I divided my home into 48 sections using a “ list app “ and over two months I slowly checked off these different areas as I decluttered and it was hands down the easiest way to tidy my home ! Different sections : bar area, guest closet, medicine cabinet, etc.

A tip I have to motivate me to clean/organize is watching cleaning/organizing videos while actually doing it. Like, if I’m not wanting to do dishes, I’ll watch Kitchen Nightmares while doing it to remind myself I don’t want a kitchen to look like any in the show, or watching Hoarders or Organizing RU-vidrs while cleaning the living room or bedroom. It’s just something that helps me get motivated to start and continue during deal cleans or if I’m being particularly lazy.

Its easy to pluck out any personal cards or letters in the pile of mail each day and everything else gets tossed in the pile that i open, read, file or dispose of at the end of the week. Before i start, i make a cold drink and find a 45 minute episode of Hoarders on RU-vid that i havent watched before, and prop my phone up on the table to watch while i sort. Using my phone instead of the TV indicates I'm engaged in a solitary activity and it doesnt inconvenience any of the usual TV watchers in this family. I spend that 45 minutes alone in my own little zone -- it has turned out to be a pleasant little break off my feet.

I’ve come to accept the fact that there are going to be toys on my floor at any given time. I have young kids, there’s no avoiding it. I can clean and they follow up right behind me wrecking it again because that’s what kids do 😂 As long as the important things are done (laundry, dishes, floors swept & stuff like that) then I feel pretty okay about everything.

Kids love routine. From the time they are very young, they can learn to put their toys away. Start by helping and modeling how to put them away, and as they get older, give them more responsibility for picking up on their own. My own children and the thirty 6-7 year old students in my classroom, year after year, did an amazing job cleaning up after themselves. And they felt a sense of pride in what they could do. It gives them ownership of their space, and teaches them a lifelong skill that they can carry into adulthood. 😊

I have 3 kids, and I combat the toys in every room by having a box in every room dedicated to toys. So as i see toys on the floor i can just toss them in a box on the way through. That way, instead of having to clean up all the toys at once after the kids go to bed, i just have to pick up the boxes and sort them into their proper places. Has helped a lot to avoid toys everywhere

@@pinkmilitia6946 I do this too and its been a game changer! My kids do well cleaning up without having to sort/separate toys. With 3 kids, 6 and under (and a 4th on the way), i pick my battles lol. I usually sort the stuff myself weekly or bi weekly, depending on how much is mixed up. I get to purge old or broken toys easily too and see whats played with more. I also keep toys with lots of pieces in bins and rotate so we dont have an entire bin of legos out with all of barbies friends and accessories lol.

You're absolutely right about labels like "clean person" and "messy person" hindering people from improving. This also works in other areas of life. Labeling yourself as "bad at x" gives you an automatic out and you therefore refuse to try to do better.
@wandmn2007
@wandmn2007 3 года назад
It is known as "growth thinking". We tend to assign what children are good at from a very young age. And the better you are at something, the more likely people are to help you with "x" thing, so you naturally practiced. I'll use myself as an example. I have always been gifted in ways we consider "conventionally" intelligent. I was reading by the time I was 3,by first grade I was going through 5 chapter books every week. But, the worst report cards I ever got were in Kindergarten, because I did (and all don't) hold my pencil correctly and my handwriting is terrible. I never would learn phonics (I was in my 20's until I knew what long and short vowels were). I mean we were graded on how well we could skip, which wasn't quite as bad as my fine motor skills, but still bad. It became apparent I was very bright in all subjects, especially reading and writing. My friend was pretty book smart too, but she was very artistic. So what happened? If someone needed help writing a paper, they came to me. If they needed to build something or make a sign, they went to her. Makes sense, but it also means we both got better at things we were already good at. This was all back in HS, but funnily enough, sheer boredom and the fact that the Dollar Tree is selling cool art supplies for only $1. My first project was painting a wooden crown pink and putting stickers on it. Definitely not going in a museum, so I started looking for new projects, and I happened to find a Cinderella carriage made from all Dollar Tree items, and I love princesses, and you couldn't just buy it. I couldn't find all the materials, so I had to be creative. Now the point isn't that I made amazing craft, it was full of Mnistakes, but the point is it was something that had been rooted in my head for years, that all the intelligence was in book sense and that I'd never be able to make something by hand. I just wasn't coordinated enough. But the truth is, we may not be great at certain things, but that doesn't mean you just don't do those things. It should be you practice until you are proficient at many things. No comparing just everyone trying to berrer oneself.

