Life in a small town in the North of Canada is amazing in so many ways. The nature is unparalleled. My home where I have lived my whole life is in Northwest Territories in a little town called Hay River. It is a special place, and this video will give you a taste of the town, surrounding area and all it has to offer.

You know, it's fine. Many smaller countries and more rural communities make due with the resources that nature provides. In Eastern Europe, many people still have family (mostly pensioners) that have a small villa with a plot of land that they cultivate every year for potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and beans. It's a must, but the soil there is pretty rich. Just the rain is getting more seasonal, still stronger in the Fall/Winter, but pretty dry in mid to late Summer. Nothing wrong with having an agricultural way of life at all. Many people are wanting that but can't afford the land.

Oooh am so happy to find this video! Lived in Hay River in the early to mid 90's, a lot has changed but some not, like the purple high school. My husband proposed to me at Alexandra Falls in the dead of winter on that lookout, with the partially frozen falls running. Thanks for the memories!

I used to stop off in Hay River a lot in the 90s and 20s heading from Edmonton to Fort Simpson. A good stop off point. Nice community, and I miss the North! There used to be a great restaurant on the main street run by a Chinese family. Not sure what it was called but it was great.

Petrina is a real sweetie and a gifted travel host. I'll tell you one thing about Hay River and Yellow Knife however. You can get to both of these places in.the family car, but they easily qualify as adventure travel. You will definitely learn first hand about the vastness of Canada by going there. These two places are literally at the end of the road. It will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment to explore there.

Back in the day (1970's) when the school was first built the students were given the task of selecting the colour. They chose purple and by this video it seems to have been always purple. I'm sure the students chose the colour as a joke, but it was not to be. The staff made it purple. In addition, I lived in Hay River when the high rise was constructed. Rumour has it they ran out of rebar toward the end of construction and the last three floors do not have rebar in the poured cement walls. The bright bulb who authorized a high rise at that time was off the wall. It looked really stupid sticking way up into the sky in a northern setting when most other buildings were one story. The mayor at the time was Don Stewart.

You guys seriously make me want to live there. I'm an American, grew up in rural Arkansas, but even down here, things are getting strange, and with advances in AI and automation, political unrest, and climate change, things are only going to get stranger. I feel like little towns like yours are going to be an oasis through the coming storms.

Didn't see them in your video! While I was there we built the synchrolift, the marine elevator used to pull NTs barges out before freezeup. Interesting piece of engineering. I think the most afffecting thing I saw in Hay River was across the water from the sychrolift. There was an Anglican mission church still there then, abandoned but still standing. I can hardly imagine what life would be like for the missionaries, miles and miles from any other Europeans, trying to teach and heal the local people. It was obviously hard to keep warm, for one thing. One of the closets was completely lined with pages from the Illustrated London News.
