The same thing is happening in the U.S. in the bakken shale oil fields in North Dakota. The shoreline around Lake Sacagawea looks like a vision of hell with large numbers of gas flares burning 24/7. Gas flares are just natural gas that's extracted in amounts too small to be economically viable to collect and sell, right? Do gas stoves and furnaces produce hazardous levels of benzene? If not, is it something about open air burning that causes it, implying there's safer ways of flaring? Or is there some level of purification in the commercial product? Given the smoke plumes I guess inefficient combustion has something to do with it.