Something that helped me was “a cluttered or messy house is not a representation of your ethics” meaning “just bc your area is a disaster doesn’t mean you’re a BAD PERSON.” I’m a single mom of a 7 year old and my mom just passed away and she was a huge help in me surviving. Now I have to reinvent my whole life and my place is a hell-hole. So! Great advice as always. When my kids were little, but old enough to put things away, I used to play a "clean up" song and we would all clear up our respective clutter until the song was over. It worked pretty well. I did make the mistake of buying baskets which I would keep on the steps going to the second floor of my house. Throughout the day, I would place items in them that should have been stored on the second floor. As stuff accumulated in them, I became overwhelmed and those baskets would sit there for days until they were almost overflowing. In retrospect, I should have found them a home on the first floor or taken them upstairs as I cleaned up downstairs. But my transport container turned out to be another way of delaying the cleanup and I just made more work for myself. These days, I tolerate messiness better than I did as a young mother. I have learned to chunk things up into small goals and I try to focus on one goal each day. At the end of the day, I write down which goal(s) I met that day as an affirmation that I was successful. It's a much better way to end the day - focusing on the positive instead of what I failed to do. I doubt my home will ever be as neat and clean as I'd like it to be. But I've also learned to let go of my ideal of having a picture perfect home. In the grand scheme of things, it just isn't that important. All I want now is a place in which I am comfortable.

Aww a lot of this sounds like what I’ve been learning in the FlyLady program 🥰 i remember when I finally put it together that clean and messy aren’t opposites, it’s just that how we think of a “clean” house means it’s both clean and tidy. All I’ve ever really known how to do is deep clean - the second I feel a space is dirty, I deep clean it. I can’t tidy to save my life, but I live in a clean home. Clutter is the issue, and as clutter disappears, cleaning (without deep cleaning) becomes easier to incorporate. As you said, it didn’t become messy in a day and it won’t become clean overnight. Give yourself grace and jump in where you are!

I donated the rest. Then I bought one of those bamboo slim utensil drawer containers took up half of my drawer space. I had enough room to place my measuring cups and spoons in; thus, freeing up an entire drawer to put my spices in and get them off of my countertops. Now my countertops are clear. I used to hate to clean because I used to lack these methods but after watching you and other people cleaning on youtube I have started to love it. I even have my oen cleaning channel on YT now. So thank u so much for all the inspiration! 🙏🤩

I have adopted your rule: Do something the night before that morning you will thank you for. Best advice. Also, I do laundry according to person and not putting all laundry together, it makes putting away so much easier.

I do that too for the laundry. Soooo much easier, you don’t have to sort anything and ask yourself « which kid that t-shirt belongs to? ». I started this when the difference in size between my two boys wasn’t so obvious anymore.

When I took care of my 2 preschool granddaughters I had 2 laundry baskets for them. One for light colors and the other for dark. I also gave them net lingerie bags for their undies and sox. They're in their 20s now and still use that system.

This was huge for me when it comes to laundry people spend the vast amount of time sorting a giant pile of everyone's clothes. Now we do clothes by the person. I actually stopped sorting my laundry by lights and darks years ago as well. I am really picky about keeping my clothes nice so it was hard to pull the trigger, but I've never looked backed. No more sorting by color for me.

Thank you so much for this. Im the kinda guy that doesn't ever clean because i never have a lot off free time and my brain was just convinced that i gotta do it all at once or even do whole rooms at once. It never occurred to me not only to break it down in sections of my home, but also to break up the time. Which will also lead to better cleaning habits overall. It all clicks now. Thank you so much. Finally some advice that is realistic and doable. I've been in denial about perfectionism, however after some soul searching I find that is a large portion of why I don't tackle some jobs. In the back of my mind I think Why do it if it's isn't what I consider "perfect". So I get defeated before starting, or do a little but give up. As you said, set aside time each day, or twice a week or whatever works best, make 15 minutes, or even 3 minutes, and just do as much as you can. Writing things down always helps me, but the time management part is challenging. But, with your hlep and some grace from above, I feel that stronger and more confidence. Thanks BFC!

