I feel so many people dont know what to expect when they come here nowadays, and it results in lots of people being afraid to leave the city. As someone who grew up in rural Ontario, I believe the countryside is where true Canadian culture is found. Some people dont recognize the feeling of freedom when you have space to run around.
Welcome to anyone wanting to come to Canada! If I may make a recommendation, understand how big Canada is and how varied the geography, weather, and culture are. Laws and political views can also change from one province to another so you may want to research that as well. Oh, and wind chill, learn about wind chill. The most mild winters are along the south west coast and Vancouver Island.
Everyone goes on about the cold weather in Canada, but the summers can be very warm, depending on the Canadian region that you live in, it can rival temperatures of countries further south.
When I'm about to pass someone on the sidewalk as I'm biking, I say 'excuse me' as I approach to let them know to get out of the way, 'Sorry' as I pass to let them know I'm not trying to be a dick, and 'thank you' as I leave to let them know their small act of generosity is appreciated.
Omg! I was not getting the word for what I was feeling since last few days and it is culture shock. Thankyou for sharing this information this helped me a lot to overcome my culture shock.
It's not the cold that gets you.....it's the dampness!!! A wet cold is VERY different from a dry cold. If you're gonna be in Southern Ontario (where we're surrounded by the Great Lakes) it's a LOT colder feeling than other parts not near water. So beware of dampness!!! LAYERS LAYERS LAYERS!!!!! Tank tops under short sleeves under long sleeves under a sweater, scarves, gloves (though mittens are warmer) and hats. Waterproof winter jackets (it blocks the dampness better). Also.....wear tight clothing underneath baggier clothing (layers layers layers!!!!), it allows heat to circulate under the sweater, keeps you warmer. Wear multiple pairs of socks at a time. Taller boots are better than shorter ones. And remember....IT WILL END AND SPRING WILL COME AGAIN!!!!! Seasonal depression can be common, it gets dark early and the Sun rises late in the morning. Seems like it's always dark and cold all winter. Remember it's TEMPORARY!!!! The Sun WILL return!!!!! Spring is a magical time here, Summer is too. The Summer heat gets to be intense too because of humidity. Drink lots of water, wear Sunscreen, make use of shade, and when you need to take a short break (a breather) take it!!!! The heat gets intense too, same thing though....it WILL end and Fall will come and the heat fades.....till the next year. But it's all wonderful and beautiful and WORTH it!!!!! Sending lots of love to anyone who read this. Xoxoxo
Hey keep pushing on! I really enjoyed your insight and even with a touch of comedy which in itself felt really well suited. I hope you pursue some comedic ambition as it seems your a natural in :) ps thx for your international support as a Canadian as thats who we are as a country
The weather XD If you exercise outside everyday, no matter if it's -40 or 40, rain, snow or shine, your body will adapt and you'll feel comfortable. If you're inside all the time, you're only gonna complain about the weather all the time.
No, it is not just you, the confusion you see in stores is ppl trying to calculate how much they will really pay for things. We never know really. It is really frustrating.
