Anyone in the know has a huge amount of respect for Seabees. They are the very first guys out to the battlefield essentially, and have to build a base or FOB or forward position, from scratch, in addition to fighting off any enemies in the area. Which when you're some of the first people to the place where the bad guys are, there's going to be a lot of bad guys. In Iraq and Afghanistan, these guys were getting into firefights with the enemy all the time. And back in WW2, Korea and Vietnam they were in real deep. Things get real hairy for them sometimes, and instead of calling in the infantry and hiding, they fight the enemy head on. They might be the most unique job in the US military, because it's like a construction crew that also are also active combatants and fight the enemy at the same time. They are some hard, badass mofos.

My father told me that after the island was softened up by naval bombardment as soon as the Marines had established a beach head, landing craft with heavy equipment (I think mainly dozers) would be landed with Seabees driving that equipment towards the already established airfield or to the location where the battle commanders wanted the new air strip so they would do what we know of today as "up-armor" their dozers. They just welded steel plate everywhere they could to get shielding from snipers. There was great urgency to get an airfield of some sort established because once that was done they could start landing more troops and supplies as rapidly as possible. They were plowing down trees or repairing bomb craters while the battle was still going on. The brass wanted that airfield to happen asap. That's my best recollection of what he told me many years ago. He didn't talk about the war much but he did seem to want me to know something about what he had experienced. He never talked about anyone he knew dying but of course he must have experienced that many times. He told me that he went along with some guys one night who were taking boats out at night to find swimming Japanese soldiers and shoot them in the water. It's nearly impossible to survive on a tropical island and within a few days after the island was taken the surviving Japanese soldiers were starving and were desperate to get off of that island and onto the one nearby in hopes that things would be better there. They probably knew that the Americans were hop scotching across the pacific and were skipping most of the islands, taking only the ones with the best terrain for an airfield. The establishment of a chain of airfields was a cornerstone of the drive across the Pacific. So, he went in the boat with the other guys and he told me long ago that he was sorry he'd gone along and never went again. War is hell.

I wish I would have joined the Navy to be a Seabee (did 20 in the Army) but let's not inflate it any here. They are not assaulting an objective and holding that ground to build infrastructure. That's not their job, any combat unit can establish a COP/COB/FOB and most often do. What the Seabees do is come in after and establish much more sophisticated infrastructure. Yes, they can be attacked and have been many times but so does other combat support units. The building the Seabees built for my communications equipment saved my life because it was built like a brick shit house and took 2 mostly direct hits from a mortar attack. They can also be attached to a combat unit (probably Brigade or higher) to help establish the site but they have an entire combat unit in and around them. I have the utmost respect for Seabees and Navy EOD, they have saved lives across all branches and made situations somewhat more bearable. There is a giant difference between living in a crew tent in 130 degrees and a quick building the Seabees built for you for the hell of it when they didn't need to. No one ordered them to do that for me and my team. They literally came up to our comms site and asked if we wanted a wooden building made to sleep in. They made it in under a day and it slept all 6 of us. Had a functionally weighted door and air vents with a pitched roof that could support 3 layers of sandbags.

So if your not hesitant to get dirty, working with your hands, respect and command CSW and personal weapons and own whatever you are apart of I can't imagine you won't fly in one of the 8 ratings. This brings back lots of memories of my time as an EO in the Seabees 1983-1989 This exercise reminds me of Operation Green Stinger which was a two week field training event for our Air Detachment which back then was a 90 person team, we flew fly into Eglin AFB, then convoyed into a rural part of the base and set up a base to operate from until the rest of the battalion arrived, the Air Force were the aggressors, and We were graded on our responses to the various threats and senecios they placed before us, our construction project was to repair a dirt runway the Air Force used for training and to dig a well for the site, and clear back the woods and brush from the runway. While we were blessed not to have any rain, we were struggled with the heat, humidity, and waves of mosquitoes that plagued us. While our gear and equipment were a lot different back then, M16-a1, rifles, 782 Web Gear, old duce and half’s trucks, and the cold war was still going strong as we trained to fight Russia and it’s Warsaw Pact Allies, it still goes to show that everything changes, but in a way it’s still the same, We build, We fight,

Most underrated jobs in the military could be the construction teams, involved in creating those strategic points on the battlefield that supplements defensive positions, in turn winning the skirmish if everything falls into place accordingly. another thing I'd like to add is why did the military start to use overweight, underweight and disabled people? my guess is over the last century all of the strong abled soldiers are now KIA.. I was never in a battalion. I worked for the telephone company before I joined the Navy in 1971. I soent the four years in public works departments. I worked in the telephone exchange, the water treatment plant, sewage treatment plant. I was a clerk for a while doing all the paperwork, manpower scheduling with the civilian workforce, job inspections, et. It was a very good experience. After I got out I went bac to Ma Bell. After AT&T was broken up I was laid off in 1985 I started a business in communications equipment which lasted 32 years until I retired. I was offered a 105 week course in telecommunications with the Army Signal Corps and a $30K reenlistment bonus. The wife said no. If I hadn't had the job to go bac to I would probably have stayed. There was a recession going on with high inflation in 1975. I had a 14% mortgage. The Signal Corps school would have been a huge plus in my resume. I talked to a couple guys who had had it and they were assigned to the State Department Pentagon and embassies. I did stay with a reserve battalion after I got out but after I was laid off there wasn't time for it with self employment. Working in that public works department was very helpful because it prepared me for self employment with inventory management, manpower distribution and other management skills. I also bought and sold houses.

genuinely curious, why of all things would the seabees be in the navy rather than the army?

If i were to guess (which I am, mind you) it would be because of the island based Pacific theater in WWII

I was with NMCB 3 near the end of Vietnam. When I tested for my career choice at the recruiters, I chose CE. The word Seabee was never mentioned until boot camp when the instructor asked Seabees to stand. Out of 90 guys 3 stood up. The guy behind me told me to stand. The instructor asked if I had a “C” in front of my rank. Yes, I said. Well, you’re a @$(; Seabee! I asked the guy behind me what a Seabee was and all he said was, “ they are badder than the marines!” I freaked out and thought, oh no! I didn’t want to be a marine! However, this was the best mistake I’ve ever made 45 years later. Go Seabees!

Tell your recruiter or the meps career counselor that you will wait for the job to open and you won't accept anything else if it's what you want. They threatened me telling my their captain would call me to tell me to stop wasting their time. Well, here I am as a seabee. It'a part of the game. Good luck.

Message to all active duty and reservists, you can claim job related purchases as a tax deduction. List may include the following job related gear such as boots, socks, uniforms, yes haircuts are a tax deduction so long as you have receipts, weapons such as knives, accessories to your M4A1, running shoes, cell phone contract up to 80% (legal reason, your boss texts you even a single time you have now used your personal owned electronic device for business use) the other 20% is personal regardless if you don’t have personal time for it. Continuing on, driving someone to and from a military location with your POV when not being paid by the military. Need more examples!? Too easy, read your state laws in regards to tax deduction or ask a tax preparer for a list. Good luck out there shipmates!
