After the capitulation on May 8, 1945 daily life came back to Germany. Impressive footage with street scenes of Berlin in summer 1945 in a completely destructed city, e.g rubble women (so-called "Trümmerfrauen") starting to build up their houses, policemen organizing the traffic against the background of the ruins.

How on earth could German womanhood still look well-groomed, stylish, clean and fashionable in the midst of complete ruins with no electricity or running water? Boggles the mind.

It is amazing that the Germans recovered as quickly as they did. Can you imagine having to rebuild an entire city (cities).

See the world without the damage from both wars would be so interesting. So many gorgeous buildings and towns gone forever

What a shame, Berlin was such a beautiful cosmopolitan modern city before the war. You wouldn't know it from this film, yes a shame.

Seeing this in such excellent quality is amazing. To think all these people we are still seeing, are likely dead now but in the film they were so young and had a full life in front of them. It makes u wonder about how their lives were - who this person was, what struggles they personally faced at the time … we’ll never know except that this film serves as a proof of their life.

Thank you for sharing this. It's absolutely amazing to see the total devastation of Berlin. I don't know how people could recover their lives but they did, with a lot of help from other countries.

War, destruction and death was as obvious as the nose on your face but Life will go on. The saddest part of this video is the innocence of children.

amazing to see that one woman in her bombed out apartment with her red sheets or whatever. having to live in some of these bombed out cities right after the war must have been brutal !!

Despite the very evident hatred for the Allies shown by the local Germans, it's good to know that in only a few short years (Berlin Airlift), former enemies would become fast friends.
