I know a lot of friends from Tianjin who work in Beijing, and none of them would move there :p They take the inter-city train in the morning, it's pretty mindblowing how it's under 30mins.
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 5 лет назад
It's crazy how fast the train gets here from Tianjin, quicker than going from one side of the city to another. haha well that is a preference, Tianjin is a nice city and much cheaper I think it's great for families and a lot more relaxing.... but if you like city life and want to party and it be a bit more westernised then you can't beat Beijing!.
@bobhuang2944
@bobhuang2944 4 года назад
The irony is that it takes only 30 minutes going from Tianjin to Beijing by high-speed rail, but going from my home in Tianjin to the train station is an hour, and another hour to go from Beijing train station to my other home in Beijing by subway, or forever by car...

Amazing video Nico! I had been waiting for this one. I am glad you covered almost everything here. One thing that I wanted to ask. Is it like we can find fruits and vegetables and other grocery items cheaper in one district of Beijing than the other? Because many people have told me that you have to hunt the cheap places because otherwise groceries are pretty expensive, especially near the major universities. And I was also told that wudaokou is expensive but you said beer is cheap there so I don't know what to believe xD
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 5 лет назад
Thank you I'm pleased you found it helpful! To be honest I haven't really shopped for groceries in other districts only near where I live. Most fruit and vegetables near me are pretty reasonable especially if you shop in season. Everything is comparable though I am happy to spend money on these and cook as I enjoy that but a lot of the time people just eat out as you can get noodles for ¥10. Wudaokou is a student area so there might be some expensive parts but there are many student bars where you can get beer for pretty cheap. It all boils down to where you are from and what you are used to. Beijing is a capital city so it is of course more expensive, but I'm from the UK and London is so much more expensive then here. Do you know where you will be living when you come to Beijing?
@simranchawla6
@simranchawla6 5 лет назад
@@Nicofilms I'd be living either in PKU dorms or in wudaokou from September this year. And I am from India, from the capital but we still get things really cheap here so I don't know how expensive it is going to be for me in Beijing. On top of that, I am vegetarian xD So, since I'd be doing a hell lot of cooking myself so grocery expense is a real worry for me.

Hi that's awesome that you are coming to Beijing. What time of year are you coming? Unfortunately, I think the Forbidden City tickets that you get in advance need to be booked by a Chinese person. When you come to China your hotel should be able to book these for you. You don't need to get a ticket in advance for Jingshan park I believe. They are called Baozza they are a brand from Shanghai that make them and they are amazing. You can also by these frozen from some places. Didi only works with the internet you are right.

@Nicofilms 5 лет назад
Hi Julie, yes many people wear masks on bad days but the pollution is not as bad as everyone thinks. You can see on your AQI on your phone if its bad and take precautions. It's a bit like weather some days are bad and some are not. I actually feel it is better here in Beijing than when I lived in Nanjing last year. We also have an air filter in our house which keeps the air clean.
@comradestrawberry1876
@comradestrawberry1876 5 лет назад
The trick is 3 letters: N95 :p N95 is an industrial standard mask grade made by 3M that can filter 80nm+ non-oil based pollutants at 95% efficiency, and it's very cheap as well. Honestly though, these years (after 2012-ish) the pollutions aren't that bad. Maybe a few bad days in the winter.

Are you an expat? What was your transition to China like? Would you say it's a better place to carve out a future for those discouraged by life in the west?
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 5 лет назад
Yes I am an expat I have been living in China for 2 and a half years. China has given me more opportunities than the UK could I don't regret moving here at all. The transition really depends on what you are like and how much you have traveled. We found it quite easy as we were in South America prior to moving but I know some people it was their first time out of the country and it can be a culture shock.

Thanks for the answer, I definitely want to do more research on how to begin that process. Great youtube channel, I think channels like this help facilitate greater empathy and understanding for those who might otherwise be led towards (racist) hostility towards countries that compete with us

Looks pretty expensive. Are you able to save some money if you earn 20k/month?
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 5 лет назад
It really depends on where you are from originally to compare it to. I am from the UK and it is far cheaper in comparison only the rent is more expensive but if I lived in London then Beijing would be cheaper for rent. I also share with my boyfriend so rent/bills/food etc would essentially be half as we share. We are still able to save money but we also have two incomes coming in which makes it easier. I know lots of people who don't live with a partner though in shared housing which are saving just fine. It also depends on what sort of social life you have. If you only eat western food and drink craft beer then chances are you wouldn't save much.
