Life After Caregiving: 6 Month Update 

I’m sure we all would like to know what the signs prior to her diagnosis were.Especially for those who may be going through the same things.

Theresa Pippen won the lottery in life. What a wonderful husband. I wish him the very, very best in this second phase of life.

Trey I lost my father on 8/2 to dementia. Took care of him for 11 long years. Still figuring out the new normal for myself.

I think re-engaging in your outdoor hobbies was a great idea - nature/outdoors is very healing when we have been through a chapter in your life like caregiving. Work helps. I'm so sorry to hear about Mia, glad you were able to get Blue to the vet for help. Pets help with grief too. Glad you're hanging in, these first holidays coming up may be tough, but just keep putting one foot in front of the other if you can. I'm glad you are in touch with John, I have seen his channel and you were the first person I thought of when I was watching him. I also am subscribed to Jason and Leslie's channel. Even when our own caregiving journey is ended, there are always other folks out there going through this and feeling hopeless and alone.

I’m a retired nurse and learned so much from you and Teresa. You honored your marriage vows and showed the world what love and commitment and respect are all about. Hi Trey, I am a completely random person who found your channel today. Your wife, Theresa, was a lovely lady and I am so sorry that she experienced Alzheimer's disease at such a young age. I have been reflecting on your channel and experiences all day. It is an incredibly cruel and unjust condition, awful in how it takes the identity of a person away. Having said this, I was very moved by how you supported her over this time, when she was at her most vulnerable. The dignity, support and compassion you provided her reminds me of all the good in humanity and shows what an incredible husband you were (love in sickness and in health). We all know the grief from losing somone you love so much never goes away forever, but I do hope you realise that you were a loving, tender, supportive and understanding husband. Thersa could have wished for no-one better. All of us here know this and just hope you do. Thank you for showing me the best in people and I wish you all the very best. Take care.

You’re remarkable. As a retired nurse I can understand the challenges you had as your wife’s caregiver. I admire your advocacy & support of others who are on their journey as you continue to adjust to being a widower.

My mom started showing very mild memory signs when she was 80. She was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment at least five years later. She stopped driving around 85. A decision she made on her own. She definitely told my dad for the next four years, where to turn and where to go. My dad was worn out as a caregiver by the time they were 87. He passed a few days before his 90th birthday this year. We sold the Florida house and moved my mom up north to an assisted living facility. She actually likes her apartment. She will be 90 in November. Sometimes she thinks my dad is there, but not often. She doesn’t cook, clean, do laundry, write letters or send cards anymore. She can still make phone calls, but has had a few mishaps. She goes to lunch and dinner late. Needs someone to give her medication. When she has eczema, she will tell me her forehead is itchy, and I have to let the nurse know to put cream on the spot. She can not remember to tell the nurse she is itching, or not feeling well. I’m so blessed to have her Alzheimer’s go so slowly and start so late in life. She is not in memory care yet. We hope we can keep her out of there as long as possible. I hope you get a new friend to do activities with.

I was just thinking about you the other day and hoping you were doing well... You were a fantastic caregiver and a wonderful husband and now it's time for you. ❤

I lost my husband to Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer's last Sept. 29th. He was 75 years old. I still have a hard time dealing with the loss of my best friend. We were married almost 54 years. Like you, I saw signs of his mental decline 10 years before he was diagnosed. I am getting ready to sell our home and move to a condo which I have been remodeling the last 3 months. I also have put my health on the front burner and working on losing weight. Our loved ones are in a better place and they would want us to move on with this adventure called life.

I was just thinking of you for some reason just yesterday. I hope you can get back to traveling, camping and fishing. Grief groups are good if you find a group you are comfortable with everyone. Grief doesn’t have a time frame or stamp that says this is when it should end. You grieve as long as it takes for you.

