I'm American and have lived in Taiwan for 12 years now and, I must say, it is a truly special place. The people are so genuinely kind and caring and there is such a true spirit of what they call 公德心 or civic morality here. What many may not realize is Taiwan really does have a thriving democracy (complete with a referendum process and high turnout) where the government genuinely works for the people. I can't express how tragic it would be for the Taiwanese to lose what they have here and fall to an autocracy.
My admiration to Taiwan. I was there once when not smart phones were available. People always help me when I asked for orientation. They were always very kind

Taiwan is also one of the friendliest place on Earth. Everyone who visited always talk about how friendly and kind everyone is living here. It's a truly civil society in the most sincere sense of the word. Yet due to China, they have no UN seat and no direct diplomatic relations with almost no country on Earth. Everyone has turned their backs on Taiwan, and yet they became almost a model nation with strong, forward looking economy, progressive social trends (first Asian nation to legalize same sex marriage), best medical system in the world, wonder people, and the legendary food scene that is famous in Asia. This is one of the most special places in the world.
Pretty sure most nations in the UN voted to move recognition from ROC to PRC. And Taiwan is hardly a model nation: case in point - domestic politics there is about to get them annihilated by the Chinese.

The Taiwanese people have been under threat of war for decades. There's no point for them to worry that they might all die tomorrow, and just try to live well. That doesn't mean that they are defenseless, but I suppose that if you cannot stop China from being a lousy neighbor, why live in fear? Now to go through some points directly pasted out of the 1979 China/US Joint agreement document (One China Policy): 1: "Neither should seek hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region or in any other region of the world and each is opposed to efforts by any other country or group of countries to establish such hegemony." The CCP have broken this agreement by claiming the Taiwan Straight and The South China Sea as their sovereign territory upsetting countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and others. This is illegal claim not recognised throughout the world. The CCP are also disputing several Japanese islands as well. So this agreement is already null and void as the CCP have broken the agreement and are seeking hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region. 2:"The Government of the United States of America acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China." This sentence does not state that the US agrees with China's position, it simply acknowledges it. E.g I can acknowledge that my friend is a Republican even though my political stance may be a Democrat. THIS SENTENCE STATES THERE IS ONE CHINA BUT DOES NOT STATE THAT TAIWAN IS PART OF CHINA. @@NickvonZ Some more of my work for you only if you feel like more reading. lol (Its pretty long) Enjoy and stay strong Taiwan First of all TAIWAN is not a province of China and hasn't been since 1895. Secondly there is no reunification with Taiwan. Lets get it straight the CCP and even mainland China have no sovereign claim to Taiwan and I will prove it to you. The CCP distorted version of history is BS. After being discovered by the Portuguese, it was the Dutch who first colonized the island of Formosa in 1626. When the Dutch initially colonized the island was there a major war between China and the Dutch over Taiwan?? Of course not. This proves that China had no claim to the region prior to 1683. In fact in 1683, the Kangxi Emperor said specifically that “Taiwan is outside our empire and of no great consequence” and even offered to have the Dutch buy it back. When the Dutch arrived in 1626 most of the population were the Yuanzhumin or Gaoshan people and a few Chinese fishermen who got washed ashore. So please tell of the great battle for Formosa between the Dutch and Chinese in 1626???? There was none. So where is the claimed long history. lol The CCP claim that Taiwan has been part of China historically yet the Qing dynasty first took control of the West and North of Formosa in 1683 but not the entire island. It was not until 1885 that the island of Formosa first become a province of the Qing Empire. This demonstrates that the island of Formosa was a province of China for only 10 years as Japan occupied the island by 1895. So please explain to me the great long history of Formosa to China? China claimed only parts of the island for just over 200 years. Some simple arithmetic clearly displays that 200 years of partial occupation out of 5000 years of history is merely 0.04% of China's history for part of the island only. Therefore Taiwan has NOT been a significant part of China's history. It must also be remembered the Qing government signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, by which it cedes sovereignty over Taiwan to Japan, the fact is that China historically has been a land based power and have no significant history in Taiwan. If it had not been for the escape and invasion of the ROC in 1949 the rightful owner of Formosa would be Japan as demonstrated by the Senkaku Islands still belonging to Japan today. To further prove my point, when the ROC first arrived most of the locals wore Kimonos and spoke Japanese. The CCP and mainland China have no sovereignty or territorial integrity of Taiwan and with the CCP's increased intimidation to Taiwan has resulted in increased tensions with many countries around the world. Back off CCP and maintain the status quo as China has no significant historical claim to the island..

I've been to Taiwan and it's a lovely country with vibrant people who treasure their democracy and civil freedoms. The parallels are hard to ignore between Taiwan and Ukraine - both thriving democracies aligned with more Western mores and values and both threatened by a large Communist neighbor run by a strongman who cares little for individual freedom and feels threatened by what their smaller counterparts represent. I've been to Hong Kong too and the people there reminded me a lot more of the Taiwanese than the mainland Chinese in their culture and mannerisms. It's sad how Beijing has broken its promises to Hong Kong citizens and I wish the UK had never given it back to them. Here's hoping Ukraine succeeds in their war against their oppressor and that Taiwan never has to do the same.

