I miss this game as much i miss my deceased older brother. we always play this game together after school to beat the game. after a week, we finish it. may my brother rest in peace.
You can download it in the Nintendo E-SHOP for DS.. don't know if it works for other Nintendos. You could also download the remastered version for Smartphone... it's called Salamander
23 years for me, lolol. Nice to know I wasn't the only one fruitlessly searching for "that one game that I thought was Gradius but actually wasn't". But, for now... THE SEARCH IS OVER!!!!!!!!!
The whole games soundtrack is one of the best soundtrack on that generation. Still haunts me till now. and this game is one of the best konami's made back those days
The key is to get everything maxed out early on in the game. I definitely dont max out the SPEED though, this dude is a maniac haha. The one thing to remember is at the very very end when youre making the escape and dodging the beams, the very last beam closes all the way. I nearly did no death runs a few times, but it was that damn final fully closing beam that would get me because I was too busy dodging the previous beams and forgot about the last beam.
You can have today's game graphics; I'll take games like this any day. I remember the first time I beat the third (fire) level I was listening to the Metallica Master of Puppets album. Good times....good damn times....lol.
SuppaviLLin SuPpAvIlLiN for sure. But funny thing is that i learned this code much more after the time i first used it. unfortunately, in 1994 in Russia there was no books or magazines with da cheat codes for nes games (actually, there wasn't even nes, it was china clones named dendy). So me and my dad had a maximum 3rd level completed. Then one day after another defeat i started to push random buttons in anger, and can you guess my surprise when i got those extra lives at start)) Holy shit, it was really fantastic, one of those magic child memories) I felt myself as a hacker or smth like dat)))
That music right after you hit the start button to begin the game: priceless! It starts off with such a wonderful tone of adventure, as if to say, you're in it now, buckle up pilots of the Vic Vipers because this game is going to show you some ish! I remember being in love with the music, the game play and the premise of this game especially since I was a fan of Gradius. Two players, different gameplay perspectives, forcefields and warps throughout some stages! All I can say is the Nostaglia is overwhelming. It feels great!
My childhood memory indeed. You've made an impressive run. Back then Konami made so many great games, most of which were pioneering and innovative for their time, and have aged very well to this date. Nowadays there are rarely anything like Salamander, not even solely in terms of art style.
Just picked up a copy today for my slowly growing NES cartridge collection ( something I should have never gotten rid of) but difficult is definitely the right word.. I remember playing this game through til the end with my Older brother.. now its taken me 25mins to beat the first level!!
I know right!? Why even have the first gradius game instead of this? I know Gradius is a nes port to the original version and the box says "Best selling games in Japan" but I think I'm just gonna stick to this version because it's awesome
Excellent. Super jeu, et belle époque. On était pas encore encore dans ce monde de geeks. On utilisé les jeux vidéo juste pour se distraire et pas pour éviter de voir ou de parler à d' autres personnes.
I remember the arcade..... this game drove me crazy back then!!!! I'm 44 now and i still miss when i used to skip school just to play at the arcade center, hahaha!! 🇬🇹😊 25:00 the sphinx 😍😍😍😍😍
Wow, you're a mad man! I especially loved how you risk it all at 24:52 getting near the walls and circling about simply because there seems to be nothing better to do at that point!
Aaah, this game :) I used to play this with my dad back in the day. It was something that we had, never played it with my brother, nor my sister. It was just him and me. Brings back good memories, happier times. Thanks for the upload, watched it with my dad today and his eyes just got teary eyed :)
This video inspired me to attempt my own no death run. Was able to make it to the last stage the jumping maoi heads right before the salamander without dying. Practice makes perfect. Great run! 👍
It's funny to be able to watch someone play a game you haven't played in like 30 years and still remember where 1ups are lol we used to play the fuck out of this joint back in the day
Seriously, there must be some guy that goes through RU-vid and dislikes random videos. You never seem to see a liked video without a single dislike... Great play through, BTW.
I played this game on the Wii Virtual console... Never made it past the solar flares in level 3. Probably for the best I never could have made those fast twists and turns in level 5... This game is brutal!!!
in a tie for fave nes games with bionic commando. I remember there was a magazine or something (probably EGM) that you take a picture of the screen when you beat Life Force, then you MAIL in the pic (yes a piece of paper with an image on it, in an envelope with a stamp) and you got something. I definitely did it, but I don't recall the prize. Good times.
In the days of Funcoland, I bought a copy of this game only because it was a full package (box and everything). I had very limited knowledge of Gradius at the time and didn't realize this was the second in the series. I just wanted the box. Years later this became one of my all-time favorite NES titles and I ended up losing the box.
Am very happy to find all the lost treasure in this lockdown and am truly living those moments once again. Wow, no matter how advanced we are inn gaming now a days but those days are the best one.
Nice job with that last beam on the escape at the end. That one that closes all the way got me on my no death run attempt. I always forget when to move to the top to avoid dying.
Wow, my dad and I used to play this game all the time when I was younger - I don't think I've seen it in over 20 years! When we got a SNES we upgraded to Super R-Type. The irony is that I could rinse games like this when I was 7 (and on the hardest setting) but now I'd struggle to get through the first level! Thanks so much for posting this!!
used to be one of my favorite game.. really miss those game, tried so many times to complete this game and after all this years found it in youtube :) nostalgia
The things I remember and loved most about this game is that the stage music was great, but got better and better with every level...and that some of the levels resembled the insides of a body lol, except for the random Pharaoh head boss stage LOL
Yeah even gradius doesn't give a 30 live code, it just give you items and weapons, I heard there is a 30 live code in gradius but mine is not working on my nes classic edition (mabye it does work for some people, I guess)
There are actually two versions of this game; however, Lifeforce is the more easily recognized version. There were also two machine variants: one gave you ship powerups straight, the other has the gradius progress bar. AFAIK the only version to get the gradius progress bar treatment console-wise is the NES version (though some Salamander cabinets do this as well).
I used to play this all the time as a kid (born in 82). My fondest memories are that of playing with my oldest brother. He was always "blue" and I was always "orange". He used to feed me all the power ups near the end of the "Egyptian" level because I was constantly dying. By this time, I was already pressing "Select + Up".
owww. this reminds me of my happy childhood oowww good times. thanks for posting this video this and contra I used to be so good at this game that i once finished the game with 13 or 14 lives not sure exactly it was a game i used to play from breakfast to super.
This game was released in the Middle East during the late 80"s for MSX console game under the name SALAMANDER by Konami... with more powerful sound and game effects... Oh.. Those were the days before my hair turns into snow white..
my cousins and brother would play this for hours.. especially with the contra code :) the best thing about this game is the fucking music. i still find myself humming this 1st stage music
Wow. I never knew how to get past that last one. I was getting ready to call you out because I always thought that last one made it impossible to not die at least once 😀
