Veteran teacher here. Take some advice....Leave and find your dreams. You must go early and don't look back. If you wait too long, you end up not leaving and overly stressed. It's kinda late for me, but I truly enjoyed hearing your story of people who made it out!

You nailed it! All of it! I’m currently studying to make a transition into tech. The workload and the mental and physical exhaustion is really affecting my health. I hate having to feel guilty every time I take time off from work to do school functions with my two little ones. The lack of flexibility is also pushing me away from teaching! Oh, and not to mention, I hate having to lose a whole work day just for a 30 min doctor appointments. The list can go on! But thanks, this video is encouraging!

I’m so happy to have stumbled on your channel. It is my fifth year of teaching. Feel completely burnt out in this year has been the hardest so far… Talk about no admin support in these outrageous behavior issues in my classroom that have not been handled properly. Each and every day I feel like I’m not good enough and every time I try and catch my breath, there’s always somebody right there to remind me of everything I haven’t done. I feel in a sense that I am brainwashed to go above and beyond. As you know, we take our work home with us. My life revolves around being a teacher. All my money time and mental capacity is going towards ways I can support the students and make my teaching better for them. I am going on 31 years old with five years under my belt… But I am not happy. I am scared to change careers because teaching it’s all I know and I don’t feel like I can make a living with anything else 😔
@MorganChin
@MorganChin Год назад
Awww I’m so so sorry to hear this. 😥😥 That truly sucks. Teachers deserve so much better and I get it… but I can’t begin to imagine teaching in a pandemic or even post pandemic. I really want to encourage you to choose yourself, your health, your family, and your mental health. In whatever way that looks like for you and your family…. Whether it’s starting by not giving 110% every day, deciding to not take anymore work home, starting to look for a new job after work, etc. Changing careers is terrifying but it is worth it if you find something that fulfills you! You have many options as a teacher because there are so many transferable skills. If you decide to stay, I am cheering you on and encouraging you to set boundaries. You are good enough and setting boundaries is the best thing you can do. The students will be just fine! If you decide to leave, also cheering you on! It is not easy but it is worth it.

Same here, this is my 4th year and I'm 31. I'm completely drained. As the other teachers I also put my all into this, and you can get some reward in different ways. But, this excess of work and some student behavioral issues are so overwhelming. This is taking my mental sanity away. I know a few friends who decided to transition to another field because of the same reasons. They don't regret at all.

Spec ed is high burnout and once youre involved in it i found it impossible to be hired in a regular high school becuz they pigeonhole me as spec needs though i am a qualified English teacher… my school is toxic and teaching is no longer a respectable career and kids allowed to dish out abuse then i get reported on by fellow staff for disciplining them and sick of keeping a journal,, the school wont expel thugs so nobody learn and this is in special ed where none of these behaviors would be tolerated in regular schools, but they happen there too.. 9 years til retirement but i can easily have a heart attack and dont want my remaining years of work being stressed out to a possible early grave😩😩😩

To be honest I wouldn’t limit yourself. You can go into any other field that you want to, and I’m not just saying that! Teachers work everywhere. You might have to get extra certifications or degrees but there are so many options for you. If you want to use the skills you have I would say look into Learning and development at any company that does trainings with their employees. Banking and Tech companies will pay the most.

The degree program opened a ton of doors for me to get 3 internships. One of the internships led to a full time job! Although a masters degree is not required!! For my resume I focused on how I used technology in the classroom, how I taught what I did with technology to other teachers. I also showed how I managed my classroom and students. I don’t blame you for doing what’s best for you. I am a health educator (non classroom) from a health promotion/public health background. I have 2 decades of experience in various roles and it’s laughable what seasoned public health professionals get paid compared to even entry level tech workers. It’s a shame. I see some of these snot nosed 21 y/o coming out of school with some tech degree (or not) or someone who crammed their way through a 16 week certificate program being offered high level, high paying jobs. The rest of us who eat, sleep, and breath current health affairs and research (your subject matter experts) get ignored. I’m happy for you.

It’s really sad that people are not paid fairly according to the work they do. It shouldn’t have to be one or another for fair pay. You shouldn’t have to leave careers you like for better pay either.

Not sure about the teacher bonds. Have worked with a group of teachers who actually called themselves “the mean girls” . Ive been gossiped about at the happy hours and just watching teachers dress to compete with each other was silly.

@@MorganChin I can top that. I know a group of mean girl teachers that would wear matching shirts that would say “The Real Teachers” and under that it said “You can’t sit with us”. The would all wear these shirts on the days of faculty meetings.

Great video! Can you give me a ballpark amount of what your entry level salary is? Please! #Educator

It depends on where you live and where you work! It can be anywhere in between 60,000-115,000. The higher end is going to come from big tech companies in areas with higher costs of living (California/NYC/etc)

I get so tired of the minutia. The dress-ups, parties, crafts, and petty people. I can’t do another year of this.

I’ve been looking to tailor my resume to go into edtech. Summers off are overrated. They go by like 🫰. The raises you get each year are only hundreds of dollars. It’s rare that we get outside subs (I teach secondary) so if I’m absent, the other staff have to cover during their planning periods. I would probably feel guilty leaving my students behind. It is fun watching them be kids. If tried to transition out once before, but it’s hard. I’ve been in education my entire adult life.

I can relate! I miss the kids the most even now. However, I learned that I can still be a teacher or a coach with kids through Church or sports etc. Each year gets easier and you definitely begin to get used to your new work environment. The good thing is if you don’t like it you can always go back to teaching!
