This body of water wasn't here 120 years ago. Where did the migrating birds stop before? Prior to the breach of the Colorado that flooded the Salton basin in 1905, it's estimated that the Salton was dry since the 1700s. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the lake was filled three or four times over the last 1,300 years, cyclically formed and dried due to natural flooding from the Colorado River. Nature will adjust and the birds will locate another stop-over. What won't fix itself is the massive amount of pollution from California farmers and the chemicals they've dosed their fields with.
