Whiteflies form a major threat for many vegetable and ornamental crops. The adults can be recognized by their waxy wings. Whiteflies have well developed needle-like mouthparts. They extract sap from the underside of plant leaves and secrete honeydew. This honeydew, in turn, is a nutrient source for sooty moulds.
The female lays her eggs on the underside of young leaves. If she has not yet mated, all of the eggs will develop into males.
The eggs have a white/yellowish colour, are oblong shaped and are often deposited in circles. After one or two days, they become darker in colour.
The nymphs that emerge from the eggs are known as ‘crawlers’. Crawlers move around for several hours before settling on the leaf. They moult into their second stage and become immobile. The nymph starts to feed and begins to produce honeydew. Two further stages will follow. The nymph is flat at first, later changing into an oval, box-shaped pupa with hairs. Eventually the adult emerges.
Soon after emerging, wax is secreted over the entire body.
Adults immediately begin to penetrate the leaf with their mouth parts to feed on plant sap.

It varies a great deal depending primarily upon temperature. This video was looking at Trialeuroides, but there are hundreds of species in North America and dozens of agricultural/garden pest whiteflies, each with similar life cycles but different times of development.

So is does the whitefly go through complete or incomplete metamorphosis? I thought was a true bug so it should just have a nymph and adult stage. But it seems to have a pupal stage

@@dgpatton My experience is to buy a mosquito catcher - the one using ultra violet light & suction fan . I've got mine from Ace Hardware and use them accordingly. Don't buy cheapo ones as the bulbs might not be producing actual UV light and they do need replacement every 6 mth or so as the amount of UV will reducing all the time. I switched them on everynight for say 12 hrs and happy to report i haven't seen much of them white flies now.

@@dgpatton Hi, have you tried any "Spinosad" based product ? I had a major problem with fungus-gnats, never suspected them for such a highly destructive potential. Anyway(😅..), a single application of a spinosad insecticide was enough, also kept the plants "toxic" for some time as there were "drunk" gnats around the pots for the following weeks. Later this year, i had a Thrips infestation on my orchids - same results again 😎 Now, even though i hadn't had any real problem with Whiteflies - yet theres always a few here and there, it seemed that they were also affected. And lastly - i have a root/soil predatory mite(s) "hypoaspis miles" or a similar sp. And they seemed unharmed by the substance 👍

Forget evolution... these creatures could only be created by a God like power. I wonder if God just decided to create a white fly or if it came into existence from other God made creatures cross mating.
