I would agree that the corporate life was sold to millennials, probably due to the creation of pensions, increased healthcare costs, and credit in the late 70's. But times are so different now, those promises yield lower returns, real wages are stagnant and there are hardly any easy and enjoyable opportunities. Retirement doesn't even look like a feasible option to many, or comes at a more extreme cost than it did for our parents. With these new circumstances and the information at our reach I think it's a brilliant time to be creative with our lives. I hope that many take that time to develop their own small businesses like you're promoting. Thanks, that was real and great.
I had someone tell me once that most people miss the forest for the trees, but I was the type that missed the trees for the forest. I would lose the small pieces, and become overwhelmed by the big picture. This talk does a good job of showing how to focus on the trees. Get enough of them together, the forest will come about on its own.
I had a crisis at 47, I was laid off and my Daughter 20 had a crisis no one wanted to hire her. I decided this was never going to happen again. My daughter got a dream job working for friends who own their own business. I'm on a joint venture with my husband and friends and working out a plan for another business. In short it is hard but I'm no longer suffocating in a job that was...just a meaningless job. We're not robots people so stop treating yourself as one.
THIS SPOKE TO ME. I'm only 18 but I moved out at 14 in pursuit of a dance career... after devoting all my time to it, I realized that I would have very little creative freedom, and if I continued the same path I wouldn't get to be the 'artist' that had been falsely promised. Fell into such a deep depression that i couldn't get out of bed a few days per week, impulsively cut my own bangs and fantasized about my death all the time...this continued for two years and now I'm trying to heal. I'm still having dance in my life but I'm going to go about a career in a more 'freeing' way. After I get the psychological help which I currently need:)
Stay strong. Expectations are what can make our life a cage. My advice, enjoy your passion without setting any specific goal. You’re very young and have ALL of your life in front of you. You’ll find your way by cultivating your passions but mostly by understanding who you truly are and therefore, what you truly want. Dancing might be your main thing NOW, but you will come across many phases of your life that will turn things around multiple times. Don’t get stuck in expectations, learn to freely love your passions. Do you dance because it makes you happy? Then keep doing so !
you are an amazing public speaker! It was a pleasure to hear your thoughts, opinions and experiences. You are very articulate, thorough, and come across as legitimately sincere. Great Delivery!!!!
I am going through a life crisis myself, as 22 yo that is failing university. I did already figure out the points she made, but the hard part is figuring out how to work on them. The only way I see myself getting through is by dropping the studies, start working, get out of this 'trapping' enivrement and invest the money in the things I want to achieve (successful RU-vid channel). But the big problem with that is making my friends and family understand me. Most just say that I am wasting my opportunities that way, that I should know better, that I should think about not raising my kids in poverty (I don't have kids and I am still single, so it is not like those kids will be a factor in the upcoming years) etc. As if university is the only way to get happiness in life, but at the moment it is also the thing crushing life out of me.
I am quite a bit older than you are, but here are my thoughts. If you fail in college, so what? That is not the end of the world. Life is more about failing and learning from those failures than it is successes. You have to learn to fail before you can be successful. I am not saying you would do this, but just think of how you would handle it if you started your youtube channel and a year or two in were making no money from it and had very few followers and views? Would you quit? Also, as far as needing to convince others to understand you, there is no need to do that. If they don't, they don't and I promise you, it will not be the end of the world. If school is the right place for you, do not quit, just because you are failing. Work harder and do whatever you have to do to pass. You will learn valuable lessons from doing so. I am sure that you will be able to get through your situation and make the right decisions for you. Just make sure you are doing what is best for you and for the right reasons and good luck with your future endeavors!
Brecht, don't listen to your friends and family. If you know what you want to do even if it sounds crazy, then do it :) You will find out what happens in the end, it's your life not theirs. Live your life, do what you want to do :)
This was very good. I'm not sure about starting a business being the specific conclusion that suits me, but it was very well explained. The first four minutes spoke to me more clearly about where my life is than I think anything else ever has.
Thank you Miss Bailey, articulated quite well. Easy to understand and hopeful I will attempt to execute. I certainly create, rely, and more importantly believe my own rationalization behind remaining lazy, stagnated, and overall negative thinking that I use. Allowing me to not try beyond that written, albeit, enthusiastic plan. thank you for your example of life crisis as it spoke to not what you were going through, but tools to challenge folks like myself, who crave action , yet only stay in perpetual daydream phase, rather i call it spectator phase! u rock Miss Bailey. Smiles TCS
Great job ... had to pause a bit and "reframe" you. Now I know where your passion comes from. Appreciate all of your customer service; products; programs; and, affiliation. Don't stop giving and working on your legacy! It's a great pursuit and the rewards are awesome indeed.
Is there any correlation between giving ted talks and suffering from anxiety? Because it was mentioned in the last four or five talks I've watched. Seems like everyone on the internet has anxiety. Just curious
I’ve started a business at 25. This is a great idea. We need learn about who we are and who we can become through creative decision making. We must learn to take risks. Great idea. Not so great talk.
I would say my generation (I am 20) would have a 'crisis' earlier than before because we have an innate sense of wanting to make a difference and being mega wealthy due to the celebrity society we have been conditioned woht. I am no acceptation, I AM SAT HERE RGHT NOW IN MY OFFICE JOB (FIRST EVER OB) THINKNING HOW BORING IT IS AND AM I GOING TO WASTE MY LIFE DOING SOMWTHING I DONT ENJOY AND SHOULD I START A BUSINESS, :) THAT'S WHY I UNDERTSAND WHERE SHES CMING FROM
I turned eighteen literally two weeks after the economic crises of 2008 began. I had been living on my own for almost a year. I’d say it was definitely a life crises for me. It was a HARD two years after that. You had it good.

Great talk. Thanks for sharing :D Who knows, maybe crises/other feelings which lead to increased self-reflection should be embraced as the opportunity for growth they are?
I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots, in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate, this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants, along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days. menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app.
I tried starting a business still don't feel fulfilled, not to mention its inconsistency and lack of stable business that's not the answer something else is still missing.
