I managed to complete this one in under 21 minutes. It's always a joy of my day if I can beat Simon's time even with the advantage of him having to explain things. You don't really need the X-wing as the "crankshaft" works by just considering implications of 1 placement through boxes 4/6. I did another classic sudoku with the same trick, and am always alert now when I see the same pair in opposite corners. That was the only real trick of the puzzle, but still hidden with a combination of naked and hidden singles so lots of fun!

I liked the way you solved the x wing of 3's around 15:40. Though I solved it slightly different. In box 6 I found the 3 could not go in r5c9 because of the two 4 possible positions, the two 1 possible positions, and the two 6 possible positions. Basically since row 4 in box 6 had to have a 4 and row 5 had to have the 6, that meant that the 1 had to go with one and the 3 had to go with the other. Also since the 1 was closer to the end of the row, then the 3 would have to be before what ever number it was paired with. So for me I only had one spot for the 3 in column 9. But your way solved it with the x wing so was nice. :)

Very nice puzzle. Solved it in 26:15. At 24:00 an easier way to finish the puzzle is to notice that the 2 in r5c2 forces a 2 into row 8 in box 7, which gives a 3 in cell r8c9, after which the puzzle is easily solved. Recently I have been using a technique to "find a broken path" method, in which I am looking for two cells with the property that one of them must contain the same particular digit. If I find two such cells, then any cell seeing both must not have that digit. This helped me on this puzzle as well (after finding the X-wing on 3s). For this method I consider only cells that only have two candidates remaining and look for two of them in the same row or column or box that share a digit. The nonshared digit gives me a pair of possibilities meaning that at least one of the cells must be that digit. Then I look for other cells with exactly two candidates that see one of these cells and share the digit. Then I switch to that cell and the nonshared digit in that cell and continue until I find a pair with the same digits. If I can't, try another pair. In this puzzle at 17:14 one can find what Simon noticed as follows: Start with cells r5c9 and r9c9, which share a 1, so this is a 3-2 pair (meaning that either r5c9 is 3 or r9c9 is 2). If I see a 3-2 pair seeing either of these cells, I would find my goal. Seeing none, but noticing the 13 pair in r5c1, now we have a 1-2 pair for r5c1and r9c9 (meaning that either r5c1 is 1 or r9c9 is 2). At this point I am looking for a 1-2 pair that sees r5c1, which is in r1c1. This gives the 2-2 pair for r1c1 and r9c9 just like Simon found, eliminating the 2 from both r1c9 and r9c1.
@NettoTakashi
@NettoTakashi 3 года назад
25:00 I found a different path to continue from this point. Rather than spotting the 189 hidden triple, I asked the question: "where can the 2 go in box 7?" Both possibilities were in row 8. That means r8c9 cannot be a 2, so it must be a 3, which quickly feeds back through the "crankshaft" to give much of the same information the 7 gave Simon.

Simon, @ around 23:00 minutes mark the 2 on box 4 forces the 2 to be on a straight line on box 7! Then that removes the two on the last column, which resolves the 2 on the bottom right corner and, after that, the puzzle cracks open!! Anyway, great solve as always!

At 23:30 i spotted a XY-Wing instead of your 189-row 8 step. It is 37 in r7c2, 27 in r8c3 and 23 in r8c9. All fields that the 37 and 23 BOTH can see cannot be 3 because we couldn't fill in anything into r8c3. So r8c12 cannot be 3 so the 3 in box 7 must be in r7c2. Also the technique that Simon was using at around 18:30 is called W-Wing.

Apparently it's called an XY-Chain -- which I've never come across before. It's considered "harder" than a WXYZ-Wing which is about where I gave up learning new techniques. My problem is that everyone teaches you the patterns but not any techniques for spotting them.
@jovi_al
@jovi_al 3 года назад
Without the X-wing on 3s (which is not mandatory) it's a W-wing, but because r5c1 and r5c9 happened to be bivalue because of the X-wing, it becomes an XY-Chain. I did not put that X-wing out in the open, so if you didn't find it, you could still get the 4 and 6 in the corners via the W-wing :)

23:37, because I had insights along the way. I hadn't watched Simon perform the puzzle more than I already had at any point. One insight I had was asking can both the top left and the bottom right corner of the puzzle be 1? The answer based on row 5 is no, which revealed at least one of the two corners contained a 2, which revealed the other corners to be a 4 and a 6. This made me entirely miss the 3 x-wing, and the 6 being revealed by that x-wing was actually unnecessary for my purposes.

When you mentioned the corners were probably weak, you were right. It didn't change much in the solve for me, but there was an X-Wing in the corners on 2s. Wasn't as useful as the 3 X-Wing, but it was there regardless. Edit: Upon finishing the video, I realized the latter half of the solve, after the W-Wing, would have been quite a bit faster if you had noticed the 2 X-Wing.

