I grew up in las Vegas and I can say that the tunnels definitely have their own sort of culture. I spent a lot of time in my teen years exploring and sometimes sleeping in them. This video is really interesting!

Probably your best video yet. Not some lost teenager looking for spirituality and shoving the pictures on tumblr, just a guy helping the poor living in the dark under the city and telling their stories. More of this.

I use to live in the tunnels flamingo and swenson for years. i seen it all the drugs the sick, the death. it's a terrible thing no one helps and the only time the government comes is when someone dies. they need help. I've been out for 11 months months now and it's a miracle.

We haven't heard from her in almost 2 years, no contact, no calls, no texts, no visits, no trace. I've talked to the Sheriff over the phone and local hospitals, my Dad did check the mortuary (once last year) cause if she doesn't have a wallet on her with I.D. or drivers license might be filed as a "Jane Doe" :( :( :(

This is one reason i want to Grow up and be rich, not the kind that's greedy and rude, but the the kind that is caring enough to help others and get them to smile as a gift. It hurts me to see how these people live like this, even though they may be fine, they still need aid, fresh food, fresh water, etc. it's things i wish i could provide but just can't at the moment. It's a life goal for me. Honestly most people would do it to get something in return, but i want to do it to receive a smile and a hug, cause that's all i would care about, the happiness of those homeless

True that. I have three degrees and am almost a lawyer. If it weren't for a close friend for many decades who I have always helped when he needed me back in the day, I'd be living under a bridge because although I apply for work, for some reason, they usually turn me down and then I end up down and out. So yes, this kind of thing can happen to anybody. I now know from personal experience. These people really could use a hand up. :)

The compassion of humanity still amazes me. As social creatures its in our nature to help but sadly most dont.
@rebekah1362
@rebekah1362 2 года назад
Most don't because it's *not* in human nature to help. People are naturally selfish and self-centered. It's why as toddlers we have to be *taught* to share. Children naturally say *mine* when they have something and don't want anyone else to take it. Or try to take something someone else has. They hit and hide their hands. They lie and have to be taught to tell the truth. They have to be taught to do good, to put others first, to show affection and to say I'm sorry etc., It does not come naturally. We are born into a fallen state and only learning by example and repeated correction raises us to a level where we can *imitate* goodness but our true nature goes unchanged, it's just hidden. When there is no law, no structure and no accountability or reverence for something greater than ourselves, mankind de-evolves back to that fallen state and take on the same nature they had when they came into this world. This is why we need a Savior, to change our true nature into the right nature. Without Him we can only put on a veneer of civility, but beneath is always our true nature and given the "right" circumstances that veneer comes off and the world sees us for who we truly are. This is why you see the vitriol, bitterness, anger, angst, lust, bigotry, fear, sarcasm and rank hostility in comment sections across every social media platform. When people believe themselves to be faceless and don't fear the repercussions, they feel free to take off the mask of civility and reveal who they really are, who they've always been. A sinner in need of a savior.

My friends and I used to hang out in and explore these tunnels as teenagers, on the Summerlin side. Never ran into any encampments and rarely any people (they were visiting, not living down there anyway), but read Matt O'Brien's book when it came out and have always been fascinated by these people and their stories. Looking forward to going back one day to help out, do some homeless outreach, etc.

Nedroj So that may be the perceived case, but the average wealth of an individual American is some of the highest in the world, in a huge country of almost 400 million nonetheless. Also America's debt relative to it's GDP is manageable, whereas in some European countries the amount debt acquired will require several huge economy to solve. America's growth is also in the long run quite healthy, yet again, in many European countries growth is expected to, in the long run, falter. This is not to say there's not anything wrong with the United States, just some people are too acquainted with The United State's weaknesses more than their own region's.

Discovery✌dude ... Whoever, whatever , wherever God is may he bless you sr ...I was once homeless in Baltimore city md. I know how these ppl feel and what they are going thru but even I found out it's never too late to start a fresh life! I went from gangs , to time in jail most of my whole life into my late 20s ,to drugs to losing my fam, my kids ,my happiness, my soul but I over came my demons with fighting hard to change my life I literally had to leave my home town in 09 after my fiancee died from OD ! I was 27 she was 20 now I'm 36 and living well . No more demons but still deal with regret , I'm just happy to be out of the streets and alive and engaged in love again! I have my own home and I'm actually proud of myself for a change but like I said I will always have regrets, and as far as my demons , I hope they stay gone!..I won't survive Baltimore if I ever go back and this makes me very scard, and sad 😢 it's where my fam is and I dunno if I will ever see them again before we pass on or not

