting, it doesn't change the truth. It's funny, I'm only twenty years old yet I learned long ago to stop judging men by factors like their choice of language or beliefs, and start judging them by their strength, capacity, and character. When you do this, you will start to spot "diamonds in the rough," so to speak, as well as wolves in sheep's clothing. What I'm trying to say is...you're very good at sounding proper and coloring within the lines, but you're the last sort of guy we'd want on a boat. These paragraphs of yours mean nothing but "fuck you," but you're not man enough to come out and say it. You hide behind self-righteousness and allegations. So...at the end of the day, fuck you, John.

Food was OK but kind of boring. After my second patrol, we got a new MSC who believed in spending every freaking dollar on the crew. Food improved 100%. Steak, lobster, you name it and all served family style. Crew appreciated it and had a much better attitude towards the mess decks crew. the budget was probably higher for submarines.. you could eat as much as you wanted.. in the surface they restricted how often you could eat or how much. one thing that was prevailant tho in surface or sub.. was the quality of the steaks.. there is prime choice etc all the way down to cutter and canner grades of beef in the usa.. well .. the beef the navy got was roadkill grade.. there was so much gristle.. infections.. warts or whatever in the beef you had to eat around that stuff that wasnt meat to get to any real meat.. i skipped the steak meals. hamburgers(sliders) were 50% soybean. but they were edible. my favorite was chicken or turkey or pizza or shrimp or lobster or .. and this one was the best KING CRAB!.. but we only got the king crab when some politician or navy admiral visited.

I think submarines are awesome in every way however I think the sound bursts underwater are not good mainly because water is a much better conductor of sound than the air is so the decibel level of a rock concert could be too intense for marine mammals living in their marine environment. The NAVY will develop new technologies that will change this I am sure.

Marcus Reed - in the context of an Ohio class submarine, that segment of the video was a bit of a tangent. I understand the concerns about low frequency active sonar, but why they brought it up is a mystery to me. Because the Florida does not have that type of sonar.

The Navy tired of spending billions on Tridents and never utilizing them , so they have converted many to SSGN's. Tactical weapons that have many uses in skirmishes as opposed to the single purpose that Ohio class subs were originally built for: Extinction of the human race.... I served aboard the USS Henry M. Jackson for 4 strategic deterrent patrols. I went in as a hawk. I came out as a pacifist.

Dude, the four SSGN conversions were because of a strategic arms reduction treaty. We had 18 Ohydros, and the treaty limited us to 14 SSBNs. T-hulls rate a O-6. Always have since the Ohio. Typically it's his second (or occasionally third) command at sea. Best of the best. XOs are (usually) LCDRs on their PCO tour.

Overall a good and respectful video, but it's irritating listening to the constant mispronunciation and misrepresentation of so many persons, places, and things by foreigners (often Brits). This goes right down to not even referring to the crew members correctly - they are submarine - ers, not submariners pronounced like the Rolex watch. Come on, man.

How do you get 154 cruise missles on a boomer and still have room for the crew? I don't think so.
@jimfrazier8611
@jimfrazier8611 Год назад
Those 24 missile tubes are about six feet wide and forty feet tall. Even using two of them for SEAL stuff, that's still plenty of room. Hell, the first generation of Ohios had liners in the missile tubes because the full-size D-5 missiles weren't ready yet.

Can any ex crew tell me what was the flaw that let so many Russian subs track her and cause her reassignment?
@jimfrazier8611
@jimfrazier8611 Год назад
Not a flaw, a strategic arms reduction treaty. Those things are quiet, basically "holes in the ocean". The best way to find one was usually to listen for a lack of biological noise in one direction. We'd have to intentionally start our noisiest equipment so that other subs could begin tracking operations for exercises.