Just wanted to say, thank you. This makes me feel so much better. I've been actively working on improving my home organization, declutter and cleanliness and I feel overwhelmed and very behind still. Knowing it is a sliding scale, and working to improve instead of jumping from messy to perfect in one swoop has helped me put things in perspective and allowed me to re-dedicate myself. I know this is achievable. Just not today, but all the days.

Thank you so much for making this video! I love your scale from messy to clean and how you visually showed us that’s IT’S OKAY to move a little at a time and jumping doesn’t work. I needed to see that visually as that’s the way I learn best. Also, the saying, “If you don’t do it right the first time, you might as well not do it at all” is something I grew up hearing. I am certainly a perfectionist that procrastinates and I’m working on that. I just really needed to hear all that you said! One of your best Videos! You identified my issue/reason for a good size chunk of why I’m not successful in having a Tidy home. Thank you for teaching me how I can turn that around and thus find success. Failing at this contributes to my Depression & Anxiety in a big way. People think I’m extremely organized & must have a Magazine Worthy Apt! Boy are they wrong. I’ll stop chasing that perfectionism now! I can break it all down to bite sizes, I’m confident of that. You are so right in everything needing to have a place or I can’t put it away. It just all makes perfect sense in how you explained it! I was happily married for 29 yrs. with no warning I lost everything & everyone. I went from a family life in a big family home. From being healthy to fighting cancer, alone. I now live alone in a small apartment. No family No friends. I also was raised in a huge family. I’m the middle of 9! I could manage life on that grand scale. I don’t know how to best live my life in this small home alone. Today’s video was exactly what I’ve been needing to hear. Utilizing the steps you’ve shown will help me get this all figured out and I can start living my new best life in my tiny place. Thank you for all the work you put into your channel. I agree with her 3- and 15-minute approaches. I do the same kind of thing, but I call mine the "Fast 5," "Clean 15," "Dirty 30" and "Power Hour." I also make a list at the beginning of each day and assign one of these categories for each thing I need to do. Then I add up all the times and realize that I can get it all done in only, say 3 hours, which is totally achievable and keeps the day from being overwhelming. Since it's completely unrealistic to clean and organize for, say, 8 hours a day due to breaks for rest, meals, interruptions, etc., I never schedule more than 4 hours of to-do list items, and then I can usually get them all done.

The mail especially the store ads...was a huge mess in my house. Who ever grabbed the mail would bring it in and throw it on the floor. I hated it. I started grabbing the mail on my way in the house from work and would not set the mail down anywhere. I go through it immediately, bills get put where the bills go and most of the rest of the mail goes directly into the trash can. It has helped keep my living room floor paper free. 😀

This video resonates with me 100% I've been teaching myself how to be a more tidy person. I've been watching others in my life who seemed to have a better handle on it that I did. What I noticed is that the biggest thing that they were doing that I wasn't was a little bit each day. I would wait until everything was a disaster, and then HATE every moment of cleaning. Once I learned to do a little bit each day, that not only is more manageable, but I could enjoy the progress & little successes along the way. Thank you for being part of my process.

But I have a work life where she can clean and that’s ok. I’m a realtor and I’m constantly on realtor time always on call, on the double and on a mission LOL I do run hard and fall exhausted at the end of my days. I did a 15 min clean up of dishes, empty dish washer, wash dishes. I found time that while my coffee and espresso are running to clean all the smudged new stainless appliances that were overdue. Before bed I started a clothes Declutter in my my closet. 15 minutes later I had my first bag of donations ready. That’s a good day one. my kids detested cleaning. I put one ONE song (usually a jammin song) and the goal was to clean for that time. 3 people cleaning for 3 1/2 minutes accomplishes a lot. Usually they were pumped up enough I could get one more song out of them and by then the whole house was pretty clean (not deep clean). A sink full of dishes takes less than 3 minutes to wash!!!!!

