An excerpt from Neil's book 'Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization.' Should we live forever? What happens to us after we die? What is the statistical probability of being alive? Tyson exercises mathematical prowess and scientific eloquence to grapple with questions that have plagued humankind since its humble beginnings. Taking a cosmic perspective on civilization not only helps us understand where we are but shows us the path forward.

hey Niel, I just wanted to ask, why is it impossible to reach 0 kelvin? bc we would need an infinite amount of "other cold" to do so? haha well, ive thought of an even better idea, so HOW ABOUT we just build a box that can support 15psi, then use a powerful vacuum to suck all the air out, if theirs nothing in the box, then theirs nothing to really be effected by the temprature, theirs nothing to VIBRATE AT ALL so would that not mean infinite cold? (pardon my spelling)

This is always my goto tactic when dealing with unreasonable theists who simply can't accept that yes... Just like Everything Else...We Die! Another one I used is... If you did live forever... Surely you'd get bored after the first few 1000 years or so... That one always stumps them! Honestly, as Neil put it, this notion of living 'forever' isn't really about that at all. But simply about the fear of Death itself. Even though this is a Natural process which will simply 'return' us to a state of non-existence, prior to our conception.

@@blackpebble1911 Because the idea of a creator is too fantastical and has no hard evidence to back it up. And the existence of a creator would just open more questions. Where did they come from? One day I complained to my grandmother (born in the 1880s) how scared I am of ghosts. She looked at me strangely and then said: " do you know how many people have ever lived? If all of them had become ghosts, you would be walking into a ghost every minute of the day." I have never been afraid of ghosts since.😅😅

Spend time reading the gospels and you'll find real life and eternal life. The same power that rose Jesus from the grave will raise us up as Jesus promised. Neils view is depressing and if it's true it would mean that life means nothing. But we were created by God for a purpose. There is plenty of evidence for Jesus and that He is the truth. Neil knows the stars and our galaxy but not life Faith hope and love will remain and God and us live/love eternally by His power. Space time and matter will come to an end. I do not fear death because I died for 22 minutes 40 years ago. I had just gone through a very dangerous back surgery. They had just turned me over. I saw the heart monitor flatline. Then I felt myself rise from body. I stood there watching my doctors and then I was gone. I did not see anything- but I felt harmony for the first time in my life. I was told it wasn’t my time yet. I could stay if I wanted too. If I wanted to return I needed to think of someone I loved- I thought of my children- then I opened my eyes and the heart monitor began to register. My doctors were crying and speaking Hebrew. They told me I had been dead for 22 minutes. Since my horrible soon to be ex- husband had a DNR my doctors had just prayed over me. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Never take a moment for granted and never underestimate the power of life. Do not fear death. Love life and explore everything you can to become the best you can be. I am 70 now. Life is precious and is meant to be loved and explored. We are so much more than we can imagine.

Have our EYES also deceived us? Neal, a prominent scientists makes proclamations on ufos, without investigations, seems a bit odd coming from a guy who needs evidence. Well, what about MULTIPLE SENSOR READINGS< independent radar AND multiple witnesses, all at the same time, bro! Last government report in front of congress, says the military sightings over the atlantic and pacific were on MULTIPLE sensor readings, AND multiple witnesses, at the same time. How the heck can you dismiss that as a sensor malfunction, simply making a proclamation with out investigating? Looks like its YOU WHO FEARS the unknown! Make a video about who these ufo's are and what purpose do they present for humans? It's apparent now that 10 to the 30 power , or whatever that number is, is also the chances of life turning into intelligent life, that ends up traveling thru space/time. Perhaps that is where our lives are going, to strive to be better and better and improve everything we use, until we can travel and search for other intelligent beings. Your video is nice ,but it skips the ultimate destiny for us.

Of course, I have my own problems as well like everybody else but I try to never give more importance to them then to the idea that the life I lead is precious, uneventful as it might be. I get to work, I get to draw, I get to listen to music, I get to travel, I get to read, I get to play games, I get to collect action figures, I get to eat great food, I get to know love, I get to know great people…. and that makes me feel like a very lucky man, not just compared to others that might have it worse, but just on a grander scale too, as in: I get to be here. I wish more people felt happy and lucky about everything they get, instead of wasting their lives on being angry over what they don’t have.

I think we need to have more open, transparent, honest conversations about death. Not just as adults but with our children in a way we're it's isn't this frightening thing but as a motivation to live free and less hesitant as none of us truly know what is to happen once this body fulfills its earthly duties. Once we become more comfortable with the inevitable you'll make more decisions with that awareness in mind and the objective you have for your life while here (idk if they'll be right or wrong).

You have even existed before THIS life. we are living energy. who's to say we HAVE to remember living before this life. For all we know...we have I've before. and will always live. Your 2nd biggest.mistake was choosing to be pentecostal. 1st biggest was choosing to be atheist. simply because you can't grasp such a powerful concept as living on and on and on. Energy never ceases. it goes on forever. Your body is your current vessel.

@@chadkinman327 what's sad is that you replied 3 times. You seem to have everything figured out, so go on and live your life and leave us "closed minded" athiests alone in peace.

@@chadkinman327 - You need to learn the difference between beliefs and facts. A little humility would also serve you well.

I would like to live forever, not because I fear death, because I love life. I enjoy doing, learning, seeing, feeling, and loving. The thought of dying doesn't bother me and I'm aware that, once I'm gone, I won't miss the things I enjoy.

This commentary Tyson was honestly how I imagined I would teach my boy. It's a very beautiful monologue. I hope among all the possibilities that more than one of me, actually hear it the way I did. May knowledge ever grace your days.

Encourage him to read and explore different views while developing critical thinking and he will find his NDT. I did when I read George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 aged 12. It led to a lifelong interest in history and politics.

I had a spiritual awakening and just wanted to be a better person because of it. Because we are all connected somehow brothers and sister and mothers and daughters, fathers and sons and it's so beautiful if we let it be

Wow. I must say that my heart actually swelled with emotion hearing these words and seeing this video. Neil deGrasse Tyson so reminds me here of Carl Sagan's speech in Pale Blue Dot - in both the contents and character of his message. I can only hope that humanity will heed such wise words, both in this age and the many thousands/millions of years of our continued existence.
