Loved the early 80’s! Pair of 10 holes were £19.99, and not cheap Chinese crap ones, either. My Outlander crombie was 30 quid, and I wore it till after it fell apart! We had the best of times!
its not a fucking style, its a way of life. im a 14 year old skin, and if youre planning on just wearing the clothes then you can fuck off and you aint welcome.
@@3sjstill438 You know what you're right. I kind of grew tired of the "style" anyway. And let me tell you something If you represent the 1980s skinhead wanna bes who believe in their own shite about how your race is superior to others and support Hitler well not my friend your not a nazi. You have shite for brains if you think for one minute you're superior in every way. I bet you the women you sleep with in bed is a family member. But if you are in the old sense of being a skin head then I take every thing I said back. But theres no reason to be hostile to those who dont understand to really he a skinhead mate.
What a sound bloke. Seems really intelligent, and perfectly sums up the Skins, far more than some wanky BBC4 doc with academic tossers on it could ever do. Would definitely hear more from him for sure
Born in 71, first record i got was one step beyond. Got 2 tone all that singles, 54 46 and the rest .,love Skin and my scooter 125 vespa, always ..Pete
Working class is anyone who works for a living for someone else, whether the someone else is a private company that makes a profit off you, or the state. It's not about factories, it's about tending to be badly paid unless you have a strong union, and not being either a boss or a manager, or self-employed. And Uber and the like isn't being self-employed, it's having an employer whose hiding from the legal responsibilities by pretending everyone is a private contractor. The working class is bigger than ever, it's just the media have hidden workers behind other labels, mostly negative like chav.
1979 I was 7 and my babysitter was my 18 year old skinhead cousin and his mob of mates , what memories being sneaked into nightclubs , hanging around town whilst they got pissed on special brew or McEwan's , fights , vandalism , fights , party`s , more fights . All before the age of ten , they taught me fucking nothing but great memories .
The punk and the skinhead culture passed me by. I was too young to understand what the movement was all about and probably wouldn't have fitted into either movement. Though I admit I used to see punks on the bus and their hairstyles always fascinated me especially the mohicans hairstyles I always wondered how they managed to keep their hair in the mohicans style, and their clothing always interested me. When I was a kid skinheads were the trouble makers and they were into head banging kind of music we used to call them head bangers because whenever we saw them they were always jumping up and down doing a head banging movement and they were always in trouble with the police. Punks were just as bad but not as bad as the skinheads as I remember.
My babysitter got me into the Ramones at the same exact time, as we are exactly the same age! Being from the States there were differences, obviously, but the spirit was basically the same.
a was a skinhead 1969 71 a was 16 and a was working class hero, and riding a bsa, bobber av been behind bars ever since still building them, and chops, suprising how many skins road motorcycles in the very early 70s
Excellent stuff.. I’m an ageing 80’s skin head and sadly I was able to afford to dress as a skinhead back then on my unemployment benefits but now at 55 and a good full time job I’ve to look for sales and I’m fucked if I’ll pay over 200 quid for Docs made in China!.
Where I lived there was a lot of Skinheads but not many blacks and as both groups usually lived in the poor housing the few blacks often joined the skinhead gangs so there wasn't any tension with them. Asians were a different story though, they took a lot of stick.
Unfortunately I don't know if we can once your seen in red docs and braces people will automatically label you a racist the Nazis really did ruin skinheads
I loved the look of skinhead culture after initially discovering punk in the late 80s but was put off bye the racist element that it developed especially in Australia which was a white majority country. I still cut my hair short and listen to SKA and reggae but could not consider myself a true skinhead. I read a lovely article in Beat magazine (Melbourne music fanzine) in the 90s that painted a harmonious picture of a young white Skin and a Black skinhead meeting up under the clocks at Flinders street. If only it were that simple. No Racism, no bigottry, no hatred. Just work the week and have fun on the weekend. Working class style.
Very astute observations , the Punk rock explosion certainly shook things up in 76/77 and i fell for the fashion and attitude like many at that time. The skinheads were about as a subculture as were the bikers/rockers , and teddy boys , (the mods didn't really appear in force until 1979/80) , but the punks considered themselves the "newest"/"freshest" culture compared to the others. The gentlemans comments about economic depression are correct , very little money or prospects , and a feeling of "no future" created a frustration and anger which came out in the music like punk and Oi! , the bands sang about us and our problems so garnered massive followings. I don't think youth subculture is anywhere near the same today, there is a large wealth divide now , the "underclass" have been undermined by drugs and corporate controlled music and fashion industries as with the football scene , we live in a different era today. Its called progress I fink!
So true.... but late 70’s many Punks weren’t Working class bit from college. Most working class guys in London were actually Soul Boys who would have been Mods. Most Punks at School we’re odd ones out. Also by the late 70’s most Skinheads in the South were on Estates outside London where the new estates were built when the council blocks in London were knocked down.
In the States, it was punks, real skins, Mods and early rap kids vs boneheaded Nazi Skins in the 1980’s (we destroyed the Nazis) Very good video. Spot on accurate. In The U.K. Or U.S. all youth culture seems dead. (Or I’m just old) 😆 I came over to London in ‘12 to finally see my favorite football club who I first heard of in 1986 mostly through the Cockney Rejects, (I’m sure it’s been figured out by now) however, the only “youth culture” I saw was techno kids who dressed punk! It’s all good, time moves on, (and my club beat a certain West End club for the first time since promotion!)