All great tips! I have chronic pain and having a place for everything, decluttering, and investing in easy to use cleaning tools has made a huge impact on my quality of life. I keep all of my hair and makeup stuff in one basket that I can take out in the morning. After work, I put everything back in the basket and into the cabinet. After decluttering, I don't have as much to dust and wipe down. I use a lightweight cordless vacuum that's easy for me to push and pull around. I even buy those little bleach/chlorine tablets that you can just drop in the tank to help keep the toilet cleaner during the week - that way if I have a bad weekend and can't get out of bed, I won't have to do any heavy duty cleaning the next weekend - just a light scrub. My point in sharing all this is to say "the easier it is the more likely you will do it." Just doing things a little bit at a time will make a big difference and will keep your home from being chaotic and unwelcoming.

It isn't a question of decluttering; it is how you manage it and your life. You aren' t dealing with stuff, you are dealing with your own mindset and changing yourself. Put in the work it takes to understand and honor yourself. It is a very slow process. Give yourself kindness and forgiveness. You have to find your motivation. Remember, you' re not going for big; just small habit changers. Set up some systems that work for you-shoe boxes, hooks, reusable shopping bags etc and sort like items. The act of touching it can help establish memory of where that item is. If you want to improve on the look of the storage, do it later. Remember to respect your version of clean and organized. It also helps to know that many products for orga icing aren't helpful in general, or don't match your way of doing things. I need to see what I have, so kitchen utensils get hung on pegs, and a shoe divider bag on the back of my pantry door holds dishtowls, light bulbs, batteries and more. It is essential to have very small and specific goals. I also identify what my gain is for doing a task....and use only tips that make sense to you, and do only those methods you feel you can sustain over time. Assess your system, focusing on what payoff you're getting, such as getting out of the house quicker because you can find your keys, and the peace of mind that comes with that Reward yourself. Acknowledge these😮 areas of improvement

It's almost never an issue of lacking time, it's almost always an issue of priorities. People say "I don't have time to clean or to cook", yet people have plenty of time to play with their phone or watch TV. People have time to go out, time to meet friends etc. etc. Statistically Americans spend 5 hours a day in front of a screen for entertainment, be that social media or TV. So almost everyone has the time, it's just that we don't want to spend that time on something as mundane as cooking or cleaning. I always have the time to clean and to cook, I don't always have the time to meet friends and I have no interest in making the time to go out or watch TV (actually we don't have a TV anymore - such a waste of time). Something like YT is better because it wastes less time if you restrict yourself to a few short videos. I just have it in the daily routine: get up, while the tea water is heating make beds and vacuum the floors (yes, I do that every day). On Saturdays clean the bathrooms. Before going to bed clean the kitchen. Mopping floors is done whenever vacuuming doesn't do the job, so this may be any day. My wife does the laundry so I don't deal with that. Mowing lawn and other outdoor maintenance is Sundays as needed. This household runs on a schedule and that works well. You usually cook at specific times, why not clean and do other chores at specific times too?

How about if you have a massive orchard, garden with lots of mowing.
@uweschroeder
@uweschroeder 2 года назад
@@TJ-mw6bb If you have a massive Orchard you have workers tending it, most people in my area who have acres of fruit trees have a orchard management company dealing with it. If you have a lot of mowing you will eventually be done mowing. When you look at your day critically you will have some kind of routine - get up, coffee, breakfast, check the news, go to work etc. Now think which of the things you do are not necessary - social media? TV? You will find several things you do every day that you don't really have to do but you do them because you like doing them. That's the priorities you have over cooking yourself, probably because you don't like cooking. I know nobody who would be so pressed on time that there wouldn't be time to cook. Sure, you probably won't be cooking 5 course dinners, but there's a lot of simple easy and quick to make meals out there that literally take less time to make than to go grab takeout plus are cheaper and healthier.

Then the stuff we use is the only thing in the dish tray, is it not clean so we have to do the dishes. We don't get another spoon frome the cupboard, you have to use the one that is in the dish tray. So dishes have e become much easier and much faster to do. Now I wash the dishes many times a day but for 5 min and it is so fun to have a clean counter❤

Huge thanks for this video. First, you're not preaching to me, you're sharing short tips that will truly help if focusing on one at a time. I can take your suggestions one at a time and work on it until it becomes a habit and then add another tip to work on. This way it's not overwhelming! I cannot thank you enough! 🌿🌱🌿🌱🌿