So nice to see you again on RU-vid. It's so nice of you to continue honoring Teresa. She was very blessed to have such a loving and caring husband as you. I lost my 1st cousin who I grew up with to Early Onset Dementia and ultimately she passed of COVID in 2020. My mother had Dementia due to having Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. It was the last symptom depicted by this condition and she lived for 6 years with Dementia. Thankfully, she never forgot "her kids". She She too got COVID in the nursing home (the same day my cousin passed away of it) and I ultimately lost her to long-term COVID in Jan. 2022. My next door neighbor has Dementia as well. He has the wandering type where he can walk but doesn't know where he is. A truly lost soul. We've had to walk him home a few times as he came to our home. His wife is a nurse who takes care of him. It is so sad. I am glad you are getting back to living life and revisiting your hobbies. I have a Memorial Cabinet in my home that honors all my friends and family who have passed. It has helped me slowly heal. I am sure Teresa is glowing from above and happy that you are getting back into life. You are a good man. God Bless you. Cindy 🙏

Trey, it was so good to see your video update and that you are doing well. I was so happy to hear you mention Jason and Leslie’s site. I have followed them for a couple of years and to see his decline is so heartbreaking and at such an early age as was Teresa. I’m going to try and find the other couple’s site that you referred to! Such a horrible disease, I’ve been in nursing just shy of 25 years (now retired) but I’ve done private duty in homes for families that have a member with it! It is so very sad to watch the families/caregivers go through the changes in their loved one! Stay safe and enjoy your adventures to the final states!!!

It’s great to see you back on the channel. I can only imagine how your coping with the loss of Theresa. I assume it’s all still raw, but you seem to be moving forward so that positive, Your channel is special to me as my wife was diagnosed around the same time as Teresa, and our journey seems to similar. Like you we traveled in our caravan, but that stopped about 4 years ago. It became too difficult for Coral. The bride has declined significantly in the last few months, but like you I’m trying to make each day count. Thanks for your videos, I truly appreciate them. Shayne

Trey, it is so good to see you back checking in with all of us. It is so good to know how active you are staying. To me, you are an excellent example of how to keep living through tough times. I appreciate that so much! At this time, my life is as busy as ever caring for my mother. Yet we still get her out as much as she is able to go. We have so much fun together, and the laughter is sweet music to my ears. Mom turned 90 recently. Isn't that amazing?! Trey, you have touched so many by sharing you and Theresa's story. Thumbs 👍🏻 up for you! You look good, I am happy you are moving on with your life; travalling, decorating the house, going outdoors 😊 You are a strong man, a big cuddle for you and the cats 🐈. I just turned 55 on September the fourth this week. I also live alone after my divorce at 2018. But I also have a sweet old Pussycat 🐈‍⬛ a little female and before her I had a huge male cat 🐈 orange and white. I always loved cats, grew up in a house with many cats but my ex man never let me have one. And the cats are so sweet, cuddle buddies and they feel and see how you are doing. 😊❤ I live in the Netherlands. My father sadly passed away after he got Alzheimer’s too, in September 2011, he was 72 years old and he got sick in 2007. 😢I still miss him. He loved nature and cats too. 💐

I took care of my husband with Parkinson’s/dementia for many years and he passed 1-1-24. I also was worried how life would be after. I am happy to say I have also been getting back to old hobbies and enjoying my family more. A lot of life is put on hold when you caregiver. I miss my Terry very very much . I , like you , am living. I also watch Jason and Leslie. It’s a hard job to say the least. Happy to see you are enjoying life! ❤❤

So glad to read your update. I too was a caregiver for my Mom but can only imagine how much more difficult it was to care for your spouse. God bless you and keep you as you continue to find your new way through life without Theresa. I continue to associate with a brain health research group as it's important to continue to find a cure, see if there is family history, etc.

When your travels take you to Upper Michigan, you must try a pastie (pronounced: past-ee) which is an upper peninsula long-standing staple food. It is a buttery thin flour crust baked with potato, beef, and carrots inside and shaped like a half dome and served hot. The Houghton-Hancock area has a few shops serving them daily.

Hi Trey, So happy to see you again!! So glad your keeping busy. Its the best thing to do. Its such a hard disease to live with. A lot of people forget about the caregivers!! Once our loved ones pass, their pain, suffering and journey are over, but us caregivers are still suffering and left with so much. I really hope you still make videos, even if its about traveling and your adventures, so nice to see what your doing.

I'm glad you were able to see so many states together! Good to see you back and it seems like you're dealing well in spite of missing Theresa. I'm sure that she would be happy to see you continuing on in the quest to visit all of the states. Having seen my sister become a widow in her late 40's, it was also wonderful to see her learning to find her new path, in spite of the grief.
