Everyone wants to know how to live in a van, but is Vanlife all it is hyped up to be? What are the downsides? How do I prepare for vanlife? What are the pitfalls of life on the road?
After nearly 8 years of full time touring, I have decided to quit living on the road and return to a more regular way of living in a house.
In this video I explain my reasons, and how these might help you if you are considering a life on the road.
Previously I have made these videos that you might also find useful:

I travelled for 4 years, totally nomadic, and loved it, really loved it. But health comes first, and I sadly had to move into bricks...but now I love living in bricks, so it is all good. Enjoy the warm winter in bricks....be well

I personally have watched you both for years, and feel quite close to you... I very much thank you for showing that blokes can live small, clean and responsibly. The love you show your dogs says a ton about your character. I too (in America) have vanned for 4 years. Met a girl, whom I adore. We went inside for winter, and will return in the spring. Mark Velo, you're spot on. If you're lucky, your van/camper will hold it's value, but in most cases it will always loose value like a car. Own a home but strive to be debt free so you can have the flexibility to job hop or live a mobile life part time.

@Andrew Ditton. Your point about what if the caravan of a full timer is stolen? Full timers should all probably get a 2nd caravan, like a vintage that you design up, like you did, and can even be rented out, or have a home that you rent out, or stay with Mom (I'd have loved that, I love my Mom), and as a brick and mortar living person, it's great to have a caravan and vehicle, in case something happens to your home while you sort that out, as a plan B. I met a nice lady who got a 22' type C Dolphin motorhome because it fit exactly in a New York parking place, which she stayed in outside our building while she was getting new flooring installed in her condo. Yes plan B's are wonderful and great protection to have for everyone -- stuff happens!

@@dorcaseatch4078 I've donated everything every time I move. Then I rebuild all the necessities. And at times I feel a bit off the normal path like travelling and seeing something unusual . I rebuild the unworthy possession. And I give away again but this time it is more justifiable. The hungry vendor is happy, I'm happy, the donee is happy. It was my excuse. I'm still lost in the world of material creation, consumption, marketing....Now I only get things that I use everyday and create as needs arrive. I feel much lighter and at peace. I have found difficult to see people building cabinets, counters.in a van... I have a cot, bins under and a folding table. I’ve always been a traveller. Never staying at one job more than 2 years. Working as a freelance artist, I worked to travel. But i always had a home base. Either a house or an apartment. A few years ago i went on the greatest journey of my life when i donated a kidney to my brother. Transplant went well, and my brother was doing great. We talked excitedly about what we were going to do with the rest of our lives. My brother went back to school, and I was going to do vanlife. But when my brother passed away suddenly from a stroke, i fell into a long depression. Slowly coming out of it now. I still desire to travel. But since my brothers passing, I have craved a more permanent home base. Like you said in your video, stability. So instead of vanlife, I am thinking about building an off grid tiny home.

Hi Andrew - I’ve spent the last year considering “what next” I’ve watched many, many RU-vid videos like yours, particularly those where individuals or couples have decided to “do it” and take to the road (or water - love narrowboat vlogs)... I have recently decided to quite the rat race and given up the 2 hour plus (each way) commute into London and have decided to take my 25% tax free lump sum from my pension, pay off my mortgage and seek alternatives... I am therefore on the cusp and so your video couldn’t have come at a better time... Your advice is 100% on the money and has helped me refine my thinking... So thank you for you openness and honesty it’s refreshing. Andrew ..your the first person we watched and followed in vanlife world ..our own journey has been altered and a delay on retirement and full time touring while work on the amazing small island of Alderney commanded our attention. There is no greater priority than your own mental health and wellbeing! We've not got to meet you yet but your honesty and integrity shine through..so as you say..small change but ultimately business as usual ..we are not going anywhere. ! Thank you ♥️

Hi Andrew, lovely to hear all your plans for the future as well as your reasons for moving on into a new phase. You are absolutely right, a lesson we often find hard to learn is that phases in our life come with a shelf life and when the shelf life is over, it is best to move on to new things. Sounds like being more settled is getting the creative juices flowing and we are going to see lots of interesting vlogs in the months to come. All the very best to you and Dougal xxx

You were the first channel I subscribed to on youtube when i was considering a caravan/motorhome. My other option was a narrowboat, which is where I am as I type. I spent time on the road as a van and truck driver and I think that informed my view that nomadic life is not a bed of roses always. I move now between my boat often on a marina sometimes on the cut and my house and feel it is a good balance. I really admire your honesty and it is great to hear your enthusiasm for caravanning has returned now that there is less need to rush.

I am so glad to see this video and your decision. Very few things in our lives are 'forever'. Our thinking, priorities, health, and relationships are constantly changing around us and maintaining mental health / strength is critical to living a full and rich life. Your loyalty to we viewers was at times super-human when you were not feeling 100%. I hope those close to you get to reconnect on a more frequent basis and hope the upcoming holiday season in a brick-mortar home brings you a different version of peace and joy.

When you were setting the model railway up in the back of the van I thought something was up. I could never full time, I enjoy getting out on the road even on mammoth road trips but the comfort of a bricks and mortar home is too appealing. You can now start to build a model railway at home? Whatever happens, best wishes to you and Smiler! (Dougal).

Hi Andrew, I totally understand where you’re coming from. It was largely due to you and Mr Trudgian that my wife and I have enjoyed our caravan so much over the last 3 years. Although we have had it sited on at a different site in a different county and not traveled with it we have still enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately our pride and joy has been written off due to flooding, and now we’re both feeling it. Many thanks for taking us along on the ride. Richard.

Wise words Andrew, Good luck for your future. You certainly didn't fail, you succeeded for so many years. You are such a good, kind gentleman. My husband & I watch all your videos & enjoy watching you & Dougal. You are so right, everything does have a shelf life. After living in our present house for 30 yrs it's time to move on. We keep running away in the caravan but feel ill returning home which I think is a sure sign time to move on. xx

Thank you so much for sharing your amazing journey with us and your legacy of outstanding videos for us all to relive memorable moments with you. You have helped so many people and similarly saved people from a lot of pitfalls too. Remember that even though you may not be doing full time living on the road anymore, among van dwellers you are still RV royalty. ;o) Looking forward to future videos. Take care and be safe.

Yes, that was a really nice cup of tea! Your life is totally different from mine, but your reflections on life in general are one hundred percent valid for me too. The part of your vlog that I recognized the most was your thougths about "shelf life": Different parts of life have different qualities, and when one part of life comes to an end it's no big disaster. It is just a possibility to try something else! We are not supposed to be doing the same thing for our full lifetime. To end something, and then do something new (or different) isn't a loss, it's a "restart" - a new possibility! I don't know if I managed to explain myself, English isn't my language of choice, but i definitly did my best :-) Big thumbs up!