INSTEAD OF CRANKSHAFT which implies the non-aligned pieces go different directions, (not to mention wide split between the aligned pair) I suggest calling it a broken wing (as in, a broken X-wing) defining it as "an aligned a-b pair and an unaligned b-c pair that at a right angle aligns to both" AND THE SIGNIFICANCE BEING that the "b" (in this puzzle 1-1) cannot be on both unaligned pairs but it may be c-c (2-2 as happened) OR b-c (1-2 / 2-1 the other possibilities)

I'm always so excited when I spot something before Simon, but today I spot something he never saw. The 3 that he got from the 189 logic to get the 7 and finally the 3 and led him to solve the entire thing in only a couple minutes could've been found quite a few minutes previous through using the side wings logic. Nothing big, just thought I'd point it out :)

I usually go through the digits 1-9 one by one, getting as many pencil marks and digits as possible using the Snyder notation. After going through the digits the grid has or course changed so i go through the digits again. I keep cycling through until i can't make any more progress in this way. Then i switch to looking at each individual box and getting pencil marks in those. After that rows and columns. Then i go back through cycling through the digits again. I can complete most classic sudokus this way relatively quickly (besides the handcrafted ones that need specific techniques).

It took me an embarrassingly long 93 minutes. I half-noted the w-wing pattern fairly early on, but at that point I was thinking that the corners would have to be opposite digits to be useful, and moved on when I couldn't immediately determine that. I subsequently wasted a lot of time on other fruitless hunts, before finally coming back to it, at which point I recognized that there was always at least a 2 there. The second big time-eater was how long it took me to locate the hidden 2357 quad in row 8, and its inverse triple, which led the final solution. A good puzzle, overall, but definitely not a push-over.

Rather than using the "times trick" to get the 7 in Box 8. I noticed that there is an x-wing on 2's between Box 3 & box 6 as 2 can only appear in column 7 & 8. This ruled out 2 in column 8 in Box 9. That's what broke the rest of the puzzle for me.

@oulajp 3 года назад
2's in box 7 can only be at r8c1 and r8c3 at that point, and that rules out 2 in r8c9. That's what cracked it for me.

I'm still using Windows 7 on my desktop. I usually don't have any problems but whenever I've had any issues, a little program I got from Bleeping computer has saved my day: combofix. It just seems to work wonders. So if all else fails you might wanna give it a try.

There was an easier deduction at @23:56 2 can only go to row 8 on box 7, ruling out 2 on r8c9

24 minutes here. Good puzzle! Not sure I spotted the "W-wing" people are talking about in the comments (haven't watched the video yet), but I did use a combination of X-wing and good old "if this then that, else that then this, so this cell is always 4".

17:13 I managed a Sword fish variant on 3s involving four rows and columns that eliminated that 3. After that I saw the xwing.

Good spot! A 4 row/column variant of the swordfish is called a' jellyfish'. You'll often find that if there's an x wing in 2 rows, it often corresponds with a sword fish or jellyfish in the alternate columns, (and vice versa), acting on the same cell like it did here.

I almost never do Sudoku puzzles... I don't have a lot of practice, but my mother does them all the time. decided to play along on this one. Do a bit, play to see if I went in the same logical direction, and pause again, to try and figure out the next bit. had to backtrack once due to an error, and I had to replay it a couple times to really get the whole crankshaft bit, but I did it! Took me an _abysmal_ 107 minutes, but hey, I couldn't tell you what *_year_* I last did even an easy Sudoku, much less a stumper like this! I'll take 107! :P

@24:00 when Simon points out the 9/1/8 triangle in box 7 there is another way to go.. In box 4 the 2 in c2 locks 2s into r8, making r8c9 a naked single 3.

Looks like your app recently changed the position of the corner marks to be less in the corner? (Or just on your laptop you forgot to activate the large digit mode?) I guess that helps to not overlap the corner Killer Sudoku clues, but here it looks like a lot of wasted space, and almost overlapping the center clues.

At 24:00, a much simpler deduction can be made without using New York Times puzzle magic. You ask where the 2 goes in Box 7 and what that means for the rest of the puzzle.
@AngelzWrath11
@AngelzWrath11 3 года назад
I managed to solve it without using that NY Times 1-8-9 trick that Simon used. I noticed that the 2 in column 9 could only go in box 9. That meant there could be no 2 in R7C7, which meant the only places for 2's in R7 was in box 8. Which meant R9C6 could not be a 2 and had to be a 9. And from there the puzzle broke open in a very similar way
@pietndala7394
@pietndala7394 3 года назад
At 24:04 the New York time trick was not necessary...2 in row 5, meant 2 could be in column 1 or 3 in row 8, thereby eliminating a 2 in a 23 pair in column 9, thus leaving a 3.