@@dennisalveranga877 I knew plenty of “working class” punk rockers, however, it was very different in the States. Your “middle class” meant rich kids, our “middle class” was exactly that. It wasn’t the ghetto, but we lived right between one, and a matter of 2 miles separated the hood from the rich kids on the hill. I was never poor, but sure as hell wasn’t a rich kid, I loved the raw power, honesty, and DIY ethos of Old Punk, and 1980’s American Hardcore punk, cos I just didn’t fit or afford the Izod, country club, top 40 mob, and where I loved a lot of metal, that too became very convoluted by the late 1980’s
better than a lot of interviews, but why would someone who was a skinhead for 2 years tops be put up as a spokesman for people like me that stayed true for decades
There are three types of skinheads. The Two Tone Skinheads that listen to music from Madness, Bad Manners, The Specials, The Oi Skinheads that listen to Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects etc. The far right Boneheads associated with The National Front and The British Movement.
Only 1 "type" of skinhead - Ska/Rock steady/Blue beat/Skinhead Reggae/2 Tone ??? The rest latched onto the clothing and made it intimidating and aggressive which attracted the bellends/arseholes !
@@stingray4real yes, but still the origins/basis of skinheads - whatever shot off from that was not skinhead, it just latched on to a "hard" nickname given by the press, they weren't interested in the black/music history of it. As you can see by the 2nd example you gave - Oi music etc (no link at all to my ears) ha ha !... cheers for the reply. be safe ;)
Casuals wtf when you a skin your always a skin for life ,this mans never been a skin ,talking alot of bollox Oi Oi spirit of 69 Keep the faith never lose who you are, No retreat no surrender, the mans a top
I was an original Skinhead in 1969/70/71 and it wasn't about right wing then ....It was only in the 1980s when the national front starting infiltrating the football terraces and outside grounds that it became more prevalent.. But we were into our music and football of course and if we got into a fight then so be it I became a boot boy and suedehead after the skins sort of died out during the early 1970/71 years
Ever heard of Skinhead revival? Which part of skinhead is not skinhead? And why are we SHARP skins still fighting against racism till now while some media idiots thought ALL skinheads are racist? We are here to send a message that we arent racist. So as the early trojan skins in the 60s
Jon Rend, That's like saying ''true mormons'' were the ones from the 1950's, not the ones from the 1970's and 80's. Or like saying that 1930's doctors were the real ones and not the current ones. Of course the times change and so do some things. But the genuine and core values of skinhead way of life: , Short hair, boots and braces, skanking, beer, no politics bullocks, brotherhood, loyalty, ska and reggae, a fight every once in a while, are universal and timeless. By the way, I'm from Colombia. You can say colombian skinheads aren't ''true skins'' so you can sound like your nazi bonehead mates!
Rodolfo talkining about the UK mate and the skinheads back in the days and the trends. Actually late 70s, skins a lot of them adopted the Punk scene more and the music trend that bought with it.
I started out punk but grew into a Skin but don't remember any Skins ever giving credence to ska/reggae and they certainly didn't dance like the multiracial /multicultural ponces of today!
And proper skinheads have always been into more than just oi and for that matter proper skinheads have always been anti racist and anti fascist even if patriotic.
National Front were never proper skins 😭😂 neither was Skrewdriver in fact the best hit Ian had was that tree 🌳🚗 rest in piss. Nazi pigs appropriated the skinhead subculture it never belonged to those inbred idiots
Proper skins anti racist 🤘🏻🤜🏻🤛🏿 Hating people for being a different skin color literally contradicts the origins of the skinhead subculture which was literally influenced by Caribbean immigrants and music like reggae and ska
@@hippyskin6490 ''Spirit of '69 The phrase Spirit of '69 is used by traditional skinheads to commemorate what they identify as the skinhead subculture's heyday in 1969. The phrase was popularized by a group of Scottish skinheads called the Glasgow Spy Kids, a play on the glaswegian pronunciation of spike heads.'' - Trojan Skinhead Wikipedia
Seems everyone as a different take on skinhead..different areas differ...but in general skins r not racist if u r u was never a skin u was a bonehead total different ...
Nazis were always posers they just appropriated both the style and music. They've never been proper skins ever. They literally just dress up but dont even understand the actual history behind the subculture
Blablabla. Be induvidual. You are all like "wow im an individual, i am a rebell" and having a dresscode, bald head, doc martens etc. Trendy boys..fuck you.
- - real skinheads could give a shit about it, some were and some weren’t then, just different people with a liking for the same sub culture. Same as bikers or greasers in the 50’s
A True Skinhead loves his country, religion and culture! The wandering Jew cannot identify with any of these but regards himself as special! Just view the Babylonian Talmud and the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion if you want to talk about racial supremacism!
I'm really I'm sorry... But that's not all truth... It looks like the Comercial sharp shit.... The 80's were the oi! Skinheads time.... The real skins. Not the working class mods or whatever..... Real Skinheads ✋No Surrender.
Wow ! What a group of ''brave'' and ''fierceless'' chaps ! Pushing a girl around and calling her names ! Damn, these guys are mean ! I want to be just like you ! 🤣🤣🤣 Besides being ''brave'', some bloody snowflakes who feel alluded everytime someone mentions the word ''bonehead''. 🤦♂️ Monika Madrid, congratulations, skingirl ! You have the courage to stand up for your beliefs !
Tiomoncho Argentina eres un simple poser. Los Skinheads tradicionales, los Troyanos, eran apolíticos. Esos son los verdaderos. Ustedes son payasos con tirantas y botas. ''Neither red nor racist''.
You obviously have no idea what it was like growing up in late 70's Britain under Thatcher's cosh ,living in some inner city shithole with no jobs out there .Being a SKIN gave us an identity, the music was good, the cloths were cool and those boot's ox-blood doc-martens14 hole, need upwards.
