Thank you for sharing this. I was homeless for a bit but I never heard of tunnels in my city that were squattable. (There's also 4 different police forces in my city because it is a capital, and it deals with a lot of construction and sinkholes, so I would not think it's safe physically even without social factors.) It's interesting to learn about how people live like this in other places.

When I moved to Vegas as a teen the schools were years behind where I had come from and I was bored to death. It's also much hotter here than the midwest and you have to find a way to beat the heat. So I'd ditch class and go down in the tunnels; you're not going to bump into cops wondering why you're not in class and it's much cooler down there. I'd wander for hours just to see where I'd end up. These are all over town because of how quickly we can flood. The ground just isn't suited to absorbing like it is in other parts of the country. I'd smoke cigarettes and explore and think, just teen angst stuff I guess. One of the best parts would be seeing intricate graffiti on the walls. It was the only reminder that my friends and I weren't the only ones coming down there. You'd have to flick your lighter or bring a flashlight, and every once in a while there's this big work of art. Final question, no I wasn't scared because kids have such little sense of mortality. I was just "too cool" for anything to happen to ME I guess, haha.