My cousin is one of those people that chooses to live in the tunnels under the strip and elsewhere. He knows I would take him in in a minute but he would rather live where he does. He does suffer from a bit of mental illness and yes, he goes through his cycles but he's a very good man and he is also very nice, probably to a fault. I think he often gets taken advantage of. Not by anyone in the tunnels per se, but from the dealers and others who live above ground. I haven't heard from him in weeks now though and I am bit worried. It's not like him to not at least call me or my brother weekly so I have to wonder if he is okay. It doesn't help that he is there in Vegas and I am here in Montana. It's not like I can just drive down there and find him either. Well, I'll just keep hoping he gets a hold of me or my bro soon otherwise I am tempted to put in a missing persons report. I have my reasons to be worried about him. Thanks for the great video, Seeker. It's amazing so many people have no idea how large the homeless community in Vegas is.
@cortrichards8179
@cortrichards8179 9 лет назад
Taha Berke Can Yes, thank you. We did hear from him finally and he is okay. He just lost his grandmother ( my aunt ) and she is the one who raised him. She was 94 though! His mother, my 1st cousin, was a heroin addict her whole life and although she loved her kids, she was not able to take of them properly. A few years ago I got a call from the LVPD informing me that she had been found in an alley behind a Von's in Las Vegas and had OD'd. So, my cousin lost his mother that way and his childhood was not the best although when my aunt had him he was taken very good care of. I think it was what happened to him in his childhood that made him unstable and brought out the psychosis and eventually, severe Schizophrenia. I'm just glad to know where he is. I can't make him come here and live with me or anything else unfortunately as he is of age and old enough to make his own decisions no matter how screwed up they may be.

I lived in Vegas for 15 years and had only heard of the tunnels. Never knew there were people living in them. Scary to think what would happen in a flash flood.

I visited as Vegas and realise the hotel workers work for tourist money to live. I wouldn't live in Las Vegas you can tell what people live there or holiday there. Las Vegas has so many lights it blinded the homeless community. Give food, guidance and help,

Carnation condensed milk was produced since 1899 but took the name Carnation Milk in 1901. The company was eventually sold to Nestle in 1986 who still makes the milk today, but now it is called "Nestle's Carnation Cooking Milk"

Sadly, out of sight out of mind... This is incredible. a different world. Read a book by dean koontz called innocence about a boy whose mother suicides and the boy is rescued by a man who lives under the city. He meets a girl who "lives" in a library. An amazing book and perspective of the world. Thank you for this video

Talking about Paradise Lost, there is a place of...certain significance also in Nevada. Both are underground...further underground...where did all the people go? Only the federal government knows...
@rockerseven
@rockerseven 3 года назад
And the sad thing is the government would rather spend more to keep them out than it would cost to actually build homeless shelters. And then you have people who complain that they aren't looking for work, but I'm sure those are the very same people who would refuse to hire them because of a past record or drug problem, which is why I'm sure they give up looking for work.

Anyone know EXACTLY WHERE the entrance to the tunnels is? Is somewhere south of the Rio Casino??
@jimbattaglia1548

William Connell just south of flamingo on valley view Blvd before the condos and extended stay you’ll see the tunnels where they just walk into some have made shelters on the street there as well it’s pretty crazy but they do it

Nebojsa Galic I have to ask why? While I have never been to Calcutta I have had first hand experience with informal or undocumented slum housing in Latin America. In most third world countries and those countries of north western Europe that possessed the foresight to maintain some semblance of the socialist safety net

If I was homeless this is where I would rather stay, until it rained. What happens to all their stuff when the water comes through? How many of them have died during a flood? Seems a little dangerous even though they like living down there.

I feel so bad for these folks, and I realize that the way the economy is alot of us are where we are one paycheck away from their situation or living check to check. People do not plan on living that way and want better, but when thats not possible, you do what you have too. These are strong people that want to survive, I think some like the gentleman who has the jail record really also is there to be left alone, he knows he could be living better if he was back in jail, but his freedom is more important and that says alot about him. These people just need a break, but they are tuff and have learned the inns and outs of getting by, they have learning you can not get from books, they have street smarts and thats what you need to survive. Plus they are not dirty people, they just do not dream anymore because of their ages they do the best they can and di not waste energy on maybes or what ifs, its called SURVIVAL...I wish them the best and hope their situations become what they want them to be, I can not say I hope they get out of there, because some people choose to be there, they feel more comfortable there, its their home and its where they make the rules, and live how they please , but at natures mercy...
