I was in Lyon a couple of weeks ago and I wanted myself to communicate in French. So I tried to refresh my memory long before my visit! First, I would start a conversation saying that my level is not that high so that I would be allowed to mix English and French when needed 😜 Truth is most of the times I would sound so funny 'cause neither English nor French is my native language! However, I strongly believe that learning languages, keeps our brain young and if I stayed one month in Lyon💗 j' ecriverais tout le texte en français 😍

bizarrely, the 2 examples you gave are exactly the same gender in both French and Spanish. le savon, el jabón, el sombrero, le chapeau. it is very rare that a masculine word in Spanish is a feminine word in French and vice versa. With genders, you have a MASSIVE advantage knowing Spanish.

En todo caso, jabón y sombrero también son masculinos en español - lol

Kudos for doing what you did! I've dated a foreigner for several years, and I've seen how much work it means for you to learn to communicate with us in our native language. There's no better proof of love than that! And don't you be too self-conscious or shy : first your French is already good (Vincent seems like a great teacher), and second, there's nothing we like more than a little accent and some hesitation! (God knows I did!) Good luck on your journey, hope you'll love living in our country!

I decided during Covid that I was going to finally learn French. I don't have a French spouse and don't live in France but having a Tudor once a week and a group class once a week is helping me. Yes, it is happening slowly but I've decided it is truly a journey, not a destination!

That's amazing. Learning a new language is never easy, at least for me. Just keep going. I noticed I've progressed most when I practice speaking, so if you can, find someone you can have a language exchange with. That usually helps a lot. Yeah, just don't stop, you will begin to understand sooner than you think. I'm actually shocked at how much progress I've made. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate you.

I am learning French also (mostly through Duolingo for now) and have the luxury of having a wife that speaks French fairly fluently, but it is a bit of a slog to get to the point where I can start to actually have conversations with her and learn things beyond what Duolingo and a few podcasts have been teaching me. I also have some Spanish and agree that it helps *a little*. It sure as hell does not help with pronunciation. Hoping to see some more videos from you, most especially about how you are finding Lyon and adjusting to living in France in general. You're engaging on camera. Keep it up!

Hey, Thank you so much. I sincerely appreciate you sharing your story. It's very cool to meet someone with a similar experience. That's awesome. And yes I'm working on writing something I love to do in France now that I'm adapting. Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot.

Hey there! I just randomly found your channel. I am the opposite of you! Haha. I am from Lyon and I moved to California 10 years ago for love as well. I now live in TN, but I'm trying to get a full remote job to live between France and the USA. My husband is from the US and he did live with me in Lyon for 5 months prior to my move to the US. He went to L'alliance Francaise for classes which is in Guillotière. I would highly recommend these classes as he went from not speaking a word of French to being able to have a (ok) conversation with my only-french-speaking dad in only 3 months! Anyways. I'll actually be home for Christmas. I'm glad you like Lyon. I miss it so much!! Hope you have the best time! (also, I subscribed!! -- because I will take anything I can see from my hometown!! so keep the videos coming!)

Oh wow! So great to hear from you and thank you for your kind words and support. It's always great to meet others who understand such a situation and the challenges that come with these types of relationships of marrying someone from another country. Love can be incredible. So cool that you will visit for Christmas. I'll be posting sometime soon. I've been writing scripts and have a lot of videos to organize. I appreciate your kindness and support. People's messages motivate me to keep going. Merci Beaucoup.

Hello! You live in Lyon???? Have a great day! 🌹 to learn a language you should never rely on anyone. If you’re by yourself your brain will be on « survivor mode » and you’ll learn quicker.

I clicked on the video thinking "why would anyone not want to learn the language of the place they live in?" but I now know it's not the case. Kudos for putting in the effort! Your French accent is wayyy better than my English accent.

I am in the same predicament. I’m also bilingual in English and Spanish, and made the same assumptions about French. I also lived in Japan for three years and did not become fluent in the language, though I did get to A B1 level of fluency, but once I came back to the states, I never practiced again for 25 years and lost it. now I want to learn French as I’m planning to retire there. Hey, you sounded really good at the end of the video. Bravo et bon courage! 😊

You hit the nail right on the head. I'll do it for a while and then put it off. I go to France every year, because we have an apartment there, and rely too much on my friends who speak French. Yea, tutor sounds like the way to go.

Hey I also live in Lyon and im attending a group french class, it really improved me a lot.. May i know why you prefer to have one on one learning? at first that was my preference but attending group classes and having group activities are more interactive

For sure, especially a language like Japanese. I lived in Japan for two years, and I have Japanese family, and I had a lot of trouble with Kanji and trying to remember counters. My suggestion is to never stop, and I wish you luck on your Japanese learning. You can do it! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and support. I hope you are able to learn Japanese and have the opportunity to discover all that lovely country has to offer.

I feel your pain! I am studying Portuguese to pass A2 level! Next will be French since we planning a move to France in about five years for our next adventure! What a minefield is Portuguese ! Love the culture and people! The language kicks my butt daily!
