Life beyond the Blakes hitch climbing system.
This video is about some of the things you can do with just a few pieces of added equipment.
The blakes hitch system is the cheapest of all systems and requires the least amount of equipment. If you only have a rope and a carabiner, you can climb on a blakes hitch but there is so much more you can do with just a few more pieces of inexpensive gear.

I tried the 6 to 1 with the hitch climber pulley last week. I was so surprised how how easy it was to ascend. TY 🇨🇦🇺🇸

This is really well done. Personally though, I like the simplicity of a split tail, Blake's hitch, and footlocking. Still works for me and I'm 57.

Dude! YOU are the best teacher of this stuff that I’ve seen yet and I’ve seen just about all videos on climbing systems. You are the best teacher OR you are just the best at making yt videos that teach climbing systems… probably the latter. .

Very awesome, i don't care what any one says... As a traditional ropes purist, I guess you could call it, I find this helpfull in how I configure my very simple rope and biner based set ups... I recently got into redirects, using biners, or pulleys for SRT, this is giveing me some good info for the few things I know... Thank you!!!

Richard Mumford - You talk about saving money, but adding a few extra items, what about just using a second Blakes Hitch? It doesn't cost a thing to tie a second knot. Gear can be damaged, lost or stolen, skills are forever.

One of the cool things about being a climber is devising ways to get around in a tree. Heck I just use a split tail and footlock but that doesn't mean squirreling around with tricky stuff isn't fun.
@godislove8740
@godislove8740 5 лет назад
I think you could perhaps show the danger of using a split tail with a large knot (riding on the hitch) and a work around using a strop to get the biner and knot higher. I don't use sewn eyes often preferring knots, everytime I sew on a button they pop off lol....sewn splices I trust though. Also one of the main advantages of a Blake's is they rarely get too stuck to move and are adjustable shorter when topping out and longer for ascents. Not so a prussik or variation of

Richard thanks great video... As a beginner I like the simplicity of the blake hitch system for descents as well.. Do you find that these other Changes allow that flexibility?? I will have to get out in my back yard and practice with them (low & slow to start of course!!) Thanks again..!

If I need help pulling something I have the ground guys pull or hook it up its cool all that hardware just a waste of money I have carabeaners and a rope I'm gone up the tree tie in quickly and go to work very simple and your hand isn't getting caught between any ropes as this guy has said a few times if your trimming you add a micro it's as simple and safe as can be a closed system

With the additional micropulleys at about 3:00 minutes in the video, it is not clear to me how you will achieve a 6:1 mechanical advantage. Mechanical advantage in a pulley system is determined by the number of direction reversal legs minus 1. Here is how I see it. I assume the two legs on the left are just the rope going over a higher pivot point. There is no mechanical advantage from those two legs by themselves. Adding the leg to the right coming up out of the main hitch creates a mechanical advantage of 2:1 and adding the small prussik with the micropulley makes it 3:1. Since the small prussik is tied onto the second leg of the main rope, there is no mechanical advantage upstream of it so this does not create a compound system. I like the simplicity of the added micropulley and plan to try it myself.

It can be tricky to calculate the mechanical advantage when one or more pulleys are moving opposite the direction of the load. It's best to look at the tension in the rope instead of some rule which was developed with some assumptions which may or may not apply to the setup in front of you. In this case: climber is pulling down with tension T, so prusik pulley has T down on each side and 2T down from above, this 2T joins the T from the lower pulley to give 3T down on the right side of the climbing line. 3T over the branch and so (neglecting friction) 3T on the left side. Thus, 6T in a climbing scenario, 5T if the load and force provider are separate (hauling config).

The reason I use only a caribeaner and a Blake's is because you have zero chance of anything failing and it's fast and light and there I don't look like ace hardware climbing around removing a tree, there is no need for all that crap

Not true really,a tending pulley won't ever fail and a pulley system won't make you fall. I'm 48 and climbing better than at 32. I use what I feel I need depending on the job and height of first branch. If you can make it easier then your body will thank you in 10 years. The logs still gotta go in the truck once your down so....save any energy you can. I don't use pulley systems but beginners without A frame backs might. If they could invent a pulley system for a big saw I'd use it. Wrists are knackered, knees old, teeth gritty. Enjoy your work.

Hi Richard, at 5:33 I've seen you protect your rope by the friction on the branch... How did you set up the protection and where can I find it? Thanks for your answer!

Climbing lingo is a bit of a learning curve for a noobie...I'd like to climb a 50 ft sailboat mast using KISS.....many ways to skin a cat.
@godislove8740

I was a yacht rigger before ARB. You can just get winched up the mast if you like, or srt by tying off the rope. We used a bosun chair and a pal to bring up the slack. Grab the rigging, boat shoes on the mast pull and the chair arrives behind you hopefully. It's murder on the hips and slippery when wet. At least two turns on the winch by your pal when the let you down or you will s*it your pants. 😃 I've climbed BT global challenge yachts which the rigging is too wide to get hold off on both sides, I guess those masts are 80ft ish. 50 you will find no real problem getting hold of the stays. Don't stay up the mast in a lightning storm 😭