Taiwan's military needs massive reform and change. It really is not very good right now. Ukraine has shown that its possible for a military to professionalize itself very quickly. I’m pretty sure they have been persuaded that US will fight for them or else what’s the point of the Japanese base. Ukraine had crimea as a warning and it won them some very valuable years to prepare not sure Taiwan will have the same so I agree with what u recommend. However there needs to be an urgency among the public sentiment which it doesn’t have…. Similar to the militarisation if Japan. The public does not feel the urgency which is why I don’t think much will change.
Ya, it is amazing how so many criticize the United States - but yet when they need help the first country they call on is the United States. Countries need to learn to take care of themselves FIRST. America will always help democratic countries they are allied with. But countries need to do better themselves. The United States has given ENORMOUS aid to Ukraine and also a lot of training. It is nice to see it working. I seriously doubt China will invade Taiwan, but if they do they will soon realize that America equipment and American training are superior - the Russians are finding this out the hard way. America is far from perfect - but without the aid of America most of the world, if not all of it, would be controlled by dictators like they have in China and Russia. There is literally NO other country in the world that can give the money, the training, and the military help America gives.
Taiwan (=republic of china) will be the same fate as South Vietnam in the past. I am South Korean, interestingly, in South Korea, South Vietnam was called Free Vietnam and Taiwan was called Free China.

I was studying in Taiwan as China had its warships surrounding the island and was just miles from Pelosi in Taipei when she arrived. It was strange to see how little people felt bothered by Chinas actions. It’s almost difficult to describe the distance that China is from many peoples minds there. I love Taiwan and think of the people and places I saw there often.

Most Taiwanese people know deep down China won't harm them. What China is after are the treacherous separatists. It has been this way for decades and people know it.

In one condition, that is: The U.S. will fight for The free Republic of China (Taiwan's formal country name). Taiwan won't survive its freedom without the U.S' protection.
As much as I appreciate 60 Minute's effort to cover Taiwanese attitude towards a potential invasion from or unification with China, this piece is a typical one-sided news with biased reporting. One example is that Chinese government has repeated expressed concerns over pineapple with beetles disease problem (if you do a single Google search you will know), and this is PARTLY for the biosecurity from imports (I am not denying the political motivations behind this move, since it's apparent). It's worth noting that Taiwan is not fully pro-independence, and the cross-Taiwan Strait (China-Taiwan) relationship is far complicated than mainstream medias tend to cover. True, the mainstream stance in Taiwan is to maintain the status quo for now. Most of people would neither want a declaration of independence nor a unification. I have friends from Taiwan who have genuine Chinese friends and they have wishes for a peaceful unification. I also have Chinese friends who see Taiwan people as their countryman but appreciate Taiwan's democracy and economic status. The official government of Taiwan is the government of Republic of China (ROC), which has ruled mainland from 1912 to 1949, and has virtually no control of the PRC after the defeat in the civil war with the Communists, and this laid the foundation of the historical complexity of Cross-Taiwan Strait relationship. The ROC constitution claims the sovereignty of mainland, while the PRC claims Taiwan as well. It's not the same from Russia-Ukraine relationship. People from China and Taiwan speak the same languages, although there are undoubtfully distinguishes as they have been divided for seven decades. There are wishes among people from two sides that want a unification, and the question is how to achieve that and how both parties are trustworthy to each other. It's also worth noting that China has not been this aggressive over the last 70 years since the falloff of Republic of China government in the mainland. The ceasefire began in 1979, when China realized it was time to (unofficially) live peacefully with the fact that that Taiwan has its own governing entity. There was time when the two sides had increased cooperations, communications and trades. At least at some points in history (in the early 2010s), China has shown candidacy to a peaceful unification, and unfortunately the hope dimmed after the DPP came into power and China became desperate. China gave tremendous subsidies to Taiwanese agriculture and Taiwanese capital investiment in China until after 2016 when the trend gradually reversed. I wish Taiwan can preserve their thriving democracy and there is no war between China and Taiwan. Taiwanese are lovable and kind people, so do Chinese. People need to realize that there are stories that mainstream media failed to cover. They may not present a full picture of the situation, and they tend to be more biased in places they are not entirely familiar with. They tend to describe a radical and imminent situation that politician can exploit.

As a native Taiwanese from Taiwan, China. Me and my friends and family, We are proud of our own identity being Chinese. Just same like Californians are proud of being Americans. Australians listen up, we don't want to support separatists of Western Australia, same as Catalonia to Spain, California, Texas and Hawaii to USA, Scotland to UK, Corscica to France, East Germany to Germany, we respect you and we hope you guys know how to respect us.
You could bully me or attack me like ccp bot, being brainwashed. But if you go do basic research, our constitutions from Republic of China or Mainland China which is people Republic of China state clearly both sides are one China, we are the same people and same country.
Not really true. What he said only represents what he thinks, not all Taiwanese or the Taiwan government. People can have different views in Taiwan from different perspectives.

Regarding the Taiwanese people's stoicism, or almost indifference, towards China's aggressive tactics as of late, I can't help but think of a statement Dan Carlin made on his podcast a few years ago. When talking about the cold war, and the daily threat of nuclear annihilation, how did people not go crazy? How did it become normal for them? Or as Mr. Carlin put it, "If you have a gun continuously aimed at your head, how long before you continue on with your life and no longer notice it? If you are born with a gun pointing at your head, and it stays there permanently, do you ever notice it?" The Taiwanese people have been on the brink for so long, they no longer pay attention to the insane behavior of China.

Anyone who has traveled to both Taiwan and China knows why Taiwan must be preserved. Look at Hong Kong. It is vitally important to our collective human interest. China is not humanity.
Hello Billys! Just a little information for you: This video clip is just one segment from a recent episode of the TV program "60 Minutes." The entire show does last 60 minutes, including commercial breaks. This show has been running here in the United States for over fifty years. It was one of the first investigative news programs of its kind, and its format has influenced many similar programs across the world. The ticking clock has been a part of the show since the beginning. The show is surprisingly still very popular here, watched by over 8 million people each week, not including internet views.
